People who just whip out their phones when they are bored, or when to attempt to look occupied with something. Christ, just catch up on some sleep or something. I see too many people hunched over smartphone screens procrastinating away...

How do you know they're procrastinating? I mostly use the 'free' time to catch up on saved articles. There are apps for other purposes than mindless entertainment.

Now, people who whip their phone out in the middle of a conversation to 'check their messages' and blatantly ignore everyone for no real reason... they grind my gears.

I am kinda guilty of doing that but only for one reason. The Blackberry has a red flash whenever one gets messages or notifications. And it irritates me when it flashes so I always have to check anything new to get rid of it / ocd behavior

Keep it in your pocket, not on the table.

I can't. The knowledge of it possibly flashing in my pocket annoys me.

Here is the phone I have

It was probably designed in the last millennium. It does the job bloody well though. I've had it for probably 5 years, and I had the exact same phone before that, which was sadly lost at Roskilde when I was piss-drunk and lost all my gear :(

There are three things I use a phone for
1) Send messages
2) Call
3) Check the time
(And sometimes rudimentary news checking when bored out of my skull in a place with little else to do)

I can't perform brain surgery with it, but it's a bloody good phone, and it's not that great of a surveillance device either, like every new phone out there, which probably all of you guys have. Yay. I'll keep using it as long as it works, which I hope is a long time. It would probably be impossible to buy a new one of the same or similar type now, which lasts longer than one drop to the floor. I don't understand why people need two zillion "apps" (a word I bloody HATE) on their PHONE. So often do I see a group of people together, and all of them have their head down into either their phone or computer or tablet, or whatever all these new fancy toys are called these days.

The fact your thoughts are on the blinky light on your phone and not on the conversation says a lot.

@Pangaea
Haha, I have a Nokia Prism, it looks classy and does exactly the same as yours :) However I do own an iPod touch - so much space for music! - and I definitely went through a 'try out ten million apps' phase. Now I know two things: I don't need all those apps, and I'm never going to buy a smarthpone because I loathe typing on touchscreen. It's so imprecise and uncomfortable. That said, yeah, I hate it when people are hunched over their little screens while "hanging out". I don't see the point.

I've heard the same about the typing on those things from many people - yet they keep buying them. People are strange. I guess it's the "cool" thing to have, and damn functionality, you just gotta have those gadgets.

I have an iPod too, which my sister gave me for my birthday a year or so ago. It doesn't seem to be working any more though. Maybe using it twice was a bit too much. Mine is a tiny thing though, it says shuffle on it. Could almost hide it up my nose if I tried.

It doesn't exactly anger me, but I'm bloody fed up of being sick. 4 days now, and my head feels like exploding and overcooking, changing every now and then. Sneezing like crazy, and the nose is so tight nothing comes out even if I blow like my lungs are about to pop. Even the muscles ache. Really hope it passes soon. Thought I was getting better yesterday, but it's back to square one now :(

These last posts must sound like I'm about 76 :D

Ah yes, the iPod Shuffle, a friend of mine only buys those. She's had 2 or 3 by now, I think they're great if you don't care much about actually picking what song you want to play. It's weird yours broke so fast.

Everyone I talked to says the same about typing, I just don't get it. I like the way touch-actions feel otherwise, but typing? No thanks. I enjoy some of the apps, WiFi on the go (my mobile internet is waaay too expensive, not to mention non-functional on an old phone), and the aforementioned article/book/website feed saving. Very useful because I don't like reading long text on the computer monitor.

That fever sounds awful, grab some tea and get better soon :c

I don't know guys, I don't mind if a friend needs to check the phone while with me. Heck, sometimes I have to do that too if I get a message from someone important. If your friends and you have an established bond of mutual respect, then it's really not an issue if they use/check their phone while chilling with you.

I agree with Pangaea about smartphones being over hyped. I used my older feature phone for many years until it broke and all I could get was a smartphone. And maybe it has to do with my line of work (grad school, research and teaching) but it is SUPER useful! None of these things are necessary but they can be useful. And they can be distracting if used incorrectly.

I take buses all the time and now I can use that time to read articles, manage urgent email (sometimes related to project proposals), hell, I can even connect to remote computers via an SSH client. I can also quickly review and edit shared documents online. I can also quite comfortably read ebooks and of course listen to music. It was all much better than I expected. I keep everything turned off though, especially the GPS and mobile internet, which I only turn on when needed.

I do have to add one thing to the angry list: the crazy information control race we are experiencing right now. The world is slowly succumbing to mega corporations and they all fight to know who we are, where we are and what we like.

I arrived late to the smartphone party and I missed out on some cool true Linux phones, but I'd gladly trade my Android for a free OS smartphone with equivalent hardware anytime.

It's not either or. My thoughts are all over the place all the time, so I am perfectly able to have two simultaneous thoughts and do justice to both.

And it's not something I can help, I probably have a mild case of OCD.

We're an angry bunch lately aren't we? I think we should all join hands and sing "Kumbaya," and watch the flames dance hypnotically as they consume the bodies of our enemies. Amen.
