Witcher 3 Graphics

CDPR spent quite a lot of time optimizing and tweaking TW3 to run this well on PS4 and Xbone. If they spent equal time on the 2013 spec version I'm sure it wouldn't need as big as a machine as you think it would. However, it would still need a top of the line rig to run. My last PC was built specifically for the Witcher 2, and I was going to build another for this game (and future games obviously) as well. Very disappointing considering what we were promised...

Optimisation can only go so far. 2013 is impressive as hell, an almost cinematic experience. No way. You'd need 2 980's alone for 1080p in Ultra.

I add myself to the complainers. The Graphics overall are a big letdown, and not worth my gtx970 to which i recently upgraded. It's not our fault they advertised the game with stellar graphics, knowing (or not, doesn't matter) that the final game won't even be similar. What bothers the most is, that even the witcher 2 looks more crisp and alive then w3 on ultra. Particularly the Foliage is just a disgrace. I would not be so harsh in this criticism if it wasn't for the massive hype which was built around the supposedly great graphics.

there will be enhacement graphics patch in the future ?

yeah if you search my posts i have a low end machine but right know as graphics are for me its not worth to upgrade my rig just for better framerate and slightly level of detail (yeah ive seen ultra footage in front of me on my friends pc and comparing to sod trailer side by side , lets be real there is a downgrade )

so devs are gonna release the old effects

like the advance lightining
tesselated walls (because ive see non in ultra footage )
the better draw distance wee see in sod trailer

Aren't they gonna patch it later with Ultra+ or ubersampling? Don't quote me on this but I thought I heard about this..

First they should optimise hairworks.. in FC4 it didnt have a perofmrance impact, in this game i drop from 70 to 30 fps when switching it on. on a gtx 980.

I still don't get it.
First of, if you cant see the difference from the 2013 trailer from the game now. Get glasses or don't read my reply.
Now my question is why is it downgraded when its already there???
Is it because they polished that specific trailer or?

Well...its taste i quess.

2013

2015

Thats very disingenuous man. You know as well as I that the bottom pic is from the PS4. If you want to see what it looks like on PC, here's a much better pic although I can tell it has the blur option enabled.. Not one I took, because I haven't reached Novigrad yet obviously.. When I do, I'll take my own pics:

I said this earlier but here is the answer to your question.

CDPR made a large portion of the game when they only had a basic idea of what the next gen consoles (PS4, Xbone) were capable of in terms of graphic fidelity and hardware; this is around the time they released the SoD trailer. Afterwards, they got their hands on the next gen consoles and realized that it was not possible to play that version of the game with the PS4 and Xbone- so they had two options: finish the PC version, or start from [essentially] scratch, and rebuild a version of the game that would be playable on current gen console hardware. They elected to make the latter, as finishing the partially completed SoD PC version, and then going back and changing all the textures, engine, etc. for the consoles would take more time/ resources than they wanted to spend. This is why they did such a thing.

All of this is understandable, from a business standpoint, though people are displeased because they chose consoles over PC, and essentially 'sold out' because there is generally considered to be more money in consoles. I'm not entirely sure why Marcin and the other devs lied about it repeatedly, I presume because they didn't want people to cancel their preorders- mission succeeded I guess, the game sold more than 1.5million copies before it even launched.

The whole dishonesty thing really rubs me the wrong way; I used to think of CDPR as the good guys- a company that didn't use DRM and were gamers themselves, a company that didn't practice 'big business' and shitty business practices for maximum monetary gain, regardless of the impact on the final product and existing fan-base. Oh well, money gets to everyone I suppose.

I've got to agree. Picked a GTX 970 for this, and for what? It looks really nice, don't get me wrong but what on earth happened between now and the 2013 reveal? That was simply jaw-dropping. I mean, genuinely had a "next-gen" feel to the atmosphere. I mean, look...

