I'll also take this opportunity to remark that modern machinery and tools significantly simplify and expedite the forging of consistently high-quality blades. This is not to undermine the skills of present-day sword-smiths -- on the contrary -- but to remind people that, in the Mediaeval Ages, due to the limitations of older equipment, and the various skills of the smiths, true master-crafted swords were highly prized, and their manufacture, frequently, a closely-guarded secret. The process was rather laborious and lengthy, and, as a result, the price of an excellent steel could be quite steep.
