You forget in the first short story when he fought the striga. the way that it was described was very similar to W1 intro fight. like a sort of flame thrower.
In the johnny demo Geralt uses it on some Drowners one of them loses half his health, and the other one dies. Also it burns several trees, and causes some swamp gas to explode. Another press release of the game describes igni flames turning "blue" at higher levels.
I´m Pretty certain that the Drowners only died/lost so much health because of the swamp gases you metioned
Well don't forget they where only ten hours in at that point, so I imagine Igni had a ways left to go on leveling it.
