Witcher...Gothic.....Both Fantastic

I'm a real Gothic 1 & 2 fan. If you're playing The Witcher and haven't played Gothic 1&2 then you owe it to yourself to buy them off Ebay and play them.Hours of RPG greatness.But...I enjoyed Morrowind AND Oblivion (it seems to be a badge of shame to admit this...but I don't care!).......and I'm 3 hours into The Witcher and I'm thinking its the best thing I've ever played! If you like The Witcher, PLEASE play Gothic. Its not the same but they are the most underated, best in their genre games ever. Gothic Fans...please back me up!! ;D

I've never played any of the Gothic series, but I've seen it mentioned in a good light many times. It seems Gothic 3 gets a lot of bad reviews, but 1 and 2 seem highly regarded for the most part.

If you are the Gothic fan it's good for you... because in reality Gothic series is just visually fancy RPG with very poor plot and role playing component. It has a plot of the modern first person shooter, unfortunately. I would recommend playing only original Gothic and only chapter 1. Starting from the chapter 1, which was actually great, the Gothic plot went downhill and ended up in the plain boring mediocrity. Gothic 2 was so-so, Gothic 3 was even worse. The only reason the Gothic had success it appeared during the downfall of the CRPG development in general and had no real competition in its the class.

Gothic 1 and 2 were good games with a very unique world (dinos ftw) but part 3 was really horrible.

I liked Gothic 1 and Gothic 2 (along with Night of the Raven expansion) very much. The stories in this game aren't top notch, perhaps, (with the exception of the said expansion, which i found rather nice story-wise),but the amount of things to do,quests and general atmosphere and gameplay make those games a very pleasurable experience.Third one,i never finished, sadly.Too many bugs, too little optimilization and almost no story, what so ever (can't really call one main quest through the entire game a "story").A huge dissapointment.

Ditto the above. My first...and last...exposure to the Gothic series was 3. There may have been some great elements, but it was so bug-ridden, I couldn't get past it all. I finally tossed my hands up, deleted the game and never looked backwards. I knew I was in for an interesting time when I got a quest from a blacksmith in the rebel camp, went into the main building, and then see the message, "Quest failed..." I'm thinking, "WTF?" Go outside and some mob had wandered in and killed the quest giver. Okay, points for originality, but points taken away for logic and pathing. ;D

Yeh was unfortunate gothic 3 sucked so much.. They're making a 4th though, hoping it will turn out as 3 should have.

I hope they get it right this time. There were actually elements I liked about the game. I just couldn't handle the bugs and the CTD. However, I won't buy it until I see some reviews I trust. ;D

I recently played both Gothic 1 & 2 and it was a nice experience. They're not RPGs through and through (much like The Witcher), and at times you get the feeling the games are incomplete and should have had more features, quests, and dialogue; but they're undoubtedly good at what they do: providing a big, atmospheric world to explore with many challenges of varying difficulty (albeit generic) awaiting in the wilderness. Not unlike the two latest installments of the Elder Scrolls series. That said, they're definitely worth a check, since they've got a particular style of their own.

I've never ever heard of Gothic until G3 was announced. Played it, loved it, way better than Oblivion and Witcher in many areas. Basically Gothic 3, Baldurs Gate 2 and Witcher, all 3 have good and bad points and features I wish were in one or another.

Actually, that's a fantastic idea. It's even better when you can totally screw up the main quest, and only find out about it later. ;D Of course, for a game that has a fixed destiny as part of the plot, such as The Witcher here, that might not work so well. But for a game that allows you total freedom, it is a good idea to allow the player plenty of rope to hang himself with, or allow others to interfere with your quests. It makes things more real when you or others can get you in some real trouble.Of course, simple scripting wouldn't be good enough if you take this to extremes, every character would need an AI systems with motivations, so that they know what to do when the plan changes. Suppose, for example, you break into the Order headquarters in Act 2 (actually, the Act system would also need to go in that case) and stab de Aldersberg in his sleep. Then you could have a fight for the leadership of the Order. Or hey, why not decapitate Alvin and see what happens? ]:->Of course, with current simple character AI, the whole game would degenerate into a stupid sandbox with nothing but monster killing and courier quests.

