Just wonder...

Which of them is Ultra and which of them is Low, can you tell?

One image has 40 frame rate, one has 50 frame rate.

You can appreciate the difference between medium/high/ultra if you look at distant buildings (Novigrad, Oxenfurt, etc.), but so far I noticed the difference only in those isntances, so in my book it's not worth the huge fps hit.

I want a no shadow option because it would help me with fps a lot.

being able to play at all > shadows

How about next time you actually take some screen shots in a area with shadows instead of scene mostly filled with ambient occlusion. Here is low and Ultra.

CLICK THIS ICON. For some reason I cant post the gif.

Here is a bigger picture with an interactive comparison "move the slider"
http://international.download.nvidia.com/geforce-com/international/comparisons/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-shadow-quality-interactive-comparison-1-ultra-vs-low.html

Now as for the difference between high and medium, almost identical. So I use medium. Low just removes too many shadows and they are too light. Medium is as good as high and is better for performance.

For all other comparisons go here and scroll down http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/guides/the-witcher-3-wild-hunt-graphics-performance-and-tweaking-guide

Do the same comparing medium and high both to ultra, high->ultra is still a good fps hit but quality wise the difference is very, very thin.

I think a lot of the high-end settings in this game are supposed to be used in conjunction with each other. So if you have everything maxed out it will look a lot better than everything on high, or partially high and partially ultra.

This will probably come together further down the line when there have been significant patches for performance and quality, and a lot of people are running next-gen GPUs. So you figure, a year or two from now the game will look and run a lot better both from updates and new hardware. That's when the top end settings will come in to play.
