You missed the key difference. To use games bought from Steam you need to have the Steam account (legally). To use games bought from GOG you don't need to have GOG account once you bought them.

And how do you buy games on GOG without GOG account? How do you download games from GOG without GOG account?
You don't.

I can already imagine the posts of gratitude we would see if they did put optional steam codes into the box.

"Steam codes? Why not optional GOG codes instead I thought you guys were against DRM"
"I guess this is warming us up for the DRM Galaxy will secretly introduce, screw you CDPR I'm never trusting you again"
"WTF I bought the steam version as soon as pre-orders went live and now you pull this stunt? I want my money back"

Yeah I don't care how highly some people think of steam. If a company that demonizes DRM suddenly pulled this stunt, even with good intentions. Then you will see that not all of those "75 million users" are loyal fans of the service.

Hey, if CDP offered both GOG and Steam keys in their retails copies, I would love that.

Yes and they would make a big joke of themselves by claiming to be DRM free and giving Steam keys only because of convenience.

Well yes that's true but it raises a confusing question. Why would you want to delete your GOG account?

I think the only problem with introducing all these extra keys if in fact they did and also which I highly doubt they will would be inducing a lot of keys being given away or sold to which CDPR would not see any additional benefit from . (Purely hypothetical) Say they sold 500,000 copies of the game with additional keys and everyone sold or gave the additional keys away . Now you have 1,000,000 games active but CDPR only sold and will receive profit from 500,000 .

I bought witcher 1 and 2 on Steam, and only now playing the GOG.com DRM-FREE versions because the awful performance of the Steam version...
Faster loading times and +20 FPS on average... only on GOG.com :)

I wasn't serious. I was mocking the whole "They should give us a Steam key for nothing" idea.

That's not the point. Scenarios when account is deleted (by you or by the service) may be not very common, but it's still a possibility. Requiring one to have the account to be able to play games legally is hardly called DRM-free.

You must had seriously shitty setup because I had no such problem with either versions. Whether it's steam or gog - they run absolutely the same.

Yeah I'm aware that wasn't the point you were trying to make, but it was a situation that popped to mind following the natural flow of where that conversation was leading to. Don't worry about it.

You know, I enjoy arguing for the sake of arguing as much as the next guy, but you are really stretching it.
Anyway, when you download DRM-free game from Steam, you can save its install folder wherever you want and have basically the same thing as with GOG version (obviously it would be install instead of installER, but effect is the same) without ever needing Steam account again. So...yeah.

I seriously doubt this would happen. People who buy games usually do not pirate, and giving away or selling their steam keys would count as pretty much that. I think it is much more likely that those would like Steam would redeem the game on their own Steam account, and those who do not like it would ignore the key and use DRM-free version.
Larian also did this and they never complained that people would sell Steam keys while using DRM-free copy, since they got both. Because people simply did not do that.
Not to mention all the humble store/bundle games that come with both DRM-free and Steam key and it is not a problem at all.

How come, when the DRM-free version would be available as always, for all the people who prefer that ?
Giving more options =/= removing options.

I know that you can [technically] do it for some games. Steam however [legally] forbids you to do it when you accept the service agreement. That's what I was pointing out. GOG doesn't do such thing.

isn't drm about what you can't do, not what you shouldn't? if I made a game and said it can only be played by you that's hardly drm.

That's not itself DRM, it's a supporting legal stuff which they put in the TOS. Same way for example DMCA 1201 isn't DRM either, but it's quite related. I brought that to demonstrate Steam's approach to this issue in general in contrast with GOG.

Intel i5 3570K
MSI GTX 660 2GB/OC
8 GB RAM

Yeah maybe not that high amount of FPS but a little less. Also i have a very slow HDD ( Seagate Barracuda 1TB 7200RPM) but for Witcher 3, i am buying an SSD.

After many hours of thinking I decided I'll stick with GOG.com Pre-Order. As much as I love Steam, I though that 100% supporting CDPRed is more important for me because after all they are the people that gives us the chance to play this masterpiece saga of Witcher in which they put all their effort to make the best game possible and please their fans. I do this because I love this company and it's products, and even tho DRM was never a problem for me when using Steam - Im glad that CDPR is "fighting" form DRM-Free vision and making it possible at the same time. Much respect to you guys and Im staying with my GoG version :)

I admit I haven't inspected the service agreement so if it is indeed there then you have a point.
Although in practice, it might as well not be there.

Yes, it's there. I quoted the relevant part in my post about it (above in this thread).

GOG key with retail PC version?

Hi all, I found this a few minutes ago and would like to know what you think.
http://www.amazon.com/The-Witcher-3-Wild-Hunt-Pc/dp/B00FUC6SZY/ref=pd_sim_vg_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=0PAG902N0SN6D1KZ52A5
It has this list on the page.
  • Digital GOG Code
  • Pre-Order Benefits
  • Delivered by Email
Do you think it's a mistake or will we be getting a GOG key with the retail PC version?

Amazon has consistently posted advertisements for Witcher 3 presales that strongly indicate they are not in possession of anything resembling facts.

In particular, no promise of a GOG download code has been made. What has been stated is that this was a one-time fix for problems with Witcher 2 distribution, and no decision on whether it might be done again for Witcher 3 has been made.

Don't believe anything Amazon posts about this game.