Problem is,when the game can screw the main quest for You,without Your hand in it,and without any way of going around it when it happens. My adventure with Gothic 3 ended when a boar killed a 3 ppl camp with a NPC that i needed to talk to if i wanted to follow the quest of freeing the city from orcs. There was no other npc i could have finished the quest with,no any other way.The city was finished because one completely overpowered boar happened to wander near the camp with one of it's rebelion leaders.Go figure.

"gothic 4" wil not be of the gothic series. but it wil not turn out as gothic 3 eather they want a map around the size of the map in the first gothic series and work on it to get a game with the same feeling we had when playing gothic 1. thats the main reason they ditched jowood so they could use as much time as they want on this new title ^^ so i think it wil be realy good.

Gothic 3 is not as bad as they tried to make it with their reviews.I guess the main reason is, because it requires some "intelligence" to use the GUI and maneuver the character around. And yes, there was that bug with the killer boars *shrug* I simply used my bow and killed them from afar. Such bugs are really easy to work around... plus such bugs add a challenge to the game. But that is my opinion.I dunno what it is like in English, since it's a game made by germans and one of the few with a very excellent German voice over. No holding back, no baby speech, a nice grown up fantasy game. The only thing that annoyed me was that there were so few women... made me wonder how they reproduced... like a Zeugle perhaps ? :D

The first two Gothic games WERE THE ABSOLUTE BEST ACTION RPGS EVER CREATED. The first Gothic was also incredibly groundbreaking. In fact, it's the greatness of those Gothic games that really keeps me from loving the Witcher, as good a game overall as it is. Here are some of the ways that Gothic is just absolutely superior as far as its game design and dedication to total immersion for the player:1. You cannot simply walk into any house and rob everyone blind, which is R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S in Witcher and detracts INCREDIBLY from the experience. In fact, forget about stealing - in Gothic, you can't even WALK INTO a stranger's house without being threatened, which is much more realistic than The Witcher, where you can just burst into any UNLOCKED house anytime you want and start stealing or talking. I absolutely HATE that aspect of the game. 2. ZERO barriers when traveling the worlds in Gothic. No idiotic little fences or bushes that you can't jump over as in Witcher, which get so annoying. 3. Combat - this is a personal preference. The Witcher has incredible combat finishing moves, but i still prefer to have total control over my character in combat, especially the ability to block and then strike, etc. Clicking on an enemy and then waiting to click again just seems rather dull sometimes, although the moves are so great that it's still enjoyable. But Gothic 2 had an incredible combat system that was incredibly satisying. Gothic 1 was much clunkier and more difficult to control, but it still gave the player complete control over the character in combat.4. No auto-sheathing in Gothic. In fact, unlike The Witcher, you can draw your sword anywhere, but if someone sees you do it where you're not supposed to, you will be threatened and attacked if you don't put it away. 5. No loading screens in Gothic. 6. No overuse of character models in Gothic. They went to GREAT lengths in those games to make every NPC seem like an individual. The constant reuse of models iin WItcher is incredibly distracting to me and very disappointing. Now, don't go nuts, Witcher lovers. I love the Witcher myself. It's a great game that was made with a lot of heart and passion, but some of the design choices really baffle me. To me, the first two Gothics should be a rough blueprint for all action/RPG games. I have never played a game that was more immersive and featured more realistic AI than the Gothic games. Btw, I enjoyed Gothic 3, but it was FAR inferior to the first two games, which the developers admit. They feel that they tried to put too much into the game and it suffered. The next game they are working on is supposed to get back to the feel of the first Gothic, so I can't wait for that....As for Witcher, I'm enjoying playing it, at times REALLY enjoying it, but it disappoints me that they missed out on so much greater potential by making some of the design decisions they made. I hope the next one corrects a lot of these shortcomings, because Geralt is a great character.

Well, it was their first big role-play game :) I am sure the next one will be *takes a deep breath* muuuuuuuuuuuuuuch better.Besides that, I hope they will add next time a Developer-Console players can unlock and use, too. And no, not to make the game easier - more to teleport into the areas and see all the places that aren't accessible while the first common play-round.
