As a veteran player, I wholeheartedly recommend experiencing System Shock 2 whenever you get the chance – it's truly a masterpiece.
You've got a couple of great options for playing it:
- The Original Version with Mods: This is perfectly fine and still offers an excellent experience.
- The 25th Anniversary Edition: This version comes with everything included and even has a mod list if you want to customize it further. Just a heads-up, it might need a few minor patches to get it running perfectly.
I love SS2. just wasn't sure if it's worth getting the Anniversary edition or just carry on with my modded original
If you prioritize ease of use, stable multiplayer, and official modern features like controller support, the 25th Anniversary Edition is likely the better choice. If you enjoy tinkering with mods, have the original, and primarily play single-player, the modded original can still offer a very comparable visual experience, but perhaps with less modern QoL and potential multiplayer headaches.
Cheers. Don't enjoy tinkering with mods but will use them and have no interest in MP. Will add to the wish list and pick up when it's on sale just to save a bit of faffing when I get the SS2 itch and decide to replay.
Struggling through Wuchang (it's hard) but enjoying it greatly nonetheless. Also playing the more relaxing 2077.

I'm still very early into the game and I've only defeated one boss (raider flesh-eater- something was called) as I don't have that much time to play. I'm using the starting longsword but upgraded and two swords as a secondary fighting style (bought from a trader at the temple).
Despite having progressed little, I love the game aesthetic, setting and protagonist. Women warriors are the best, and even better if they're Asian in an ancient Asia setting.
I assume all those negative reviews are coming from the performance issues that have been reported (which I haven't experienced so far) and the game's difficulty (it was advertised as a Souls-like and that's exactly the experience it delivers, don't know what were those users expecting).
Just finished my Terraria run in Master mode, even defeated the Empress of Light at day time for the first time ever. It was a blast like always and even better on the last version
