Well imbuing weapons with runes is common practice among witchers, so I don't see why they wouldn't do that to shields as well. :) Hmm, maybe Quen might interact directly with the shield, through a technique that makes the witcher one with his shield?

I like the idea of using it in potions or mending slightly broken shields. But if the shield would shatter, which would rarely happen, don't think you would be able to restore it to it's full strength, even with the sap.

A rune on the back of the shield behind the central grip allowing the bearer (lel) to channel Quen through it, allowing the shield to effectively deflect physical hits and quell harmful magic. "With good concentration, footing and strength the bearer can practically stop any blow, be it the tail of a mountain Slyzard or the scythe of Death himself". A tale among the students of the bear school, none dare to test this myth; except one ;)

If a bear's shield breaks or is lost, they resort to an agile stance which later becomes the tried and true "modern" primary witcher stance. Being armed with an axe however makes this less effective and the bear should attain another shield, be it crafted or taken from the armory of the school or they won't be 100% in combat.

Was thinking about the same thing, just don't know if runes really can interact with witcher signs, at least I've never seen it anywhere. But hey, it's fan fiction. :p

Yeah, makes sense. It would be like running with just one shoe.

But enough about the Bear School. Do you guys have any other ideas for other schools?

The resonating crystals and rune rooms in Loc Muinne? It wouldn't necessarily be sign dependent, it would just react to an electric charge and make an electromagnetic field around the shield front. So if a mage were to cast lightning at the witcher, it would most probably deflect and/or power up the shield.

I lack the talent to draw up worthy fan art but non-human witchers are definitely something I'd like to fan-fictionalise. Since the Aen Seidhe believed in coexistence with the land, they usually stayed away from monsters. The Aen Elle however (Elves from another world that Ciri met), could be a different story.

Being another world victimised by the conjuction of the spheres, the elf-dominant world became riddled with creatures not native to their land. Not being apart of the natural ecosystem, these monsters caused tremors that the elves knew had to be dealt with. So the elven societies consulted each other and thereby using their understanding of nature as a weapon, created enclaves dedicated to teaching, training and creating warriors meant for slaying the unworldly beasts. These warriors were trained in archery and stealth above all and were taught that patience, agility and silence were key to adapting, outsmarting and killing the post-conjunction creatures. The enclave of Milva'caed became the first of several places where monster slayers were bred, a fortress among the trees where kite's soar.

As far as I know the TV show is not canon. But a female only witcher school sounds very interesting.
What would their fighting style be? What weapons would they use?

Well the Griffin/Griffon (idk which) school would be similar to the Wolf and Cat school. Going by the fan-art, speed and agility with two-handed swords. Practically a school of Buffy the Vampire Slayers

Yep, there is Adela and some others she-witchers (witcheresses?) in TV series, but it's the most non-canon adaptation of Sapkowski's books ever :p

The School of the Vipers.

Your Imperial Majesty, greetings and felicitations. I trust this missive finds you in good health and it is my fondest wish that you remain so from now until the end of your days, as it is the wish of all true sons and subjects of Nilfgaard. For the past half decade I have, as per your last command, spent my time studying the strange mutant species known as Witcher's to the Nordling's and known to themselves as Viper's. The results are rather astonishing and one may easily see why your esteemed attention has been focused upon them.

Overview: The Viper's are a very old school of Witcher's that were here long before Nilfgaard brought civilisation and peace to these benighted marches, they arose with the first incursions of Humans into the area and this information I recieved from an Elven colleague of Dol Blathanna who is a first hand witness of these events, so its authenticity is surprisingly trustworthy. They were formed to combat monsters and abominations, creatures of the Conjuction that had crossed over from what hellish realms one shudders to think of.
The world as we know it was different then, great shining Elven Kingdoms graced our fair world, and bathed under a young fierce sun. The Aen Seidhe were unrivalled masters of the land and could see no threat, not from the monstrous creatures of the Conjuctions or the strange hairy barbaric Apes which they judged us to be.They had grown lazy and over-confident, with a certain sense of ennui resulting from their virtually immortal lifespans, thus they were doomed.
The world moved on and our people, raucous and rude, took what they needed and bred like rabbits. A superior species had entered the biosphere, the results were the same as in any other, the weak native fauna began to fail. With immortality breeding was not such an issue for the Aen Seidhe, and though mighty in spell and arms, their armies were never many, while there were always more of us. By the time they saw that something needed to be done it was too late, and they had begun their centuries long fall. Simple attrition.
This is where the Witcher's stepped in, the land was still largely wild and haunted by monstrous denizens, that had thrived on the wars between our peoples, and the Witcher of the Viper school were the solution here. In essence we created cunning monsters to deal with monsters, and they were surprisingly effective. In rural communities and pioneer settlements these monster slayers were in high demand, and earned good money pursuing their trade, but they were never viewed favourably, and asked to move on once the threat had been removed.
The mutations, magics and alchemy that had created them had created in truth a new species, for it could not breed with us, and thus it was hated and feared, maybe more so than even the other non humans. There is much contention among the scientific and philosophical community as you know, stating that the Elves being able to breed with us are merely a long lost race of Humanity, or that we are a part of their species. Witcher's however are both too near and too far away from us to be comfortable with them, they evoke the fear of the Changeling, the spy and the serpent nestling in our midst.

