"Whirl" ability does not work

"Whirl" ability does not work

I just unlocked the whirl ability. Attempted to perform the ability by pressing and holding the X button but nothing happened but a single swing. The same thing happens when I hold the Y button as well. This happens within a battle and outside of a battle. Please assist.

Did you forget to put it on the right thingy? where you put all abilities for usage?
