Witcher 3 Graphics

Hey everyone, first post for me here don't know why I took so long because Witcher 2 is my favourite game.

I'm sure most people have seen the "NVidia fur" demonstration for wolves to be used in Witcher 3. But in the trailer for Witcher 3 (The scene where Geralt rides along a stone bridge to a couple of guards who stop him) the fur that the guards are wearing is 2D and low res. It really stands out as a blemish against all the amazing graphics. Same as how the hair/beards were rendered in Witcher 2, just a bad mark on a beautiful game when compared to the textures.

Does anyone know if the stuff shown in trailer is final models/graphics?

Will the "fur" tech be used for clothing and hair in Witcher 3? I feel like these details are what keep Witcher from looking like cgi movie quality

Seeing as the game is still an alpha and halfway there at that, I would assume that many textures are subject to change. I would not worry in the slightest, seeing the quality they are aiming for.

I actually hold conflicting views on this issue.

On one hand, we've been shown pre-alpha footage which normally would bode well for improved graphical fidelity in the final game. On the other, we have John Mamais on camera saying them graphics are close to final.

Go figure.

I don't see a problem here personally.

Then again, I care more about the gameplay, story and lore than I do about the graphics. Personal preferences, I suppose.

But to your point. There'd had to be either a very strong wind or you'd have to be running like Usain Bolt to get the fur moving like it does on the wolves. But maybe they can add like a light tickle of movement in the fur, would be neat. But in my opinion, far less necessary.

I'm... fairly sure (while not 100% certain) that those advanced effects weren't implemented in the gameplay trailer.

Even the fur of those wolves isn't anywhere as smooth and fluffy as in that Nvida leaked video.

I definitely agree about graphics not being number one priority. Story and gameplay are infinitely more important, overall experience.

I guess a way of putting it is that things that stand out like that take you out of the experience, same as when a visual glitch occurs. I'm nor saying the fur that is worn has to move like that, but to be of the same quality look. However, this may be part of the trade off of amazing textures in Witcher 2 (by comparison when seeing FF 13 in action, FF13 has sacrificed textures for hair quality) If someone can nail both would complete the look they are going for.

The guy from Nvidia who gave the presentation about the new graphics tech that will be used in The Witcher 3 actually said that the awesome fur tech that we've seen showcased by these wolfs WILL be used for the clothing as well:

(he says it starting from 0:35).
So I assume that the guards still had the placeholder fur clothing, which will be replaced by the realistic fur in the final game.

Ok, let's say this before it gets out of hand...
Guys, that's nice to hear and all, but this thread is *specifically* about graphics, so if you don't care about them at all, I'm not sure why you feel the urge to state it here.

Just to ward off the trolls and high horse people who will ignore the issue and say "If you only care about graphics then you . :) I think we can all agree that Witcher series is a quality product, but we can always ask for more! :)

Welcome to the internet

anyway,

YES !!! the fur clothing looked like stiff wires and it was such a letdown compared to everything else in the reveal

I can only hope that Nvidia's furry tech will be used in the final game, but we can only hope for now...

another thing I find disconcerting are the localized shadows, because I watched a skyrim shadow mod showing how vanilla skyrim shadows are lackluster compared to the ones with lighting mods...

and i see the same lack of localized shadows during geralt's meeting with the gate keepers... everything is just too bright...

But of course, the burning village set piece is the most obvious counterpoint

So yeah... more powers to the furries

I'm sure it'll be improved - despite Mamais' ambiguous statement - even if NVidia's tech won't make it to the final game.

That furry garment looked conspicuously out of place, like heritage from the DX9 distant past. Your attention is drawn to it when it really shouldn't be.

I think it'll be implemented later. the trailer we saw was rendered by the RED engine 2.

If you mean the old renderer, then no, it was not. It's been explicitly stated we're looking at the new renderer, maybe not in its final form, but still the new DX11 renderer.

From what I understand the game is about 30% done and they have not even began optimization. I am pretty sure such effects will come with the optimization stage making sure everything is as good as can be then between appearance and technological compatibility.

Uhm, no it wasn't.
Maybe it wasn't a "feature complete" version but it was already stated more than once that the gameplay trailer was filmed with the new engine, using the "new renderer".

Im pretty sure the graphics, along with that fur in clothes, are not near final quality.

No matter what Mamais said, i think he was referring to graphics in general, major changes, but not to finished light sources, textures and more.

We're still more than a year away from release so I take his words to mean nothing structural will change. Fur needs to be improved, that's a given.

I think they haven't implemented the NVIDIA tech yet, the wolves looked exactly like they looked around 12 seconds in: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JMGPKlpaIxI

No they do not, it is clearly visible that the wolves' fur in the trailer is utilizing Nvidea's tech but to a lesser degree.
