What is the fun in playing Nilfgaard?

While NG is not my favorite faction to play (although I do enjoy it), there is no doubt that it is my favorite to play against. There are numerous reasons why.
  • I find it far more influenced by long term strategy (playing with an eye to later rounds) as opposed to short term tactics (countering cards to minimize their value).
  • I find there is more variety in deck design, leader use, and card order that matters than in other factions.
  • NG helps keep the really obnoxious decks in check.
  • It is easier to compete against NG with limited card holdings than it is other factions.
  • NG has the best tools to quickly play cards for certain quests.
  • NG seems to have more tools for interesting and effective memes than other factions.
  • NG leaders work well with neutral cards. I think every all neutral deck I have ever created is either NG or SK, and that’s because of the leaders.
 
ppl who only really like winning even if that means playing the same 3 decks over and over again in seasonal modes
YUP. And it makes those of use tired of playing those same 3 decks enjoy this game so much more.....

can someone explain to me why and how in Double Down mode any NG card with a disloyal option is allowed to pull cards from your deck? It's just another example of how stupid this game play is and that faction has become. How do you figure that Joachim De Wett can be played and then pull a high card from my deck and play it has their own? This makes no sense. The rule of that event is - Whenever you play a unit from your hand, play a unit with the same Provision Cost from YOUR deck. These rules are broken the game play is sh_t. An emissary can boost one of their players 7 points but also steal a 4-provision card from my deck. No. If playing any disloyal card should pull from the other persons deck then that card should be given to that player, as you're putting that card on the same side of the board. This game is so stupid.

Every faction has in busted meta. There's no clear way to answer your question. NG just has many tools to counter is all.

I don't play assimilate.

Let's say you're Monster. Bleeding, bleeding, bleeding... Some Wild Hunt hounds boosts itself. Orianna, Unseen Elder, the bronze units that gets boost when something happens including the word "bleed". Frost, fog. Come on.
Let's say you're Scoia'tael. Moving side to side, getting boost, hitting enemy, deploy: boost self x2 cause why not... And dwarfs. Not immune theoretical but in practice, it's vay immune than immune unity.
Let's say you're Syndicate. Crime, crime, crime. Fee, fee, fee. Hit, boost.
Let's say you're Northern Realms. Hit every f*ing turn cause why not. Hit again, again and again.
Skellige. Rain, sworm, some rain too. Place unit to enemy side and destroy it. Hit your units in order to make them stronger.

And there are some units that can duel or just hit every unit that enemy plays by the amount of it's power. Come on.

I hate assimilate and most of the other decks. I boost myself, sometimes hit enemy.
 
I have one nilfgaard deck I enjoy playing. It copies and mirrors the opponents deck and thus is different everytime. It's not very strong, but it's fun and allows for a lot of creativity each match. And I believe it's fun for my opponent too, since it's not the usual predictable op deck we all encounter too often.
 
I don't understand why do you play the Nilfguard faction. I saw some other threads of someone who said they immediately quit the game and don't GG when playing against Nilfguard. For me it's also the most cheesy faction. But i'm still curious what is the fun in it?
And here we are, almost 3 years and a half later, talking about the same things. On average, 7 games out of 10 are against VERY pleasant Nilfgaard decks, and you lose the desire to play, you quit, you don't GG anyone. It's very sad.

Yes, it seems like people have a tendency to be pervert and prefer a possessive style of playing in which they easily win by destroying the opponents cards, steal their cards, play their cards against them etc. rather than just having fun and try different things.
Yes, it seems like the only important thing for people here is to win and reach pro rank, rather than having the pleasure of playing with all the cards from the witcher universe.
But the root cause of this trend is clearly something else, it's a game not properly balanced in which it seems like developers focused on adding new broken cards and mechanics rather than balancing carefully what they already had under their nose. And, even more disappointing, they had received all the possible feedbacks and had all the time in the world to take actions, but unfortunately decided to turn a blind eye.

