I really enjoy modern day fantasy (or urban fantasy), but unfortunately many books, films and TV shows in this setting are just a supernatural romances (thanks, Twilight). I played only one good RPG in such setting is Vampire: The Masquerade Bloodlines. At least comic books are still a place that I can get my fix. I wish that CD Project will get their hands on World Of Darkness license someday...

Yeah CDPR and the World of Darkness would be a strong mix. :) A pity so few RPGs came out for it (just Redemption and Bloodlines). Both are great IMO.

Oh god. Shame you never read this book:

It's current time kinda/sorta fantasy with a lot of humor. Im pretty sure it will never be translated to english.

Thank you, sir, thank you! And shame on me indeed. This is right up my alley!
Language and availability are non issues - I am lucky enough to live in Chicago, where Polish bookstores are abundant. There is just a two or three week wait until they will import the book.

There is also World of Darkness MMORPG (if you're into MMOs), but there is rather little information on it so far, although it looks quite promising.

Are there any bug fixes/community patches for the Redemption? I've been thinking of trying it, but people say that there are some nasty bugs in the game.

And finally, Planescape: Torment. How would you classify that one? ;)

I'd classify Planescape as weird fiction without batting an eyelid.

I don't mean to be smartass, but Planescape by itself IS the setting, a complete and well-defined one.
Torment is just one story told inside of Planescape setting. There are plenty of others, as well
as books, manuals, artwork and all kinds of things. I've been playing pen and paper Planescape
for few years, and i think if i had to pick one, Planescape would be my favorite setting.
Bizarre, imaginative, picturesque and unlimited. I think i'm in love with the whole
planes concept ever since i read The Chronicles of Amber.

European fantasy is like a juicy fruit with lots of yummy jucie that everyone loves that you can squezee over and over and over again and there is still tons of fresh jucie left.

Seriusly i love European fantasy...

I'd probably say Japan Feudal Realistic/Fantasy. Closely followed by Sci-fi and European Medieval Fantasy.

I just hate the fact that there are no good Feudal Japan games... At least set in like Third person or something. There's Total War, yeah, but I want a good Japan inspired RPG for fuck sake. Where you can play as a samurai, ninja or warrior monk. Bam. Gotta make that game in the future, gonna be badass.

Personally, I am bored of European fantasy. It's too familiar and the same. I like the Witcher cause it's Eastern European, but I wouldn't want that many more of that.

The reason I picked Roman or Middle Eastern is that in terms of RPGs, I cannot recall a single one in either period, where it's full of potential. Even if you wanted high fantasy, both settings can deliver (well granted, an ancient Greek setting would probably be more interesting than Roman in high fantasy). And in low fantasy, their history is full of awesome.

I know all that. That's why I wrote "Planescape" without the "Torment" part. The entire Planescape setting falls neatly into weird fiction territory.

I guess I mostly go with my RL interests which are ancient and early medieval Europe and Near East. Some sci fi interests me. I prefer both fantasy and sci fi which has some historical realism or parallels. Post apocalyptic can be fun because it's almost like reverting to earlier eras with more primitive societies. Same with the Dune universe- it's in space, but draws on the conflicts between ancient empires for its inspiration.

Majority of RPGs are in medieval fantasy and I really cant get excited over that anymore.

I would like to see RPG in all of those settings in OP. This just shows how is potential of games still wasted painfully.

If I had to pick three, I would go with:
Ancient Greece
Vernesque Steampunk with lots of traveling and sense of wonder that is presented on that picture
Arabian/Middle East

And of course I wouldnt mind some good hard sci-fi.

Won't say I have a 'favourite' setting; it all depends on the game, its writing and general quality. Am a bit fed up of dragons and the 'classic' fantasy stuff, but with a new twist that can be interesting too, like the RR Martin books.

I would like to see an RPG set in the ancient/medieval Middle East. So much potential there (but without the anti-Islamism, please). Not too hot on science fiction in general either, I'm more into the older time periods. Story doesn't have to be a "save the world" scenario either. There are plenty of those.

Would like to see something from the Viking era too. Lots of potential there too.

Generally depends on the game, and what mood I'm in.

But I do favor European Medieval Fantasy / Realistic and Sci-Fi. Wish there were good games set in Middle East.

I agree. I can't even name any good game set in the middle east. Splinter Cell and other games that concern wars perhaps, but those are boring imo.

Mine is something in between soft and hard sci-fi like ME1(in particular it's codex description of things).

1: Postapocalyptic -> Fallout
2: Hard and Soft SciFi -> Mass Effect (1!), Star Wars KotOR I+II
3: European Medieval (fantasy) -> The Witcher 1+2, of course ^^

The games do not necessarily follow the ranking of their relative settings in my list of favorites ;)

European Medieval fantasy, preferably with minimal use of magic (eg, Witcher series)