The Vipers: There were schools established all over the world, all slightly different and influenced by the Mage's, scholar's, alchemist's, philosopher's and (it must be said) madmen who created them. The Viper school had a few notable differences from the Witcher that you have repeatedly come into contact with, whom I believe is a rather famous individual of the Northern school of the Wolf.
First and foremost the Viper's still bear twin swords, but these are often smaller blades used at the same time, and often coated with oils, venoms and runic symbols specific to the monsters they are currently fighting. Due to their modern day penury they are rarely silver coated as I believe the Northerners are wont to do. These are often referred to as the forked tongue of the Viper, and used with extraordinary skill and lethality, in a fighting style that is most probably an Elven derivative, but far more deadly.
They make great use of magical signs, alchemical potions and devices that conjure different effects, they are most skilled with these things but largely relegate their use to the older members of the Order. A jealously guarded secret, as it should be.
They remain lightly but sturdily armoured, leather jacks with whatever piecemeal pieces of plate or mail they can scrape together, and often wear a hood to hide their identity from the common folk as they travel. As you know they are not a welcome sight, and the people are no longer in much need of their services, especially in a peaceful, prosperous realms such as you own, your magnificence.
Their philosophy is the main difference between these Witcher's and their Northern cousins, the Viper's believe that one blow can solve all matters, when delivered at the right point and time. They preach to their initiates that they must know their enemy, discover its weakness, lead it to where they wish the confrontation to occur and then take advantage of this with one fell strike. Strike like a Viper from hiding, strike once and true.
To do this they study, and my lord I am truly humbled by their learning, libraries of tomes long since lost to history lie in their private dens. Bestiaries, alchemical tomes, folklore, biological treaties and so much more. They are truly well read and educated individuals, and mastery of the mind is just as keenly drilled into their initiates as mastery of their swords With the fall of their last stronghold and the removal of their library into our care I can personally assure you that all care and maintenance shall be exercised to preserve this precious knowledge, and I of course give our Fraternities most humble thanks to your blessed kindness and charity.

Biological Abnormalities: As you noted from your own experiences Majesty this species is extraordinary: Superhuman speed and grace, a constitution that beggars belief and shrugs off disease with an astonishing ease, strength as great as any warrior and the training to apply these gifts in a frankly terrifying manner should they choose. Whoever created these creatures knew exactly what they were doing, and was either a genius or a sadistic fool, as the transformation must be enormously painful for both the psyche and the physical body.
They also seem to have some difficulty processing some of the more complicated emotional aspects of Humanity, but I remain unsure as to whether this is a symptom of their unique condition, or a side effect of the life they lead and the trauma they suffered.
The Viper's however have an additional flaw in their physical make-up. They do not stop growing until death, and their body are subject to change and strengthening as they age, becoming ever more muscled, huge and imposing. The older members of the profession whom suffer from this are called by the younger ones Dragons, an affectionate nickname, and seemingly obeyed without questioning. These large specimens are no doubt extremely dangerous, cunning, experienced and brutish looking to the average man in the street.

Specimens: There are currently three groups operating in you Majesties realm, two of whom are keeping very quiet and eeking out an existence as their profession entails, we know only their general location. However the third group is accompanying a rogue Sorceress of unknown identity north, and through no fault of their own have attracted attention numerous times. The Sorceress seems to be of a...fiery disposition and is blowing any cover they seek to maintain.
They are three Viper's, using the names Aucke's, Serrit and Uta. They are led by a fourth, a Viper "Dragon" known as Letho, and are to be considered extremely dangerous, cunning and resourceful.

