Witcher 2 unplayable

So i have the retail version for The Witcher 2 EE with the lastest patch 3.1, but i can't play the game properly because the game have lag, and a unstable FPS between 25-60 fps on these settings:

i tried play with everything on low and on lower resolution but THE results are practically the same, i reinstalled the game but still the same.

Some pics of the game running on LOW settings and 1280x720:

My system specs are above recommend:
CPU: AMD Phenom ll X4 965 BE
Graphic Card: Radeon HD6870 1GB
4GB RAM DDR3
Win 7 x64
And i have the lastest drive Catalyst 12.4

shouldn't my system run the game smooth on at least medium or high settings? Why the game don't run properly on even minimum settings?

That is strange, I'm no pc expert so I'll refrain from sounding like I know what I'm talking about. But I found this site very helpful in tweaking my system: http://www.geforce.com/Optimize/Guides/witcher-2-tweak-guide/#1

Its a NVIDIA site but the information applies to any set up.

Did amd fix the 12.4 drivers . they were having trouble with even though the 12.4 drivers were installed it was still reading 12.3 . Unless you are experiencing screen tearing you can disable AA and Vsync . Also make an exception in your antivirus for Witcher 2 just in case real time scanning is affecting your performance . Running a defrag might also help .

The game is already defragged, the antivirus always is in game mode when i'm playing and without vsync and AA nothing changes except the screen tearing and the ugly graphics, but the lag still the same. you're saying that the cause is the AMD driver, that means that i have to wait for a new driver?

Also noticed that in arena mode the game runs smooth 60fps constantly, but in story mode is unplayable!
Looks like i'm just putting this game aside, besides Max Payne 3 is coming June 1 for PC

You could probably get better framerates by disabling Vsync and antialiasing unless you experience screen tearing .

But how is 40 - 60 FPS unplayable ?

This game is Worse than GTA IV, really poorly optimized, how can it be?With all settings off even Vsync the game still lags, It's really a shame!

Might help some if you describe as to what your perception of lag is . Also have you made an exception in your antivirus to ensure that real time scanning isn`t a factor . I wasn`t talking about game defragging as much as the entire hard drive being defragged . Is anything running in the background that would be accessing the hard drive , something like the indexing service .

Try and install Official AMD CCC 12.6 beta drivers (it's like WHQL one really, but without M$ certificate)

Too true, It is only considered unplayable when it is extremely laggy and below 15 fps.

The witcher 2 is demanding game let the configurator choose the best settings. Open your configurator and choose "Auto detect best settings" that should do it and also remember Fps recorders might reduce your performance.

All the best.

Hi all,

Finally got a copy. Loved the first one, will have to play it again to get my saves in.. anyway, I digress.

Im experiencing some lag myself. I have played around a bit with settings, with no change at all. I'm not savy on tech stuff, so I came here looking to see if others have similar (I'll try be as detailed as possible bellow, bear with me if yo u can ) The sum of it all, low frame rate 5-20 fps, at a guess, and long delay between mouse movement and action). Autodetect settings believes I can run the game on high settings. So tried that to start. I have tried custom settings reducing certain options and on minimum settings, still using high resolution (1920x1080)I see no real difference at all. Running in full Admin for the game.

Starting the tutorial, frame rate is very poor, maybe 10 fps if that. The Help screen pops up and my mouse has a good 1 second lag on movement and is very jerky. Tab through the first two pop ups. Im standing on the dock, try and look around, and it take s a moment for my mouse movement to translate to action. when it does move, it seems to move well, blur looks great and DOF. Smooth movement, but great lag between mouse movement and action. When idle, the frame rate seems poor again, hair moves jerkily and mouth movement well out of sink and slow to voice over (complaint about wet boots). I run to the first body, the lag leaves me zig zagging my way up the dock, all actions have a long delay (half a second or more, but fairly consistent)

I manage to pick up the objects with some struggle to bring the cursor to the right button, and enter the Inventory. Everything runs smooth here.

Walking further down the path, trees move smoothly (and everything looks pretty spectacular) but I still have great lag. Struggle to make it to the arena. Cut scenes are very slow sub 10FPS.

The arena is quite slow (again somewhere between 5-20fps, all this at a guess, I have not seen any option for seeing Frame rate yet EDIT: top right corner of screen huh... oops ), and near impossible to play with the lag between moving the mouse and my actions on screen. Just finding a target is a struggle Geralt facing left and right of the enemies to target. I've managed to fudge my way through to lvl up (Inventory and journal and character screens run smooth, no mouse delay - thinking incase mouse driver or other issue, just purchased new mouse. After level up, the final 3 waves... I exited the tutorial.

As stated, I have tried changing settings (other than screen res - which I will try now after reading some other forums here), and noticed no difference.

I noticed a thread on ATI users experiencing lag, so Im trying the ATI Tray tool. I'll report back after trying.

Thanks for your patience.

Overly eager player ;-)

Fairly cheap machine

Quad core

4gigs ram

ATI HD6450

Tried the ATI Tray tool, using suggested settings

Reduced res

turned off most functions

Game now runs, still slow, about 20fps (I must have had less than that previously, which seems about right)

Mouse to action lag has improved greatly, still minor, but most playable..

Here we go!

Any other tips on performance would be greatly appreciated, be real nice to see some of the cool effects.

yeah yeah, buy better machine, and maybe not one from ALDI ;)

It`s your card that`s causing the issue . The minimum recommended is the 3850 and yours is short of that . I`ll explain , first forget the 1st digit that is strictly the generation number , the next 3 digits are what is important . Minimum is 850 and yours is 450 . There is something that you can try to reduce the lag a bit . Try at 1280 x 720 screen resolution to see if the lag is better .

Decrease your Shadow quality to Low. From what I know it's one of the most demanding settings and it decreases the framerate by a lot.

played ok for small fights, as soon as theres a bit happening frame rate dropped quite a bit. So turned everything off (low for shadows), cut down all processes. Ran ok till the Kayran, then had to drop it to min res and that got frame rate up to about 50.

Time to get an upgrade,... be here soon

Thanks for all the tips folks.
