Prolly start on hard, get a feel for the difficulty, and see if I need to turn it up or down. I hope difficulty can be changed on the fly so I can tweak it to my liking. You never know in advance how a RPG is balanced, if higher difficulty adds more challenge or just throws more hp bloat tedium at you.

I'll pick the equivalent to dark mode from tw2, if there is such a thing in tw3.

I don't think there is an insane mode. Only dark with permadeath. While i find this interesting i also find it tedious when you have to die on a RPG which can clock at 200hours. Especially when there will probably be many cheap deaths because you went too far to explore. I'll start it on hard cause i find anything below it quite easy and i love to challenger my self in every game. Unless the dark difficulty can be played without the permadeath then i;ll play dark.

Like the YS series, it's nightmare on first try or it is kinda pointless to me if you play on a lower difficulty and learn everything by heart.

this may seem like a stupid question but i heard the combat was somewhat influenced by dark souls series(i say somewhat because i really dont expect it to be much like dark souls combat wise) but does anyone know what difficulty would be dark souls mode? i most likely will go for that

I don't think there's a permadeath in this game.

I am honest - i will choose "easy" for my very first attempt. I really hope you can change difficulty on the fly (if not, i will start with "normal"). I don't know yet what will be affected by difficulty right now, so i can't tell that i will enjoy playing on easy, normal or hard - i will have to try it. if "easy" means that you don't have to prepare for a fight because you can kill everything without oils, signs and potions i would be disappointed. I am not an excessive gamer, i do only have time for 1-2 quests a day (or maybe 1-2hours of playing), and i don't want to need 3 attempts every time.
Also it depends on how good mouse and keyboard works out. if i am able to re-bind the keys in a way that really suits me, i would like to play the game on hard difficulty settings too (but not when i have to shift-alt-click to parry or something..).

This pretty much answers your question.

Will there or will there not be dark difficulty and permadeath?

I think this question has been avoided in the last 3 months.
Many people asked about this on The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt -- Live Gameplay + Q&A on Twitch.
But none of the developers answer.

Only answer is the community answer that nobody really knows.
And it was talked about in an article in February, how passionate the developers was about it.

I just think there are a few days left, it is so dangerous to tell us if whether it is in the game or not? Nice to know that maybe you need to complete the main story on the "Death March!" before unlocking the dark difficulty, or if this is a mode you want to release later on. It's not like it is a spoiler thing.

I just think since they already said how passionate they were about this mode, then to say nothing and show nothing of its existence is not so nice.

PS: I'm not mad about it, just thought it be nice to know. :smiling:

Dark all the way ! Since Dark Souls 1 & 2 NG++ and Witcher 2 on Hard i love it to be challenged. If you beat a boss after 30 trys, its way more satisfying than on the first try.

Just so you know, Kevin VanOrd from Gamespot said the Normal difficulty was too easy, and that you should pick one level above the one you're used to.

I was going to play on Hard anyway.

As the reviews show the Game is defintly extremly easy. I'll play on Dark and probably try to mod it to make it as hard as Witcher 2 Vanilla.
Reviews also have shown that there are way too many Lowlevel Quests, so you will come to a point where you are outlevel all of the Quests and it gets even easier.

There is permadeath after all. It's called "Death March", if you read the GOG achievements.

My first playthrough of The Witcher 2 was on Hard and i didn't die once. I regretted not choosing Insane because of that. I won't make the same mistake with The Witcher 3.

Well getting 100% trophies just got a lot more complicated.

Anyways, after struggling like crazy on witcher 2 normal difficulty, I was going to pick the same for W3 but according to the reviews the game can get too easy in the second half, so i guess hard it is.

I fully agree. Hard mode at very least. I made the mistake of playing DA:I on normal difficulty, and before long the game became very easy. Although both DA:I and TW3 both have an option to change difficulty on the fly, I will start out on hard and go dark if I feel I need to.

Listening to Kevin van Ord's review where he talks about side quests allowing one to out level the main quest, I wonder if it makes sense to up the difficulty part way through. (Given that I am easily distracted by shiny things and run off on side quests this is if particular interest to me...)

Another option might be to "split" the difficulty level and use the experience reduction from the harder modes while playing on a lower difficulty. This way you avoid outleveling the main quest but you get the difficulty challenge you want all the way through the game... But will the game system allow you to puck and choose which difficulty elements you want from each level? (Unfortunately I doubt it...) If not, this might be a good place for a "Community Unapper" mod...

No, because as shown in the GOG Live Stream, you can turn the difficulty level from easy, normal to "Death March!" while playing the game and back down.

Doesn't that lose the whole point of perma-death if you can just put down the difficulty in the middle of the game when it gets hard so you don't die and then just set it up when you feel safe?

Because perma-death is suppose to delete your saves.
Say you play on easier difficulty and you have many saves on that difficulty, but then you change to "Death March!" in the middle of the game by accident and you die and all your saves are gone.

I don't think so.