Your humble servant.

Bertram DeAldersburg.

Cheers. I really like your Bear school idea Kinley, perhaps a silver boss on their shields, or runes spelling "UT" inscribed into the wood. The old Saxon shieldbearers used to chant that at their foes as they formed their famous Shield Wall. "Ut" meaning "out" so appropriate for anybody trying to breach the wall.

The Witcher school of the Rabbit.

They hail from a an area they call Rabbiton....(ha!)

This is a Halfling/Hobbit only club. Very agile , Stealthy, acrobats are their main fighting advantage. Very flashy fighting style. They typically run in groups. No less than 2 and no more than 5.

They use their flashy style to distract their attackers while another witcher of the rabbit school hides and seeks an opening to attack.
They are the only witchers that use both melee weapons and ranged equally. Hand cross bows(typically 1 but 2 are not uncommon)
They also carry a back up ranged weapon which can vary. Hand slings, blow guns, bolas, throwing knives and even a rare few boomerangs

Melee weapons are are fast in and out type weapons.
The biggest blade you will see is a short sword, they do use knives a lot sometimes one in each hand, they use a lot flash think butterfly knives.\
They also have a fondness for spears. As they get to take away some of the reach advantage they give up to larger opponents. They also use the spear to help them pole vault in for a stealthy hit or away from danger.

Signs have been modified to allow maximum effect for their strengths and weaknesses.
. Aard being the strongest and a favorite as it pushes larger opponents away in a hurry of need be.
They do not use igni.
They do have an alternative sign called dym. It is more or less a smoke screen so they can hide or use for a hasty retreat.
They do not have Yrden either.
Again they have a alternative called pomali. It doesn't hold the target in place rather it slows them down for a while, but just as suddenly disengages after a while during a time when the target is fighting the hardest to move. Many have fallen down from this effect to suddenly find a witcher of the rabbit school already retreating from the death strike they just delivered but the target was unaware it even happened. That is until they try to stand again only to fall over dead.
They use axii like any other witcher would.
They have one other sign that is new and alternative use of aard.
It is called skok and it allows them to jump or leap a great distance very fast. it can be used for both offense and defense

I will stop here and finish later....

gotta think on potions and blade oils etc.....

hope you guys like my witcher interpretation. I have a few pet rabbits who always entertain.......

I like that idea, maybe they could form monster hunting parties, where a shield wall would be necessary for huge swarms of monsters. Or would that be TOO similar to vikings and would seem too much of a rip off? The rune would need to be different though, since Skelligans use a variation of Elder Speech if I remember correctly. So a variation of the Welsh word "allan" or something along those lines would work.

@War Machine That's a cool idea, and quite a funny one if you ask me, imagine a group of little witchers trying to fight an ice giant. It would be quite a sight.

@Валькирия That's some nice art, a bit too calm for a Cat Witcher though, aren't they deranged?

Not all of them IMHO. Indeed, many of them was sociopathic killers (like Brehen from "Season of Storms" or adepts from "The Betrayal" graphic-novel), but some of them wasn't deranged (Guxart from graphic-novel).

At the end of "The Betrayal" former king of Kaedwen ordered his soldiers to kill also Cats (Cats thought that he want to murder only Wolves - I love scene, when he says "Kill'em all"). In "Season of Storms" Brehen says that Cats have banned from Kaer Morhen. Perhaps these events will change their nature?

"Is good! Is not Kvas, but is still good!" So saying the drunkard raised the goblet in his trembling hands and drained it dry, leaving his long mustaches wet with drool and wine and his hands a mite steadier.

Bertram smiled and pushed the bottle of twenty year old Toussaint Red over to the other side of the table, what a waste to feed this exquisite vintage to such an uncouth individual, still it was this or the rack and Bertram had no liking for violence. The big drunkard smiled, a pathetic gratefulness in his eyes and filled his goblet ever so slowly and precisely.

Bertram took the time to look him over with a critical eye, he had once been a big man, indeed his shoulders were still wide and his clothes hung loose on his frame. A warrior no doubt, born and raised in heavy mail with a sword in his hands before his prick, yes there were the telltale scars of duelling on his forearms. His clothes now billowing about his frame, encrusted with filth, spilt food and drink, wer of a good cut and sturdy wool. Faded garish colours still glinted through the ground in dirt, only a rich man could afford such dyes, so possibly the drunkard was telling the truth and he was an exiled nobleman from far Borea, the legendary land beyond the worlds end.

