Yep, I know. I have both games in my shelf, on Steam, and on GOG.
I realize things will probably be the same as last time, unless anything changes.
I don't mean to sound angry or irritated, I just think that this shouldn't be an issue, especially with a developer as customer-friendly as CDPR.
But maybe it's out of their hands.

I honestly don't know the commercial impact of offering it. On the one hand, if Valve expects the developer to pay for the service, I could see why it isn't available. On the other hand, it may encourage more to buy from GOG if they knew they could register in their Steam library.

Anyway, we really just need to wait and see.

Actually, Steam is a direct competitor to CDPs own platform, GoG. So offering a Steam version at all, is quite a gesture. But as CDP promotes DRM-free games, and the Steam client definitely is DRM, CDP will want to offer the DRM-free version in boxed copies, not a Steam-version. So those who absolutely want the Steam DRM, will have to purchase the digital version directly from Steam themselves.

That makes sense. And I have thought about that aspect. I just think that a CD key should be valid for wherever you choose to use it.
But I'll live if they do it like last time. It's still a heck of a deal to get it on GOG for free.

Well, look at it another way:
I don't think Steam will be as generous as GoG, in giving away free keys if you already own the game on another platform.
So setting up keys in such a way that they can be redeemed on Steam no matter where you purchase them, means that Steam would want to get part of the profits of each and every game sold... no matter if it were sold on Steam, GoG, or physical. I'm sure Steam would love that deal, but that's not going to happen.
And who knows, maybe with the GoG Galaxy client, you might soon not see the need anymore to get all your games on Steam anyway...

Why would you want the Steam DRM?

People have their own reasons for wanting to use Steam, it's a consumer choice. And I'd suggest we leave the pro-Steam / anti-DRM discussion out of this thread, otherwise we can easily get sidetracked.

Steam + CE is the optimal solution, in my opinion, - immediate cross-platform access with pre-load via digital distribution with additional community service + cool physical stuff. I hope that this amount of financial support for CDPR from me will be enough :)

Also, I hope that The Witcher Adventure Game will hit all distribution platforms in next months.

For the price I don't see a reason why not getting a backup copy at GOG. But if they do that, like last time, people who suport the devs directly through GOG will feel cheated. I know I did when steam users could get the game on GOG.

That's why they should give a backup copy of the game, but not all the extras - as I described on the first page of this thread.

The basic digital version would indeed be a good idea.

To me as well just the digital copy of the game only (without the pre-order bonuses) on GOG after buying the retail version would be more than satisfying

Bumping this up for more discussion and in the hopes of a dev responding.

I'm still on the fence about buying the CE and knowing whether or not I could redeem it on Steam is essential. :)

Honestly I'd recommend just preordering the CE now (Gamestop seems like they still are accepting preorders, Amazon's already out - if you're in America). You can always cancel later if you need to, but you may not be able to get the CE if you wait (or at least preordered).

Eh, while it would be cool I doubt that this is gonna happen. I mean this would basically mean that Valve had to give you a free key with the retail version since we were told that the retail versions will have no DRM whatsoever. GayBen is not that generous :p
