why does Geralt swing and just stand there?

Most of the time when you see the target indicator on an enemy, and you press attack, Geralt attacks. Maybe 20% of the time he just stands in place and swings at thin air. What is the purpose of this?

Most of the time when you see the target indicator on an enemy, and you press attack, Geralt attacks. Maybe 20% of the time he just stands in place and swings at thin air. What is the purpose of this?

Are you making a strong attack from out of range? Or against an agile target such as a Drowner?

On a fast attack, Geralt closes with the target and doesn't miss. But on a strong attack, Geralt doesn't close, and the target can dodge.

It happens when I'm quite close to the enemy. And yeah I'm using fast to close the distance.