What...? I don't CARE if re-creating that would took multiple GPUs in SLI - The fact that it COULD be done is incredible. I mean, they were doing it at some point, right? What happened. WHAT happened. Incredibly saddened by this giant leap backwards in visual fidelity. CDPR cannot afford to become complacent regarding this, I feel. Maybe they can... Pity. This will sound childish of me, but if the visual's EPIC potential was scaled back because of consoles, I simply refuse to buy the DLC for this game, and any other CDPR title henceforth. I cannot support that type of behavior, and the ONLY thing that gets the message across, the ONLY thing that gives us a voice is our dollar. It speaks volume. I know my opting out will not hurt CDPRs bottom line, but it's all I can do.

I know this isn't supposed to be a glorified tech demo - We want a GREAT RPG, THAT comes first, but holy smokes, what a dissapointing difference. Ultra was supposed to smack us across the head? Are you kidding? It looks marginally better than Crysis did in 2007. The hyper realistic visuals are what got me SO excited for this.

You guys were supposed to be better than this type of behavior. Look at what we lost in the .gif below... *sigh* Sad panda indeed, guys. I've been duped!

I definitely get both sides of the argument here. I think budget has to be taken into consideration on this. Take GTA 5 for example (budget $265 million). Wither 3 is estimated to be around $40 million. I think Witcher 3 graphics are close to but slightly below the PC version, released last month, of GTA 5. Witcher 3 is larger, more dialog, more content, and superior in many ways. CD Projekt could create 6 Witcher 3's for the cost of 1 GTA 5. Anyway, I think this does say something about the amount of work and skill that went into Witcher 3. The graphics leave something to be desired sometimes (especially draw distance/fog) but I do really enjoy the visuals. The style changed a lot from Witcher 2 Enhanced to Witcher 3. I wish the foliage and trees looked a little more lifelike instead of like a painting, but the artsy look has its appeal too. I have a feeling the graphics will just get better with time.

I think this whole discussion needs to go away so we can enjoy the game. Without console versions this game would never be made. CDPR should be proud and have nothing to apologize for in making this fantastic game.

The whole thing is sad from the direction they took graphically aka atmospherically to no 3dvision support. Heck I'd just play it on ps4 but from what I've heard it runs like crap on consoles. So the whole direction change was pointless. Just pray that modders are able to restore that dark world atmosphere. That's the thing I miss most is that dark depressing war ravaged atmosphere. Guess I'll look into sweetfx for this one.

I'm not so sure. The Witcher 1 and 2 existed without consoles. I think CDPR definately have something to apologize for, regardless of whether or not the game is fantastic. They don't need to apologize for the downgrade, or for wanting to make more money, but they should apologize for deliberately misleading people into pre-ordering a different game then the one they got. The earlier gameplay and trailers were labeled as "in-game footage and gameplay". The devs also repeatedly lied about there being no downgrade, and said that you could replicate every scene in the SoD trailer with the full release, which is obviously not true.

I demand really a PC graphic update for this as well. I hate with all my heart dumbed down games because of console development. It really piss me off.
I understand the business decision and I am not upset by it, business is business... but at least I expected a better graphical version for PC version.

Next time no pre-order even from CD Project...

EVERYONE loves this game. everyone buys it. it get;s amazing reviews. so who do you think is right? the whole world or just you?

things are missing.

Will they be back?

CDPR PR was not handled in the best way. But when a product gets to a certain size I bet there are some tried and tested ways to handle media that have measurable impacts on sales.
The lack of horsepower in ps4/xbone probably caused a crisis at CDPR. They probably had the vision of consoles being beautiful with dx11 shaders and PCs using even higher textures and amplified tessellation. i guess consoles used most of there spunk on the volume of next gen world geometry and had nothing left for the really nice things.
It puts them in a difficult position. I;d like to think they WANT to make the PC version sexy but how do they market it without devaluing their current offering. Quietly patch the PC only version in a year or so? How big and comprehensive was that Witcher2 HD pack? then the combat rebalance. ..
