What do you call someone from Kovir and Poviss?

What do you call someone from Kovir and Poviss?

I know this sounds like a totally random question, but how would you call someone from Kovir and Poviss?

Someone from Temeria is Temerian. Someone from Redania is Redanian. Coen is from Poviss ... is that a Povite? Povissian?
And if we're just talking about "Kovir and Poviss" the nation, would one take precedence over the other? Lan Exter is in Kovir (right?) so, Kovirian? Kovir-Povissian?

Essentially, if one had to tag a Civ in the Civilization games for this Kingdom, how would you tag it?

In The Tower of the Swallow it is rendered Kovirian. "Kovirian boats"

No opinion about a citizen of Poviss, nor the precedence of Kovir and Poviss... The style of King Esterad Thyssen is given as King of Kovir, Poviss, Narok, Velhad and Talgar... I'd be tempted to refer to all as Korivians... but you could presumably render each County as it's own population name... <name>ian seems to be a possible solution to all.

Interesting topic. I like open discussions.

If you look up demonyms you'll see there is no strict rule for suffixes except that -ian seems to be a common pattern, like a default whenever it fits.

Our main source of collected Witcher lore is the gamepedia where you can find demonyms for liquor. All of them use -ian. So I would suggest

Kovirian

Poviss might be tricky because Povissian doesn't roll out easily. If you look at real life cases of place names ending in S you get Dallasite, Bruxelloi, Parisian, Leodensian, etc. Very varied. Poviss is supposed to be northwest, and since we know the continent somewhat resembles medieval Europe we can assume it would relate to the Netherlands or Germany. Or Norway if you think it goes that far. You could use that as your choice of demonym.

Just for variety I would probably go with

Povissite

And about the multi region nation I suppose a mandatory reference is the Austro-Hungarian empire. Austral in this case being a Latin word for Southern, which lends itself to the variation. But what do we know about the origin of the name Kovir? Personally, nothing. If we had infinite freedom to bend words I would go with

Koviro-Povissite

Just for fun.

Disclaimer: I know nothing about these things.

Kovirian, Koviran or my favorite, Koviri. As for Poviss, I´d say Povissan, just like in Russian. There is actually a county in Wales called Poviss. From reading the books I got the impression of that Kovir is the dominant title in the Kingdom, though it isn´t really a country. In the modern world we have countries named after two places, like Trinidad & Tobaco, though in a medieval setting the idea of the "state" or "nation" wasn´t fully developed. The idea of the modern state only bagan in around 1450 and was fully developed in around 1600 .
People actually starting to really care which "nation" you are from came much, much later, in the 19th century, though they did identify with their cultural kinsmen, the borders of kingdoms and duchies changed so frequently that the commonors could barely keep track and their loyalty was to the king or duke, not their nation. Germany dor example, was divided into between 1000-600 different political entities during the high medieval period!

Sorry for the gymnasium history lesson, but the world of The Witcher is, politically speaking, a very accurate interpretation of the real medieval world.
Hope this helps :)

Also keep in mind there inconsistencies. There's for instance Kaedwenian Stout and in TW2 there's the Kaedweni camp.

So don't worry too much.

You guys are awesome, thanks! I think for the sake of the Civ mod I'm working on, I'll go with Kovirian as much as I do like Koviri. I think Volsung brings up a good point with Kaedweni as well! I'd forgotten about that and just slapped the "n" on the end as with most other places. Kaedweni makes it stand out more among the others.

Also (and I didn't think of it until now), but Rivia & Lyria. I was just going to abbreviate to Lyrian as I'm under the impression that that's the dominant kingdom, but there's probably also got to be a bit of fan service here. Rivio-Lyrian? :D

I don't know if Kaedweni/Kaedwenian is necessarily an inconsistency. Kind of like one can find "Scots" or "Scottish" both used as adjectives. Although it probably was just the result of the devs forgetting about "Kaedwenian" or changing their minds.

It would be "Rivo-Lyrian", which also sounds nice in my opinion, but "Rivian-Lyrian" would be correct as well.
