What TW3 could learn from Ryse

Look at this new gameplay video from Ryse:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5viqlFDavU

I'm aware of the controversy about too much QTE in the game Ryse, but this video shows a good combat system, and as far as I can tell, I don't see any QTE abuse.
Crytek is doing an awesome work IMO.

So, what's cool in this video?

- Camera use
- Animations
- executions

I think that if CDProjekt wants to deliver "an action game experience into a big open world RPG" (they said that in almost all interviews), they really should be inspired by Crytek skillful use of cameras and cinematic feel.

The more I see videos from Dark Souls 2 and DA: Inquisition, the more I see the wrong direction both games are taking about combat: it looks like the same clumsy, rigid, boring combat system of a past generation.

It is really possible to design a complex and deep combat system without sacrificing fluidity, emotional involvement and cinematic experience. That's what I really appreciated about watching Crytek's video: they want to emotionally engage players through a fast-paced and dynamic combat.

CDprojekt's devs should really consider to make TW3 combat look and feel like this.

Actually, I don't find it looking realistic at all. And the camera is a bit too close up at times for my taste. I like to have a better overview of the battle ground. And the combat system still shows too much QTE.

Personally I find that what CDPR has said about their combat system in TW3, sounds a lot better than what I see in this video. So I'd like them to just stick to their vision instead of taking inspiration from this kind of combat.

Meh, I cant imagine having those annoying QTE´s in a classic combat. Finishers after Aard, maybe..
Im sure CDP has a much better system in stock for us ;).
And dont forget that Ryse is a fighting game, not an RPG unlike games you mentioned above.

Well, you summed it up pretty well I think. Nice camera use, very fancy animations (though they seem a bit quick to me). Gameplay itself looks unfortunately pretty dull, QTE and 'random animations'. I'd much rather have good gameplay instead of good-looking gameplay.

In fact, my current favourite swordplay simulator is Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, by far. It's much slower, but it's challenging in 1v1 duels (and honestly, when was the last time a swordgame featured challenging 1v1s? Everything seems so focussed on mass-murder nowadays...). Singleplayer Chivalry combat with slightly fancier animations and very good AI would probably be my ideal combat for TW3.

But as mentioned above, combat isn't the biggest focus for TW3 so having just TW2/Dark Souls style group combat is fine with me, as long as the other areas of the game are still as good as they have ever been.

Thought Ryse did look next Gen, but looked hella clunky with the controls.

I do agree about the camera work. It is good, but slow motion is annoying, especially considering how fast it is.

I'd prefer a slower combat overall but not slow motion, screw that mechanic.

Every single execution in Ryse is a QTE. There is an option for the players to turn off the indicator thats what you see in the video, but make no mistake every single slow-mo action in the video is a QTE.

You're forgetting The Witcher has an advantage. His inhuman speed and reflexes. He's a mutant. A game with Ryse has a human character. The disadvantage is that the MC should not be that much better than his opponent. That's what makes it very tough to create a realistic approach fighting in games. You can see the enemy in the video often just side stepping around the MC and waiting before they attack. In real life combat, they would not wait and unless you have inhuman characteristics, it's nearly impossible to make it realistic.

So I hope in The Witcher 3 you get to fight enemies that fight realistically but with your speed and reflexes you'll be able to beat them. Don't make the AI picking their noses but make Geralt have an advantage over them. Still you should not be able to engage a lot of enemies at once and expect to live another day.

The only thing I would like to see is cutting of limbs, heads and penetrating armors and skin. That's it.

Good lord that was annoying to watch. All those cue execution sounds were irritating.

I agree on the camera work, animations and overall flow look pretty decent.

But I loathe this kind of "I'll wait for my turn to strike" AI, it's so obvious in this video it hurts.

As you just said, it is very dependent on personal preferences. ^^ I would not want CDPR to not do their own combat system and copy an other one instead just because I like it.
I, for instance, just can't enjoy watching because of those slow-mo executions (which are QTEs by the way...), that I simply don't like.^^

Just imagine if the combat in the game looks a bit like the one in the Killing Monsters trailer... That would be so awesome. Maybe hold back a bit on the cinematography. What I was referring to was the flow. Meaning you can cast signs without drawing your weapon and maybe add a Gears of War Quick-Reload like mechanic for quickly drawing small arms like the dagger. Being able to attack other enemies while disarming one would be sweet (kinda like in Bloodrayne where you can keep shooting while "feeding")!!!

The dagger is not Geralt's, though.^^

@ Viz: If you can perform disarm-to-kill-with-own-weapon in-game, that would be EVEN SWEETER.

I think it looked just like W40k Space Marine melee combat just fancier animations and graphics...

My opinion:

I am rather tired of the pervasive Matrix after-taste that this is giving off. While the cinematic flamboyancy, with its impish camera and dramatic deceleration and acceleration, might be thought of as suitable for a demo or a CGI trailer like Killing Monsters - both of which aimed at grabbing and keeping one's attention for just 3 minutes - it'd be ill-suited for a game that lasts 100 hours. It'd quickly get old, tiresome and just become a nuisance.

One additional thought. TW3 is said to be a mature game. I feel portraying killing as this relentless, detached, stylized, almost abstract act would be forcing a juvenile point-of-view upon the game. I'm also doubtful it'd be in-character.

Hmm...

I want TW3 to be an action-RPG, not some QTE/combo-fest, okey?
Camera is way to close, it looks like a bloody Deadliest Warrior when you look at it. Feel? Press a button to win. Yay. That's what I saw in the video so far. Where are we going? Into DA2 territory? ( "Press a button and something "awesome" happens" RIIIGHHHTT? ) Hell, forget about fighting groups of people with that camera.

I like TW2 combat, I think it's well executed to punish a player that is just smashing a button. If you click - you commit to a swing - that's the thing I like. Wage your chances, use distractions, parry, evade and smash - it adds a lot of elements just to the combat.
If CDPR wants to make it more fluent - sure, I can get behind that.
Changing it to 300-slow-mo-style-QTE-fest would be a disaster in my little opinion.
