I think the game version of Emhyr really did want to leave the position as Emperor and the lack of an heir kind of made that impossible.

The Prophecy of ruling half the world then all of it would also make sense but if THAT were the case then WHY would we want to place her on the throne again unless we were closet Nilfgaardians?

I also got the impression that, as bad as Emhyr was, that he was utterly sincere in his desire to help Ciri and try to make up for their past.

The Empire was his "bribe" to get back in her good graces.

Ciri = Emhyr's daughter being common knowledge is wrong anyway. So by changing this, cdpr changed the entire Emperor motive, which makes sense of course, by the way they introduced the quest for finding Ciri.
He marries a fake Ciri and then acknowledge the real Ciri as his daughter? How the hell can he go away with that? How can he prove that? Who would believe him? I mean he does have domestic enemies, who would all pounce on Ciri as soon as she becomes empress, since she can't prove her legitimacy.
I think they made it thay way the did just for simplicity

I also want to throw something else in: Why do you all assume ruling half the world/the entire world according to a prophecy auotmatically means conquest?
You can unite a world by other means...

You could totally do something interesting with the fact Fake Ciri's fakeness being discovered is why his position is suddenly tenuous.

Good idea, but that still leaves him with the missing proof that Ciri is his daughter, I mean when his people know that the fake Ciri is fake, why would they believe the real Ciri is Emhyrs daughter? One time a Liar, always a Liar...

Eh, that would just go along with why Emhyrs has to win the War in the North. Once he does that, he just MURDERS EVERYONE WHO WOULD DISAGREE.

Well it actually would explain why Emhyr is killed by his own men when Radovid or Dijkstra stay alive.

That is a pretty big retcon since Emhyr is bigger than Jesus in Nilfgaard.

How he got 2% popularity rating is pretty damn surprising.

It doesn't really make sense any which way you look at it unless the Emperor suffered brain damage.

He wouldn't be the only one.

In the books Emyhr abandoned the prophecy entirely after the battle at Stygga castle. He left Ciri alone and left for Nilfgaard while Geralt and Yennefer avoided suicide..
