CDPR has been outspoken against DRM before and they should not encourage people to buy a DRM'ed version of their game. At least that's what I think.

Do you have any ideas how many customers they'd lose if they only offer the game on GOG and discs? I'd bet hundreds of thousands if not millions. I have no doubt that Steam will generate more sales than GOG will even if GOG version is DRM-free and has extra goodies. Boatloads of people don't even know about GOG, vast majority of PC gamers know about Steam. Most also don't care about the DRM piece. Sure, here on CDPR forums most of us know about GOG but we're the exception, not the rule.

To everyone that bashes Steam, I know you hate DRM but you guys are really ignoring the benefit that Steam generates for the developers. I can't count how many times I saw a game I've never heard of go on a deep sale on Steam and went "what's this thing about?", researched it and bought it. Oh well, I love CDPR and I love Valve and it pains me to see either one bashed =)

They basically said that they want the most little amount of DRM possible, but the priority is still about providing the game to as many people as possible. The game will be sold on Steam.

Sigh... Read my post again. I was very clear, but I'll rephrase it for you.

CDPR does not like DRM. They also have a distribution channel for DRM free games, through GOG.com. Since TW3 will be available without DRM from GOG, it makes sense for CDPR to recommend THIS version. It does not make sense to give away a free copy from GOG when you decide to buy from other distributors, like Steam. This is because Steam is DRM and by giving you a free backup they are encouraging its use.

Of course the game will be on Steam and of course many people will buy it there. I never said otherwise. This entire thread is about a GOG backup.

Point is that Steam is one of the most popular digital platform, many people love it and find it user friendly, gamer friendly, cheap and affordable, trustable and so on. Me included.
It doesn't meant that I don't like GOG, it simply means that every user has the right to choose the distributor they want. It's unrecommendable that they only force customers to buy from what they want, like they did with Mass Effect 3 for example. I'd rather to have it on steam as well, as I have ME2, but they're forcing to me to buy from Origin or box edition, which is a thing that I don't like and I don't understand.
I would be extremely disappointed if CDP did the same, forcing me to buy from GOG for... whatever reason. Just give the customer the freedom to decide. This DRM fight all belong to a certain part of gamers, not everyone are in this fight.

Right so let's stick to the topic about GOG backup, without turning it into Steam vs. GOG thread.

Also, don't forget that GOG is now in position to start competing with Steam hard and it's aiming to seriously grow. It's in the direct interest of CDPR to promote GOG even more, rather than promote their primary competitor.

So CDPR have a bit conflicting interests here. Steam might give them more sales, however promoting GOG more gives GOG a boost.

You are endorsing evil for using Steam even though you realize that CDPR gets a bigger share of the purchase price from GOG.com :)/>

In all honesty - I hope they don't do the free GOG backup thing. They're not a charity. Though what the hell do I know, maybe their models show that it's actually profitable, in that case, I have nothing against it.

*yawn*

They get a bigger share from me buying two copies too. Steam is my preference. I get everyone here think's they are special for using GOG but so what.

They're probably going to include physical goodies in the retail version, which might include DRM depending on what the publisher demands, and actually provides the least revenue to CDPR compared to the digital options. This is definitely encouraging people (or at least me :p) to buy retail just because the physical goodies are so awesome :D

I do agree it would probably diminish sales on GOG if they offer free GOG copies again. In my opinion they should not offer GOG backup copies at first. If someone wants the physical goodies from the retail version or the additional Steam features then that's the choice we make. But if/when they release a big patch like the Enhanced Edition awhile after release, then it might be good to offer the GOG backup copy in case people are having technical issues patching the other versions.

I think that's what they did with Witcher 2 because I remember redeeming my GOG copy at about the time that the Enhanced Edition came out and I was having trouble patching the retail version so I ended up uninstalling it and just downloading the fully-patched game from GOG instead.

Oh man, I forgot about the physical goodies. The stuff for TW2 was absolutely superb. Decisions, decisions.

My decision will probably be based on availability - whether or not they have the game at release in the one local retail shop that has legal software, whether or not I have an internet connection that's better than 1GB/day. Hopefully, I'll have both sorted out and an actual choice :)

Just open preorders for a Collector's Edition CDPR and I'll buy one and make it a beefy CE.