As a result, people are tired of facing Nilfgaard decks, people are leaving the game, people forfeit as soon as they see the opponent's faction or leader's ability, people are discouraged from trying original and creative decks because they will be crashed quickly. Is this ok? Is this the definition of fun? What is the point of playing this game nowadays?
Playing Gwent nowadays feels like going to a restaurant in which you cannot choose the meal that you want, but you rather have to eat the food that the majority of the customers are having, or feels like playing a RPG game that is well advertised but in the end doesn't give you freedom of choice.
Why I cannot play my original decks and have the same probabilities of winning as the other people?
Why, 9 times out of 10 I am crashed by the opponent not because they were better than me but simply because they were playing a not balanced meta deck? What is the fun in playing against the same meta decks over and over, 500 times in a row?
Why I have to spend hours thinking about new ideas, new strategies, when I know that the opponents will play always the same crap? (crap is a polite word replacing something else)
Why I have to patiently wait for the Seasonal Mode Bearly Balanced to get again that feeling of having equal chance of winning the game and have fun at the same time?
Why every patch that came out addressed everything apart from the balance issues and this big Nilfgaardian elephant in the room?
This game doesn't incentivate creativity, but rather punishes it. And this is what you get when you try to be creative.

This my April 2023 statistics, and it's similar to the statistics of my previous months. I don't use meta decks, I destroyed the one I had (including the Nilfgaard ones) and milled their cards. Why should I play and easily win 100 games using always the same overpowered meta decks, the same mechanics, the same cards in the same order all over again. It's too easy. It's not fun.
And I got tired of playing this game, and tired of the opponents I have to face every time.
I didn't get tired because I am not winning every single time, but rather because the majority of the defeats comes by forfeitting half way through a game or even at the beginning of the game (when it's already clear they will crash you). The majority of the games are not continued till the end because I lose the desire to play.
And, the few times I win, rather than feeling proud (because I am using decks no one else is using) I still feel uncomfortable because I played against yet another opponent playing the same repeatitive, sad and disappointing decks, with always the same cards used in the same order.

Thinking out loud, I am asking myself the same question over and over.
What is the legacy of this game?
This is potentially the best card game in the world, but I am afraid the ugly truth is that there will be less and less players and the majority will always be playing Nilfgaard.
To this regard, please find below some sad data representing the current (and probably future) trend. I collected this data over the last few weeks, observing all the fresh players using Nilfgaard, to illustrate the issue, to show how much new players are using Nilfgaard meta decks as a mean to easily win and progress to the high ranks.
Every line is a different opponent I faced.
I will also add some data regarding few very experienced players I faced, because seeing this data in new players is sad but seeing this data in experienced players made me feel particularly sad and angry.
FYI, I decided to omit the names of all the players I observed, although I collected all of them and in some cases I really wanted to disclose them.

Because my experience is quite different than this, I recorded the lifetime ranked wins of each of my last 50 opponents in every faction (regardless of faction played). Note that I played exclusively unranked games. We may not be computing the same statistics.

The entirety of my data is virtually impossible to present in usable form on this forum, but some highlights are given below.

  1. Most players had a reasonable percentage of their total wins coming from NG. In particular of 50 people encountered.
0-5% NG wins 9 people
5-10% NG wins 5 people
10-15% NG wins 5 people
15-20% NG wins 11 people
20-25% NG wins 4 people
25-30% NG wins 5 people
30-35% NG wins 0 people
35-40% NG wins 6 people
40-45% NG wins 2 people
The remaining three had 93%, 98%, and 100% of all wins with NG.

15 of 50 players gained over 50% of all wins with a single faction: 8 using MO, 3 using NG, 2 NR, 2 ST, 1 SK, and no one with SY.

The average % of wins earned with monsters was 24.1, the average with NG was 22.5, followed by NR (18.8), SK (15.5), ST (14.0), and SY (5.1).

16 players had more of their wins with monsters than any other faction, followed by 14 with NG, 7 with NR, 7 with ST, 6 with SK, and none with SY.

In these 50 matches, I encountered NG 15 times, MO 9 times, SK 8 times, NR 7 times, ST 7 times, and SY thrice. One match crashed before I saw the opposing faction.

Yes, I am afraid it's really dead, and it's really a pity. It has become the festival of toxic cards.

One small thing that would make me happy at this point would be the possibility to forfeit a ranked game without losing it. So that you can choose who to face without being penalised. And you can figuratively tell Nilfgaard players "look at the mirror and play against yourself".
(I am coming out with this idea because I think they will never nerf Nilfgaard cards - if they really wanted, they would have already done it time ago, it's not difficult)

This would be absolutely horrible. It essentially gives players license to use the already too frequent binary decks without fear of consequences. If an opponent Heatwaves your Drakenborg, just forfeit. If you fail to draw enough Practitioner support to make 8 copies of Tibor, just forfeit. If your opponent plays a high enough tempo deck to be able to bleed your Vanadain/Simlas/Waylay garbage deck, just forfeit. If anything, they should double the penalty for losing if you forfeit.
