I've defended Cyberpunk all over the place. And this isn't really anthing against Cyberpunk but against the state of so called RPG' today. So a little thought experiment. What would Cyberpunk be like if it was a real RPG in the mode of Fallout 2 or say KOTOR. First a bit of background on those.

KOTOR allowed you to be good or evil and had real consequences to that end. You could force one NPC to kill another that no longer supported you. Other NPC's might leave or you can have such an influence that you changed them.

FO2 was even more open. Have to kill someone so why not hide a bomb as a present and tell the grand kid to to take it to grandpa. Got tired of your wife? Get a complete divorce forever style. Sell her to a porn studio. Hate an NPC then kill him off by causing a heart attack or having a brain extracted. Don't like a faction then avoid them or destroy them.

But Cyberpunk doesn't give you freedom like all the rest of the so called RPG's of today. Killing kids is OUT. You can't decide who you want to side with either. So here's how Cyberpunk would be if you did have choices.

First off you wouldn't have to do NCPD stuff. Instead you could side with the criminals [...] and rob etc. Next is the gangs. Instead of being forced to support the Aldacado's you can side with the Shivs to take them out. Or better still the corpo's to play one side against the other.

As a former Arasaka corpo you can join a different corp and help them deal with Arasaka. Rise up their ranks while destroying Arasaka. Recruit a gang to harass other people, gangs and corps.

Want to be independent then do so. No gang likes you but will hire you for special jobs. Then you can sell your servies to the highest bidder and double/triple cross people.

Romance who you want and then dump them the next day or stay with them. If you dislike someone on the street because of their looks, race, creed, sex or any reason then rob them or just kill em. Want to be a cyberpsycho then do so. But beware of Militech coming after you.

You can also be Mr. kind and be like the Buddhist monks and spread peace. Or avenge the downtrodden and be their hero.

All the while Johnny can approve or not. This would impact doing stuff with Rogue or how you do the endings. And your choices dictate who might help you with your "situation".

[...]

But one can always hope and dream that someday we will be given free reign and a real RPG game will surface once again. However, Cyberpunk is not going to be it.

Not gonna touch a lot of what was said in OP but it's clear that The Pickup mission was demonstrative of what this game was originally meant to be. And in that case it would have been an RPG like FO2, TES 3, KOTOR 1 & 2, ect.

Frankly games have abused the term RPG to mean an overly broad definition. This game is clearly a mostly linear action-adventure looter-shooter.

I wish all of the main story missions and side missions had the same treatment as The Pickup, it's clear that was done especially for the E3 2019 demo. It's what sold me on this game and I feel some disappointment in the end result. It's still a decent game, looks beautiful, but has holes.

I sincerely hope they remember that mission when they do the DLC and plug the holes (RIP NC Popo).
