Just wanted to add my voice to the chorus of bummed gamers. I had been getting the thing where it tries to reinstall .NET everytime I launch the game, but had figured out how to get around that. Now I'm not able to play the game at all because of this problem. I'm on Win7 x64, running through Steam and using Steam cloud for saves. I tried going offline, and if I do that it tries to install .NET and then the Launcher doesn't appear at all. Running Witcher2.exe directly doesn't work, nor does running it in Admin mode, neither does launching Steam in Admin mode.

So I guess it's back to AC2 for now.

I'm having the same problem. I was in the middle of playing about 2 hours ago, and suddenly the game crashed as I exited the dungeons in the prologue quest. When I went to relaunch the game it tried to sync with Steam and failed. I closed and re-opened Steam, and tried again...

Each time I try to launch the game I get some Microsoft VC redist package trying to download, and then a windows alert saying "The Witcher 2 Launcher Application has stopped working".

I saw the temporary fix suggested to run Steam in offline mode, and disconnect my internet... My concern is: Will I still get achievements and stuff if I play the game like that? I mean, just before the game crashed I got the Strong Back achievement... I suspect that data will be lost since that's where the crash happened, so I'd be loading a game from a bit before that. I don't want to play if it means not getting the achievement. Anyone know for certain what the deal is with that?

Thanks.

I am having the same problem...if CDP isn't going to at least FIX this problem in a timely fashion could they at least ACKNOWLEDGE that the problem exists.

FIX IT!

ok so i found a workaround somewhat. Start the game like how all the other people are saying /bin>witcher.exe. Usually u wont have ur save files, so go to Steam>userdata> 20920> then copy the remote folder and put it in your Documents>Witcher2>Gamesaves. Then you will have your save files. Unfortunately, you wont get any achievements on steam and shit like that. I want to play it on steam though sigh.

Steam User here, I also have this problem. I just started chapter 3, was very disappointed to not be able to continue.

Also, I played this morning around 11-12:30pm eastern, and it was working fine. Got back from work, and I got an error and wouldn't launch.

Don't think so, I'm just going to wait. I recently started BattleStar Galatica, figured I get back to that. On a similar note, the Witcher 2 the best game I've played this year. I would really like to get back to it.

Has any staff admitted that there is an issue and they are looking into it?

I haven't tried the workaround to set Steam to Offline mode and disconnect my internet then launch TW2 because... I don't want to miss out on Steam achievements : P

Why is this game broken?

And has anyone replied to all of us yet to at least say something like: We are aware of the issue and working at getting a fix for you all... ?

Guys, for those of you who have it on Steam, I have a solution.

0. Put Steam in offline mode.
1. Disconnect your network adapters. (Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections)
2. Play the game. It will work.

Until CDPRed fixes it, we can use this.

EDIT: This should also work for those of you who bought it via GoG. Just follow steps 1 & 2, skip 0.

Might try this if they don't fix this by tomorrow afternoon. I really don't care all that much for achievements.

Question! If I run The Witcher 2 with Steam in Offline, and my internet disabled: When this gets fixed and I reconnect to Steam, will Steam find and recognize any achievements I completed while it was Offline, and give me those achievements retroactively?

I wish the staff would at least acknowledge this...

Ok, it's kind of late to tell this, but after disabling my router I could start TW2. So you need to be either offline or block the communication of TW2 (haven't tried that one with steam set to online) to be able to start.
Going to check out after work if it works to block TW2 communication + steam set to online if problem persists.(so i'd check this one out if i'd be one of "steam cloud saves users")

gl and cya witchers.
