Witcher on Linux

Hi allWe've started digging possibility to launch Witcher on Linux (hate switching to XP just to play the game). At this point the game developers didn't help, but I hope that once we debug it into chunks that we can question RED against, they will :)So, we have an entry on Wine AppDB: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=9593&iTestingId=16927 (vote!)and we have a bug in their bugzilla: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10264If you have any knowledge in the area, or any suggestions, please, put it there. The installation works, it hangs at the end, but the game is installed by the time (from what I know). The next stage is launching the game, which fails all along. Polish game users tried to install some additional libraries but without a success. Anyone has his feedback on this?

no chance at all.anyway. the update is that there is a guy working on the patch for TAGES (tages is a copyprotection system that currently makes the game not run) in bug http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=10264We track the game here: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=9593 . If you want to promote the importance of the game, vote for it :)

Someone made a trick and run Witcher on Linux!it required no-cd patch and some libs (read the bug comments), but it seems to be doable :)http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=9593

looks like there is a problem with nVidia 7xxx cards under WINE in Linux, since the characters are not animated and only their mouth/eyes/swords arei just upgraded to a nVidia 8600gt and everything works okthe performance is lower, the top goes like this: Windows XP/2003 > Windows Vista/2008 => Linux :) ( yes, looks like Vista/2008 performance is only slightly better than Linux, on the same setup)Debian Sid 64bitKernel 2.6.23.14KDE 3.5.8nVidia Linux driver 169.09 64bit + OpenGL 32bit compat libsWINE 0.9.54 64bitthe drawbacks:-no Antialias selectable in game - this isn't a problem since it can barely play without AA in Windows too, did not try to force AA via the nVidia Linux control panel-no EAX - can't really say if i'll miss it or not-Shadows High removes the shadows but Shadows Medium works ok-the health/toxicity bars seem to be missing, but moving the mouse over them works ok -the control keys in the Control menu are not shown, but you can change them ok, you'll get notified if there are any conflicts as usual-setting Gamma in-game menu does not do anything, setting it from the nVidia control panel works ok

Is the game crashing as on Windows, or more (less) stable?

for me the game runs fine, without crashes in Windows XP/2008 and Linux, so i can't really judge anything

Well, you made me envious, because for me the game crashes often. Maybe I will start looking for that WindowsXP/2008. I admit I have not heard about this version before.

Actually Licaon this is impressive stuff. I'm quite glad to see it running at all on another platform, thank you for those links, I wish I knew more so I could help as that working flawlessly on Linux would be a nice option.Nice, never mind got the mirror to go at average 450KB a sec. good stuff.Wow, that looks like some low frame rates, it works though, and decently. My only confusion is how in the world did you not die with no health? ]:->

you did no read my previous post: "-the health/toxicity bars seem to be missing, but moving the mouse over them works ok" low frame rates yes, i was playing at 1024x768 from a non Linux native partition ( NTFS ) and recording fullscreen video&audio, on a single core CPU, running the game through the WINE layer... that's wicked at least :)

Oh, I see what you meant with the XP/2008 notation. Funny enough, there seems to exist XP-2008 "version", which looks to be an unofficial repackaging of WinXP. I was wonding if that is what you were using. But in this case I just join the big crowd of people wondering what makes the game crash for them. Server 2008 is probably out of my reach.

/offtopic: thats Evaluation version...you can use it for 30 days for free...or until June 2008 if you get a key from Microsoft for free ontopic: just because on my system everything works ok on 3 different operating systems, on 2 different architectures means something... don't know what yet :D

Yeah, I just didn't understand why you said they were not there but, the bars themselves were in fact there, simply empty. ;) I understand now that's what you meant. I looked for the rollover point in the vid again, still didn't see one.I'm glad it runs at all honestly and I wish I'd seen this effect though, the reappearing fills to the bars when paused and mouse rolled over.

unfortunately there aren't any WINE patches, not even for the issues that nVidia 7xxx cards experiencesome advice:-have the game on a Linux partition (xfs/reiserfs/ext3)-run the game with: WINEDEBUG=-all wine witcher.exe so that debugging info is not endlessly shown in the console, this will give you a slight performance boost-try to mess around the registry settingsbelow are my registry settings, you can save them to a file and import the file into regeditthe game seems to work fine with or without the DirectX 9 DLL overrides
