Will Sony's Censorship Policies Affect CP2077?

I am not worried about Sony , they like money to much to give it away to microsoft / Xbox . I am more worried about where i am from Australian censorship but fingers crossed CDPR will explain enough to get the game thru uncut .

As far as I know, Sony bans japanese games that have, to some extent, pedophilic material. It's not like they ban everything related to sex. I don't really understand why this thing became this big.

I'm pretty sure that those games were not banned by microsoft as well for the simple reason that they're not being released on Xbox at all.

Yes, exactly. People hear censorship and become crazy, but they fail to research the reason why. It's already been said that Sony wants their japanese market to have the same standards of their western market.

This game is 18+ .... if Sony want to make this 12+ then.. i think Sony will lose a lot...

This thread is still going on...so much false information. Its not Sony that censors, its specific countries laws that do. Sony also has nothing to do with CDPR.

If Sony forces me to purchase an Xbox for one game, to play CP2077 uncensored I will never purchase another Sony product for as long as I live.

Just an official reminder that this thread is wholly speculative. Before people start making ultimatums and gathering into internet brute squads to challenge Sony's censorship policies --

-- keep in mind that Sony has said NOTHING about censoring Cyberpunk in any way. This thread is purely hypothetical discussion.

There are plenty of titles with mature content that Sony supports without issue: RDR, GTA, Yakuza, Dead or Alive... No reason exists to believe Cyberpunk will be any different.

It's not much, but the PlayStation version of DMC5 censored a couple of minor moments that are left untouched on Xbox and PC. This is still speculative but, given the fact that DMC is the most recent major release, it's fair to use it as an educated guess when looking ahead to how Sony will handle 2077.

As of this point, censorship has only affected Japanese game developers. But DMC5, while Japanese-made, isn't one of the outright explicit titles that you sometimes see from eastern developers. With 2077 likely containing more mature content than DMC5, more on par with Witcher 3, do we think Sony's recent disregarding of ESRB ratings is cause for a PS4 player's concern?

A lens flare over some nudity isn't exactly game-changing. But if this escalates over time into dumbing down entire scenes/quests/characters to avoid mature content, 2077 is important enough for me to switch sides of the console aisle. Might be an overreaction. But there's reason enough to start asking those questions. What does everyone think?

Why censor an 18+ game for.. Nudity?

Seems.. Extreme.. Even childish (the irony) on the part of Sony. Glad I was planning on grabbing Cp2077 on the PC anyway.

Exactly. Between the ESRB's inability to make games rated M for gambling mechanics, and the fact that an M rating can be censored for no apparent reason, I'm honestly not sure why they exist. The generations playing PlayStation (and gaming in general) are hypersensitive to censorship, myself included. So I can't imagine a watered down Cyberpunk game selling very well if people have PC/Xbox alternatives.

And then you have lootboxes in fifa which is pegi 3. That's bullshit.

I agree on censorship for Japanese pedo-ish stuff, but for a butt crack in DMC5, less than any plumber usually shows on daily basis... I don't really get it.

CP2077 demo showed frontal nudity, I'll be mad if the ps4 version will be censored.

Seriously though. I consider the more extreme Japanese examples to be more of a quality control issue than outright censorship. Those games, in addition to some of the intentionally offensive trash you see on Steam, should be looked at to maintain the quality and prestige of platforms like PlayStation that have a lot to lose. But 2077's quality isn't exactly in that category. It's gonna be a work of art that just so happens to show mature content.

Censorship can affect a PG12/16 game.
For a Mature game, +18, made for adult, I doubt there will be any censorship.
Cyberpunk will most likely won't include hardcore porn scene in a way that focus on it (it's not a porn game).
It's a game made for adults, so kids shouldn't allowed to play it, even buy it, no reason to censor it.
You can hack a people in half etc... but can't see a penis?
You want to censor Cyberpunk? Well, just cancel it and redo it...
I mean, in the 40mn gameplay, we saw sex, ultraviolence, we even saw some drug abuse (an NPC even give some to you and you can happily accept and get high with him), there's rampan poverty, most likely some creepy hookers and shady stuff creeping around at nightfall...

It's cyberpunk, it's gonna be ugly by definition (unlike Deus Ex where everything is polished, in Cyberpunk, the game, the setting is very dark and non-censor friendly, like snuff braindance tapes, etc...).
So I'm not really scared about censorship, CDPR aren't stupid, I guess they'll turn the most "sensitive" things in a way that have a meaning, it's not hatred where you have no point beside dismembering people.

Here the world is ugly and said to be +18 mature content by the get go, so why censorship should have a word on it?
The thing is, you only fear censorship if you plan on releasing something for "kinda all audience" (young/teen involved).
if your game is +18, you can do almost everything you want, it's "mature only" for that reason.

The only "thrilling" stuff would be sex, but here again, except for a bunch of penis and soft porn here and there, I doubt CDPR really invested ALL THAT TIME to make a porn game with your whole point being to bang around in Night City...

I agree on censorship for Japanese pedo-ish stuff.

Hem, I wouldn't "Censor" that, I'd send those guys in jail...
It's even shocking to think that they think it's "ok" to sell those stuff to begin with... Creepy AF...

All I can say is...I sure hope not. The last thing that, I, personally would like to see is my dark, gritty genre' turned into a damned kiddy game. CDPR, JUST SAY NO, PLEASE!

Nudity wasn't censored in the Cyberpunk making of on the Playstation YT channel, right? DMC5 was sure a bad surprise, because it was only buttcheeks, but I wouldn't worry about Cyberpunk 2077. For example, Metro Exodus wasn't censored even it has breasts and strippers.

There were some "dancers" but not really naked. I didn't see any naked breasts or other parts in Metro Exodus, and i played it start to finish.

DMC 5 is pegi 18 and censored only on ps4 versions. And trust me, there was absoulutely no reason to censor those scenes.

I figure this is the thing to look for early. In 2005, Microsoft floated the idea of a premium currency to make smaller purchases via Xbox live more convenient than buying entire games over again via the online store. They referred to them as microtransactions.

Of course some DMC ass isn't make-or-break for a game's experience. But Sony's sending a very subtle message that, regardless of a game's rating, they can enforce this sort of thing. If it continues, PlayStation slowly becomes the inferior, non-definitive experience for anything that isn't their own first-party exclusives.
