After keeping an eye on Xenonauts 2 for several years, I finally decided to buy it on sale. I really enjoyed the first Xenonauts, which was a fun implementation of the old Xcom games, and X2 looks like it's nearing completion in some form or another.

Mechanically, I like it. Lots of QOL improvements over the first game. But the pacing is bad. There are some doomsday timers which artificially create an unnecessary sense of rush. The first is easy to deal with, but it's annoying. The rest are a bigger problem. It's like the devs didn't get the message that the Long War mods are what made the new generation of XCom games super popular, as well as their first Xenonauts game. Mods will probably fix that when the game is finally finished.

Love the first Xenonauts. Great to return to the roots. Never played the second, but I'd have to agree out the gate that I'm not a fan of being "pushed" through the campaigns. I liked the feeling of the original Xcom: lots of ways to win and lots of ways to lose. Having entire bases destroyed was not a "game over". Neither was losing 50+ soldiers over the course of a campaign. OG Xcom and Xenonauts feel more like a "war" -- less like a small squad of superheroes with one shot and one shot only.

OG Xcom was awesome. "Okay, I think I've got the hang of this. My soldiers are storming through an alien base and the aliens are falling in the face of the onslaught. Oh crap, what was that thing that just went sailing around three corners and wiped nearly my entire squad?" Welcome to the blaster bomb. And it was creepy. There was something about the combination of environment, lighting, and sound that none of the subsequent games have quite managed to capture.

And the way they continuously introduced new alien types -- all the way up to the end game. The whole game felt like:

Cyber Knights: Flashpoint.

I'm only a few hours in and still learning some of the systems (which seem pretty deep), but the game has been excellent so far. It's a nice mixture of stealth, hacking, and combat, in a turn based Cyberpunk setting.

Starcom Unknown Space. It reminds me of Star Control 2. It's a 2D space exploration/combat game where you and your ship are transported into an alternate universe and explore the systems there. Fight many aliens, upgrade your ship in the process. Great fun.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, working on the first game.

It's really, really hard at times (especially levels where I need to break every box without dying even once), but super fun. I remember the original Crash Bandicoot on PlayStation, and this one's just as great.

My favourite level (and the only one where I've managed to get a platinum relic in the time trial):

Bloody spell. A very fun game.

It's on a whopping -88% sale right now on Steam for only €$2.39. It's very well polished, disciplined, and despite being a AA game, delivers a AAA quality. If you're goony and like Wuchang: Fallen Feathers, definitely would recommend to get the all DLC bundle.

But hurry up though, sale won't last long.

Just finished Kingdom Come Deliverance 2. Oh boy what a story it was! Haven't felt like this since The Witcher 3, I think. I really, really, wasn't a fan of combat in this game and it may have caused some very bad/loud words to pop up here and there, but this was still the best game in many years that I have played.

I definitely need to start that first game next. Maybe tomorrow. I hope it will be as good as this one was. Also expecting it to be equally annoying time to time :D

One of my favorite games. I agree about the combat, but a bit of modding smooths that out really well.

If the combat in KCD2 annoyed you, then the combat in KCD1 will annoy you even more, but the story and world are more than worth the effort. Just don't get too irritated if, in the first 30 minutes or so of the game, you find yourself feeling like you're doing the combat perfectly, and still getting your butt handed to you. That's supposed to happen for story reasons. Which I always think is stupid, but still, it's mostly out of your control.

Currently playing Nioh 3.

It feels a lot different to Nioh 2. Most notably, balance is less sweaty (My experience in Nioh 2 was even when dumping all points into health and wearing the strongest armour I could, I still got one-shot by EVERYTHING)

Seems to have taken inspiration from ER as it's more open world than before too. Though it ends up feeling more Ubisoft-esk in its design where it's just "Run here, do generic thing, move on to the next thing". The only major difference is they made it arbitrarily annoying. You don't get to see icons on the map until you increase your "Exploration Level" by... Completing objectives... So you have to run around blindly hoping you run into enough objectives to then be able to actually see them.

Minimap is also nigh useless as it doesn't show you the area. It only shows north and nearby objectives you've found. So navigation involves a lot of opening up the full map and figuring out where paths are.

Loot is... Not amazing. Very much in the vein of "Looter" games, so you get a bunch of random stuff with random stats (And random levels) and thus have to wade through hundreds of items to look for upgrades every few minutes.

Combat is... Ehh... They've gone and made 2 different combat styles. One is similar to prior titles where you have your 3 stances for different attack styles and you dance between them to maintain your "Stamina" and the other is more like a standard Soulslike... If you were on crack and needed to backstab to deal damage (Also, it has some abilities to do damage at range, though they're pathetically weak in 99% of cases and only really useful to exploit elemental weakness)

This could have been interesting if they were combined... But they're not. They use different equipment and don't interact with each other. So you just pick which one you like and ignore the other (Outside when you accidentally swap modes because the "Parry the big attack" button is also the "Swap combat mode" button)

So in essence, it feel like it's a lot more casual friendly compared to the other Nioh games (And soulslikes in general). Both with the balance being more down to earth and also the new combat mode that goes away from the precision based style the series is known for and is more "Just mash attack and your free dodge"

As far as other non-gameplay related things go:

- Character creator is decent. Offering a range of presets and then many sliders to customize.

- English VA is bad. Most characters sound incredibly wooden and lack any emotion.

- English lip syncing is also horrendous. Not quite as bad as classic kung fu films but it honestly seems like they didn't even try.

I'll have to swap to Japanese VO to see if that is done better.

- Map design, as far as I've experienced (I'm not sure if later zones offer more variety) but everything is dark and dingy. It doesn't look good and it's often hard to actually discern things (Like enemies or objects).

- Story is meh. "You're going to be shogun" something something "Betrayal" something something "You're now back in time for... Reasons"

Overall... I'd call the game mid at best. It's not horrible as combat can be entertaining enough with either mode. But it does have a lot of questionable features (Also, some FPS issues). If you're not a big Soulslike fan but enjoyed ER's more casual approach it'd probably be fine for you too (Though bosses and tough enemies can be a little tricky)

Well done!
A fantastic game and a fanstatsic adventure. My personal 2025 GOTY and by far

I noticed this in second game too. Time to time you get "stupified" on purpose.

Biggest battles coming? No worries!
Game takes away all your food and then starves you on purpose.
Dresses you to some "random" gear and prevents you from switching, because you are in combat that you couldn't avoid.
You can't access your horse's saddlebags, where is some of the gear you would need right now.
You suck at combat even against three enemies? Here is 20 for you!

I disliked it so much. But I also get the point why it was made like this. And yes, the story and the world are definitely worth it. Few people recommended modding, but I liked to keep at least my first run vanilla. Luckily the game also gives you few good options for avoiding some of the combat
(stealth kills and charisma).

A fantastic game and a fanstatsic adventure.
Indeed. I really enjoyed every moment that spent in the world. I could almost smell the forests when wandering around and trying to find my next target. This was a really good game to test my new pc, too. Graphics were amazing! Characters were also very well done. I honestly felt bad for Capon when he found out that he will
get married (and I was even the one suggesting that, but apparently it happens anyways?).
