It would feel like me communicating through a land line. Dated. Seriously dated. This is supposed to be a projection of our tech level in the future. It would really break immersion if we have smart phones. Especially since most open world games already use the smart phone as a mechanic.

So invent something that has no practical reason to exist just so the game feels futuristic?

I was definitely thinking "watch" like Slim, though some badass shades might be a bit more practical since they'd already be near your ear. As for the mic, something omnidirectional that recognizes the human voice and phase-inverts ambient noise so as to cancel it out seems suitably futuristic.

That could work.
Glasses would also give you the option to incorporate "Times Square" easily. And if not fully 3D at lest the current move/video game version of it into images you'd view.
And it's real pleasure to meet someone else here that understands the capabilities and LIMITS of technology and ergonomics!

What happened to style over substance...you can't tell me that doesn't already play a huge role in our tech.

Sure it does, but only a segment of the population bases their sense of accomplishment and self-worth on their possessions.
You forget that much, if not most of the population in CP2020 (and presumably 2077) live at the edge of the poverty line. They just plain can't afford style over substance so that in and of itself will dictate much of what common, day-to-day tech is and how it functions.

Hmm. DINKs were like the paired-yuppie. Double-Income No Kids, for those of you who don't know. I consider them an annoyance upgrade over a single Yuppie.

Still, I did enjoy Michael J Fox in The Secret to My Success. So there's that.

Umm. Dink here. You have offended me. The sentence is to listen to 20 hours of British New Wave music. Non-stop. I get to pick the tracks.
I loved the '80s. I loved the shoulder pads and the big hair, the music (British, anyway).

Oh, and smartwatches are already here.
I think it should be direct implants by 2077.

In 2020 there are ear implant for sound-level editing and all, linking it to a cyberoptic and using the canal from ear to mouth as "inner phone" isn't a far stretch. Mostly when there are chirurgy way worse than this in 2020
Like in GITS where they all look stupid talking to themselves.
"Are you crazy?"
"Shhhh I'm on the phone"

I figure the poors would stay with crappy phone or something closer.
Also, in the 4th corporate war it's told that Arasaka's gone all "NSA" over everyone, hacking everything they could from the cyberspace, so probably land line phone would be back for sensitive corporate or governmental agency, like Germany's back on typewritter.
In my country they're planning to put wireless phone scrambler in prison so inmates can't use the one they manage to get in, and rely on landline.
Proof that tech can go forward and then backward when it needs to, and after the mess from the 4th corporate war, I think they'll be really really really paranoid about all of this.

I think smartphones should be a retro option by 2077 and they should be BIG AS BOOKS.

So. Which tracks, dinky? Huh? I CAN TAKE IT.

Exactly, but the censors didn't and that's the point.

We-elll..they have mentioned aiming squarely at the 80s vibe.

I think that's a good decision, both thematically and in order to set the game apart from just another "future shooter".

problem is that their trailer looked nothing like the 80s and resembled mass effect.

You don't have to carry anything. You can never lose your connection. It's more immediate and convenient. It's also in line with the idea of augmentation found in the 2020 lore. And carrying a phone around 70 years from now might seem silly.

No, I don't think censorship had much to do with it, Flynn was classier than that, at least on screen, while wearing his pants.

We have a winner here...

The criminal element, it keeps things COOL....

Sure, cell phone implants, and they actually already exist in CP 2020, just to get on with the topic, make things convenient, especially when tied to a mastoid comm, voc vox, cyberaudio and times square option...

But cell phones will still be around, because people don't want to be tapped... even if that just means easily disposable "cell phone" adapter for your neural processor.

Style Over Substance, BAH.

BAH I SAY.

Break that rule, thank you I will.

Substance first, style second, unless you like dying. Or are a Rocker, I suppose.

I guess you would have smart phones, Netrunners have various neural implants but usually you would have a deck on the outside - unless you go for a sub dermal mobile deck that's fully hard wired - i.e. your a corp programmer or a weefle runner with money (and a nervous system) to burn.

My interest would be how those smart phones would have evolved - and how a 3d realised internet is projected through them, etc.

And certainly most players that at a minimum skirt either the law or the ire of corporations, will want to be able to ditch them at a moments notice if necessary

Smartphones will continue to evolve the same way they have evolved.
Smaller, lighter, greater battery life, more and more capabilities as time passes.
These days they are usually internet capable, have audio/video recording capability and act as music players. I've seen some that incorporate movie playback (don't believe I've seen one capable of pulling TV off the air yet tho).
Basically anything that involves BASIC (as opposed to advanced sound recording/mixing or full scale hacking) communications, playback, and recording in one convenient package.
