Win 7 keeps renistalling updates

Whenever I install updates, my PC reboots, only to tell me I need to install updates again. This has been going on for months now. Any other win 7 users experiencing this?

Ok, I know this isn't a tech forum but I thought I'd bring it up in case anyone else was going through this. Pooling solutions can help. I'll just say that for me it's the dreaded. NET4 updates that are giving me issues. Here's a MS thread which confirms people are having a tough time finding a single solution. Ima go blow shit up in a vidya games now cause this makes me angry.

Haven't even look up solutions. I've just kind of rolled with it and ignored it mostly. :p

Just turn off auto update, what's the problem?

From the description of the problem, it's set the registry flags that say it's half way through an update (the one that makes it finish off when you reboot) but isn't setting the registry flags that say it's finished.

If so, there's a way of fixing it by tweaking the registry, but I'm going to leave it for one of the experts to say what it is. (As I only have a little knowledge, and that's a dangerous thing when it's someone else's PC).

Microsoft has been less than helpful about it, and that's putting it politely.

I use the "install updates automatically" setting, and it has not repeated for me.

Others have been successful by changing their Windows Update setting to "download updates but let me choose".

I don't know if it might help, but I regularly clean the registry with CCleaner, and this way it also removes the obsolete update keys. I do this weekly. And I've set to "download updates but let me choose"

Mine's set to "Tell me but do nothing". I'm the only one who gets to decide when it starts to consume bandwidth by downloading, and it pissed me off a couple of times when MS decided to include graphics driver updates in the "Important" category, so it doesn't get to do anything until I check. I didn't get the problem.

I let windows update download updates at a specific time but I choose when to install them . I did have issues with windows update back when I had XP and some updates would NOT install normally . But Safe Mode with networking solved that issue . So that might be an option to try . You can always try running command prompt as administrator and type sfc /scannow in the dialog box to ensure that your system files haven`t been corrupted in any way .

Thanks for the tips guys. Obviously, the real issue would be corrupted files or updates not installing properly, but I decided to do something after I bought the latest Amnesia game and it crashed at start up. I visited the forums and other people are experiencing the same error message. At any rate, it's definitely on my end as I could play Dark Descent without issue earlier this year. I'll try some of the suggestions and see if I can root out the problem. Or at the very least have drivers and such updated properly.

I had that same problem as well for about a year even. I went and clicked on 'repair' on the .net framework 4 client profile. I doubted it would work but apparantly it did.

It's for this reason that I turned auto updates off. There was one round of updates that destroyed my computer: any application that isn't registered with Microsoft can't operate. It's so bad even IE (EFFING IE!!!!) can't start. For a while I was nervous since System Restore didn't seem to do anything. Two days later, System Restore managed to stick. I promptly made a restore point, backed up my files (especially my Witcher saves), ran CCleaner, then Defraggler, THEN turned off Auto Updates. No problems since.

I traced the problem to a bad update because after all those, I tried updating, again, and the problem reared its ugly head again. I didn't bother to look into what update exactly. That ordeal was enough for me to turn updates off permanently, and will probably do so in all PC's I will end up owning.

hah, that's why i am keeping stable version of my system and installing updates manually only if i know what they are changing and if it is necessary.

Have win7 on the laptop and of course using manual updates as anything else is Russian Roulette. Still, I've installed most of the socalled essential updates and not had any problems with reboots and such.