Bertram leaned forward letting his smile warm the room and a fat gold coin fall from his fingers. "There is more to come friend, a warm room, nourishing meals and all the wine you can drink. Simply tell me a tale of your homeland."

"Borea, what you wish know?" The warrior asked, knuckling his mustaches dry and then licking the wine from his filthy fingers.

"Witcher's my friend, the monster slayers of your land, tell me of them?"

"Witcher's not kill monsters in Borea!"

"What!" Bertram asked leanng further forward, his elbows on the table and chin in his hands.

"Witcher's not kill monsters. Monsters stay in Wald and not bother anyone, Witcher's of Borea slay dead that walk, that is curse that stalks our land and the Raven's are the only effective cure."

"The Raven's?"

"Yes Witcher's bear medallion of Raven, they haunt the battlefield and make sure all rest as they should, always dress in black with long cloaks and brimmed hats. You have problem with dead rising then the Raven's will come and deal with it for a purse of silver, but many are loathe to call them, they have a reputation as stormcrows, bringers of doom and trouble and it is said they steal orphans from the battlefield. Still if you want the dead to sleep, then the Raven's must come."

"What do they look like?"

"Look like men." He shrugged and drank some more, "But very ugly men. They all tall and very pale, with long lank black hair and they move too quick, they seem to skip and jerk as if they're slipping past your eyes." He leaned forward and grinned. "It as if you drunk all time watching them."

The scholar chuckled and noted this down in his mind, quicker than the other schools of the Witcher?

"And you should see them fight! Is terrifying, they pull out their sabres and wish, swish, splat, limbs go flying in all directions. Anybody enter that steel web dies, for it is said that their swords are blessed by the Lord of the Mound and are instruments holy to death. Old mothers say that that is a part of their training, becoming acolytes of the Death God. They certainly look half dead!"

"They are students of a religious doctrine?"

"More pursue than study I think, but they always go to the Mounds and the Deathman to pray before embarking on their tasks, I have seen this."

"Do they...do they possess any tricks, strange trinkets or powers like a Sorceror might use?"

"Oh yes! Big bangs, choking fumes, burning waters that eat steel and cold blue fire and ice that they can call forth from their hands at any time. I have seen one summon a shield of ice that repelled the blows of his attackers, throw the dead into their graves with a gesture and burning a man to blackened ash with their blue flame!" He leaned forward. "The old wives say that they can steal truth from your tongue!"

Bertram nodded, signs and alchemical items, though of a suitable wintry theme for the tundra of Borea. "So my friend if I might ask, why is Borea so beset by the Undead?"

The warrior stopped his drinking, letting the wine spill over his hands and mustaches while his eyes grew small and angry. Slamming down his goblet he leaned forward, his once comically befuddled features growing hard and fierce. "I tell you why, is because of damn Konung! He grow old and mad and listen to Elves, he impale his family when they try to stop him and he eat them. He close gates of Holmgard and when they are opened the dead pour forth to bedevil us, for two centuries we of the Seven Cities have fought them. Is a last gift of the Elves, even as we burn them they laugh and tell us they will see us on other side of death. Pointy eared bastards!"

Bertram sat back astounded, "The Elves tricked your...konung into undeath?"

"Yes bastard sit on his throne still, cackling and calling up the dead to serve him." The warrior seized his goblet and emptied it, before pointing his finger at the scholar. "The Raven's barely contain the curse that wracks Borea, its champions and knights all fled, haunted by dreams of their wives and children crawling from the dark earth."

With a snarl the drunkard swept bottle and goblet from the table, seizing Bertram by the collar he shoved his face into the scholars, his fetid breath gaging the gentleman and his bloodshot eyes spitting danger. "We condemned to death also, death of coward and drunk, we are failure whose great grandfather destroyed our nation and our blood is cursed!"

With a sob the drunkard let the scholar drop and lurched for the inn door, pushing through the crowds and roaring obscenities. Bertram smoothed his collar, regained his seat and waved over the servants to clear the table. Every tale of the Witcher's, every rumour was wrapped in tragedy and despair, one could almost believe the killers were doomed.
