What happened to TW2's outstanding armor design?

I was just looking at the screenshots released so far, and I must say i noticed a disappointing trend overall.

Just to be clear, I know they claimed the engine is not final and they are going to rework the renderer... But frankly my problem isn't with the renderer or other technical features.

I'm mostly wondering what happened to the outstanding armor design we saw in The Witcher 2, because both Geralt and the few NPCs we are looking in some of these screens strike me as blatantly inferior to the previous chapter, in that sense.
Armors in TW2 used to be extremely grounded in reality (one would be tempted to say "historically accurate" if that wouldn't be a bit absurd in a fantasy world) and incredibly cool.
Now, in those early screenshots, I'm noticing a mail armor that seems a bit like a Ninja suit, horned helms everywhere (burn them with fire!) and more generally a lot of cheesy design when it comes to costumes and armors.
Why?

Sorry but hoods were not realistic to me at all. There's no way you can justify hoods on a character designed to have the most situational awareness against enemies.

That said, just wait for more news about the armor design in the Witcher 3.

Can't really say I share that opinion, but that's a bit beyond the point, anyway.
I wasn't referring to "hoods", but to armors, costumes, details over them and overall design.

I really don't think the design is "cheesy", but relax, it will look better later :]

I'm very relaxed, thanks.
And MAYBE, but I'm not commenting about wishes and dreams of what we could eventually see later.
I'm giving a feedback based on what they shown us so far.

I like Geralts new heavier mail armour, but I agree for a viking vibe they should have gone with the Sutton Hoo prototype, with byrnies and long mail coats over woolen tunics and leggings. I assume we'll see the same plate harness in Novigrad as we saw in Assassins of Kings. For the No Mans Land i'm unsure, might see old man Draug again, say hello have a chat and a nice cup of tea along with sticky buns?

I think that different parts of the World will have different types of people, like vikings and etc...
That would be nice, adding more variety.

Man. What's with the negativity these days.

I for one, absolutely love the design. In fact, I love Geralts new armour

... more than the Raven armour from TW2. Oh yeah. I fuckin' went there. And let me get one thing straight: I fucking love Raven armour. Observe my love!

I love it so much, I used it for most of my playthrough of Skyrim. And on my first playthrough of TW2, I wore Ravens armour until the end of Chapter 2. So I agree, TW2 had amazing art direction. That's why I don't doubt that TW3 will also have awesome art direction. I mean that department won awards for their concept arts and character designs, have a little fucking faith. And so far, I'm loving the progress. They're not just copy pasting their old works but evolving and trying new things. Complaining about a developer doing new stuff? That's a first. CoD gets a free pass while RED gets the shaft? Me not understand logic that u possess. So far I've seen unique, visually distinctive clothes for various different characters. Although, as we all know, they've revealed practically nothing. A few pics featuring bandits, farmers, vikings and of course, Geralt. Complaining about the armour when we've only seen a few pics of TW3 in early alpha, is unfair.

It's looking great so far. I'm super excited about the game, regarding all aspects. And Geralts armour, DAAAYUUM it's awesome. Can't wait until a Skyrim mod pops up!

I don't mind the Skellige armor as it seems to be consistent with a tribal society on the fringe of the known world. They may not have access to such precious or expensive materials the Temerian soldiery does, or perhaps harbor a more rustic sense of embellishment. The horned helmets, however, are a trope that needed to die about 100 yrs ago. Good that this is an early build. I assume much is bound to change and hope we get the amazing detail that TW2 outfits had.

I love it too, but some people are concerned because they really love the game, and they want it to be like "as good as or beter than TW2". BUT, people need to relax, 1 year to go.

Oh, something I really wanted to see.
Many of the places we saw until now are snowy, we'll have "winter" armors? That would be SWEET :B

I’m sure that among the vast number of outfits that we’ll undoubtedly encounter there’ll be at least one that suits your tastes, OP. Although you do have a point with the horned helmets ... I, too, was appalled by this implausible cliché as soon as I first laid eyes on them :/

I'm sure of it as well, and just to be clear, I don't find the new default armor for Geralt particularly bad (hell, in many other games it would stand out as particularly cool, in fact).
But this is The Witcher we are talking about, and in the previous game I didn't find "at least one armor that suited my taste", I was in love with pretty much every single one of them.
And yes, I'm counting both Geralt's armors and those used by countless NPCs.

I'm not "crazy" about the new armor, it does look cool. The artist did an excellent job designing a sweet looking set. It looks like something a witcher would wear before fighting a deadly manticore. I prefer the wider sword belt of the TW2 though.

What I admired most about TW2's armor was it looked both functional and had an "every-day" quality to it. Heck, the prototype/trailer armor of the first game really only showed in the Light Leather set, a dinky stat piece that was somewhat hard to find. But, I imagine there will be a wide section of armors for master Geralt.

I'll end with this:

Geralt of Rivia. Baddass Biker. The power of armor variety

Going to hold off on commenting about the armour for now, but I will agree with the anti-horned helmet crowd. They need to be dispensed with.

i'm giving them the benefit of a doubt and waiting for the temerian and kaedwenis to appear. the best armor designs have always belonged to the soldier npcs

What bothers me is that Geralt doesn't have a bag to put potions and items

These are the only armors I ever used in TW2. I only use two armors per playthrough because I hate that Geralt is the only one who's changing clothes while other characters don't maybe some of the main characters could change clothes every two days or something.

Geralts new design doesn't have that 'I've worn this for a long time putting all these nick nacks' kind of thing going on. He doesn't look like a travelling vagabond but an soldier assassin with heavy armor.

Geralt is described as wearing a Kaftan: a long tunic with sleeves, worn with a belt. Why can't he wear normal leather witcher armor and put on his damn coat if he gets cold in Skellige?

The guy on the far left is wearing a Kaftan.

I still think is a design thing. There is no colour and contrast and the chainmail part makes no sense to me, if they take that extra lair of chainmail of his shoulders it would look better but TW 2 armours are still on other lvl of greatness. I think the armour is just a place holder and not really what we are going to get in game.
