Will mission failures prohibit story progression?

+
We see this a lot in video games today. Developers want you to play the game how they intended it to be. Very rarely do we get games that let us continue the gameplay/story, if we do a mission incorrectly or fail it completely. I know CP2077 will have a wide variety of gameplay styles, but will we see a mission failed screen if we fail a mission or do it incorrectly? If so, will the story play out differently? Will their be consequences in our failed attempts?

Hey,
I guess that as in the Witcher 3, maybe you will get "failed" quest status if you don't finish it before some other (main) story event, e.g. if you don't win gwent card from baron and he leaves Velen sometime after, this quest will be displayed as "failed" I believe.

You actually got different EXP and money, or something... if you complete a quest in different ways.

But not hardcore - e.g. if you let Lambert die, the game still moves on.

I hope that as about CP, it will be at least the same, but maybe more open - like you can still get all achievements, items, or whatever even if everybody dies... :)

Do quests have fail states?

PW: Yes, you can fail quests. What we don't have however is a game over state, the only game over that you will get is when you die. So when you fail a quest then it's now part of the story, you have to deal with the consequences.

Well, if you fail critical mission, game over and load the save is in order. If you go to the grocer's by car and struck and kill a mother of five, you pretty sure will fail your main quest: Going to the Grocer's. Game over man. Load a save :)
I hope, however, that it will be possible to fail side quest and that failure will further translate into main quest narrative. Of course, players should be able to try as long as they want to succeed, but "fail to progress" should also be an option. Of course, critical failure should be game over and force to load a save (or, for those hardcore realists outthere, start a new game :) )

Progression-breaking failures aren't needed. What's the point of them? If it's a story it's meant to be completed (one way or another). You most likely can make bad decisions that will lead to inferior results (similar to other RPG games), but not something that completely prevents you to advance through the game.

Hopefully you can fail missions. Today's standard is that you can not, unless you die, which is very, very cheap, but if all goes well, we'll not see that.

Is this so important? I dont see nothing innovative here, games has used this forever already, so let devs choose, whats best fit for the IP/game. Yeah, it doesnt heve anykind of marketting value.

Maybe people don't like a linear game? Ya, games have let people choose their own path for a long time but not many. It's really boring and tiredsome to get the same ending, no matter how differently you play a openworld game such as GTA 5. NakeyJakey makes a great point about this in his RDR2 review.

Right, I would have understood this more like 5+ year ago, seems like obsolete stuff.

Btw, is this the direction YouTubers are gonna take us? YouTubers are even worst than Journalist, they give even less more about game industry.

I guess how quests are handled in The Witcher 3 is a good point of reference: secondary quests can fail if they are ignored for too long time (and in some cases they might have an impact on the main story), while main quests are generally unfailable, but it is possible to get a "bad" ending depending on the decisions made. And it can sometimes also lead to a game over state indirectly if an NPC dies (like Keira Metz in the Wandering in the Dark quest). What seems very unlikely is a Morrowind-like design, where the game can be continued after the main story fails.

What? NakeyJakey was being completely honest about RDR2. It's a fun game but has it's flaws. No one is judging you for liking a game that has flaws. YouTubers are calling out the corporate BS and PC culture from mega video gaming companies like EA and Ubisoft, while Journalist just write crappy articles with false information.

They can do whatever they want, but I just believe YouTubers are going to be worse Journalist or what they are called? Neverthteless they will have massive impact on game industry- At least old-school Journalist had to do something in order to become one, rent website, build it, start doing it, YouTubers can just start talking out of their brain all kind of crap and share it to people without thinking, if theres pretty boy or girl they will listen.

I actually thought about it, I think game industry should let Youtubers do whatver they do like 5 year and then change their marketting to what youtubers cant follow them, but we will see, or will game industry watch when YouTubers run over them. But seems to me game industry gotta pump up their marketting, if YouTubers are gonna take an advantage of their stuff.

Failing a quest and having to live with the consequences works for me.

The only time I really hate failure states is being caught during very poorly done stealth sections, which I trust CDPR won't be including :)

I can usually live with escort mission failure states unless the person you are protecting is suicidal and keeps running straight into the enemies lol

But according to what was posted earlier the only game over failure state is from dying and that sounds good to me :)

I hope there are stealth missions...
