I'd like to see the retro 80s look in styles, fashions, anything cosmetic. But not in the technology. The technology should be based on what it would be reasonable to expect in 2077, which means it should be at least as much as we have now, unless there's a reason why something has gone backwards.

Well, sure. And to repost, such a retro-tech would NOT be Cyberpunk 2020.

What's the big example? Big cellphones? Again, 2020 had palm-sized ones already. No wireless? Wireless Cellular was in the game. For computers and devices.

Now, secured wireless..for that you need a Dataterm. And, yes, smartphones, those were not. But small portable computers were, and wearable computers yo could use to hack into NASA, as well as Virtual Reality and braindance.

Cars used a biofuel, grown, not pulled from the earth. There are some flying cars. The Internet IS everywhere AND you could digitally enter it as a virtual reality sim. Cars had autodrive. Food was soy and artificial. Medicine was nano-assisted. There are smartgoggles and smartglasses MUCH more potent than Google Glass.

Really, 99% of the tech in Cyberpunk 2020 was and remains still wellllll ahead of our tech right now. In order to get 80s tech, you'd have to throw out the stuff already in the PnP and make up new stuff.

As I said, I think most people take the 80's feel more about the arts from 2020 than the tech itself.
Anyway I still want some cheesy Motley Crew in my car's radio with my leopard jacket and my red mohawk

I suppose you could call spandex and fear of japan a "vibe" the rest are just people that happened to be alive at the time.
And I assure you the Soviet Union was FAR more influential in terms of it's impact on other nations culture/society the 60's and 70's, unless you happened to live in Afghanistan.

Action hero movies where hardly an 80's invention - Errol Flynn.

I stopped reading this thread once poet followed up Reagan with spandex (what I'd give to see the train of thought that allowed that to occur), but I just want to say that smart phones as we know them are a trend, trends are transitory, and nothing would make the game seem as dated as someone pulling out a trend-box and pretending that it belongs in the future. Technology isn't anywhere near as cyclical as fashion.

(By the way, CDPR, spandex Reagan would make a great easter egg.)

Communication with anyone anytime, instant internet access, the ability to record voice/pictures, and a portable appointment book are hardly trends.
While NONE of that is necessary it is DAMN convenient.

Agreed, but I don't think that smart phone functions are the trend part that are bound to change. It's the form that's almost guaranteed to evolve beyond "little brick you carry with you in your pocket" in the coming years.

This. In terms of fashion it's crucial to have a huge amount of choice. I want to be able to dress as mid '70 punk, '80 glam rock star, I want to be able to choose Miami Vice style suits, Johnny Mnemonic style suits, Blade Runner noir coats, GITS toned down clothing, grunge rag-ish clothing, DX neo-renaissance style, neon goth extravaganza, Matix black leather/latex fetish etc. Some of the '80 vibe is more than welcome. Diversity is the key.

But as Dragon mentioned tech should be based on today predictions of the future.

OK I basically lost a big post (again). Too lazy to type it again so I am going to be brief.

Would Flynn say "YIPEEKIYAY MOTHERFUCKER"????

Or "Consider this a divorce"????

Also:

greed, for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works. Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit. Greed, in all of its forms; greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge has marked the upward surge of mankind. And greed, you mark my words, will not only save Teldar Paper, but that other malfunctioning corporation called the USA.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vscG3k91s58

The point is there were truly memorable characters that defined the era. It's not without reason that Hollywood have dug up the corpses of 80s heroes to bring them back tot he silver screen.

It's hard to define but you know it when you see it.

Yeah, 80s is a genre. Music, fashion, movies, attitude, Greed is Good, absolutely definitive. If you grew up in it, it is often -the-decade. And it did give us cyberpunk. The beginnings were in Metropolis and Philip K Dick, but the 80s gave us the actual genre, much as the 60s gave us the hippies.

Suhiir is from earlier in the century - to her the 80s was probably annoying. Hell, to me it was pretty annoying.

Probably if the censorship of the times had allowed it.

VERY!
I consider the "Yuppie" to be the most detrimental social trend in the last century or two.

Hmm. DINKs were like the paired-yuppie. Double-Income No Kids, for those of you who don't know. I consider them an annoyance upgrade over a single Yuppie.

Still, I did enjoy Michael J Fox in The Secret to My Success. So there's that.

I agree with 227 in that smart phones are more trend than technology and would thus feel antiquated in '77. I just used the word 'thus'.

Well let me ask you this.
What do you think it going to replace them for pocket-size (or smaller) personal communication and information retrieval systems?

Watches with holographic screens or flesh embedded tech. Pulling out my '77 version of the iphone just won't look right.

There are some serious technical issues regarding portable holograms that cause me to place the entire concept in the "science fiction" category.
Watch size or embedded ... maybe. You still need to get the receiver to your ear and the mic to your mouth so unless those are implanted or something they can't get much smaller then they are now because of that.

And, exactly how will that differ, function wise, from a smart phone?

It would feel like me communicating through a land line. Dated. Seriously dated. This is supposed to be a projection of our tech level in the future. It would really break immersion if we have smart phones. Especially since most open world games already use the smart phone as a mechanic.

You don't have to carry anything. You can never lose your connection. It's more immediate and convenient. It's also in line with the idea of augmentation found in the 2020 lore. And carrying a phone around 70 years from now might seem silly.

It seems only fitting that as fancy phones seem to be becoming status symbols more and more, we'll eventually feel the urge to show them off and integrate them into our lives even more. I was definitely thinking "watch" like Slim, though some badass shades might be a bit more practical since they'd already be near your ear. As for the mic, something omnidirectional that recognizes the human voice and phase-inverts ambient noise so as to cancel it out seems suitably futuristic. Basically, more advanced and less obnoxious-looking Google Glass combined with mirror shades.
