Witcher themed Board Game

Hi everybody.

I came to ask a / few simple question / questions.
But first perhaps a bit what this is about.
In year 2013 December. I made a Witcher themed Board game. I contacted Marcin about it through this forum and CD Projekt Red was really happy to see what I have to show. So I was preparing my material to sent images and description of the game when my personal life got turned upside down as someone I love got seriously ill. Needless to say I basically put / threw everything in my life aside and decided to spend every possible moment with her.

So Marcin and Project Red never got to see my board game. I did send a few days ago new private message to Marcin about the game, explaining my situation and if they are still interested in it but he has yet to respond and I imagine they are really busy with Witcher 3 and what not. This is not meant to be about my personal life but just a short description of events I guess.

I don't like to judge the games I make they are more or less done for friends and people I know so that we play them together. But with this game and my love for the witcher books and games I wanted to give it my best and at least show it to the guys and get their opinion and didn't want to just leave it at one of those games made for my friends. It was them who liked it and pushed me towards trying to do something about it.

And so I am here making this post. It may result to nothing who knows. But life is too short, to not give it your best and pursue the things you love and in general wish to do. So I guess this is my try at that, to the best of my abilities even though it may result to nothing.

A BIT ABOUT THE GAME AND HOW IT PLAYS:

- You assume the role of a witcher. It can be played from 1-6 or theoretically more people. Each person who joins is another witcher.
- The map is made out of the "entire" Witcher world From Nilfgard and The city of the Golden Tower up to the northern Kingdoms and city of Lan Exeter
- You traverse the land and hunt monsters for a living. You take up a job and upon success you collect your reward
- The map consists out of many kingdoms (witcher world) and each kingdom of many cities. Each kingdom has a capital. There is where you get your missions.
- Sometimes you know what to expect setting on a mission. Other times there are only rumors about it and you don't know what you will find until you reach the destination. Sometimes just like in the books, you seek for a job but you have trouble finding it in that particular area.
- There are seasons in the game, there is weather in the game, there is night and day, there are rivers, forests... all play their part in your journey as also making it harder or easier to travel.
- Some monsters you will meet only when certain conditions are met
- Some monsters get stronger and more dangerous, or more fragile depending on many factors. To know your monster, to know its habitat and advantages as weakness is essential.
- You can gather information on monsters but you have to nose around and pay the price for people to talk
- The more you know the likelier you are to succeed , the likelier it is you will do your job more efficiently, the likelier it is that you wont get killed
- Surviving through the game is not your only goal however. Witcher does his job not only because he kills monsters, but because it is his living.
- Witcher does not only fight monsters, he sometimes has to fight people as well and sometimes....
- You use silver for monsters, steel for humans, you use the signs as well but you have to learn them and to learn them you have to travel the land.
- You may travel on foot or you may seek other means of travel which are faster but they too come with a price.
- Tactical planning and decision making is crucial. You can decide to take one road but it may have been better that you would have taken the other. You may take a job but it may be more than you expected or can handle. Dont think everything will always go as you plan, account for that and adapt, but most of all prepare and think before acting. Managing to do just that may be the difference between a highly efficient and not so menacing witcher, managing that may be the difference between a live or a dead one.
.....

The game is set to be involving and I try to did my best to transfer the world I read in the books on to the board game so you actually feel like a witcher when playing. It is easy to learn, it is easy to play, but it is not a simple minded game it has what I would call a soul and a lot of content. You may manage to get by without thinking too much about it and playing casually for pure fun and exploring, adventuring, but the game will always reward those who immerse themselves into it and try to use all of what the game has to offer.
Like I said I don't like and cannot objectively judge my games, but people who played it enjoyed it and pushed me towards doing something about it. and so I came to ask this community

Would you be interested in something like this?
Does it sound interesting to you or not?
Would you be interested to learn more and perhaps give it a try?

All those questions and more I guess

I apologize for taking your time with this post and I really do thank anybody who will spend some of it reading this and perhaps taking additional effort to write something back.

Regards

Lan

Just an update on this, in case anyone is interested, that the guys from CD Projekt Red have been once again kind enough to take their valuable time to respond to my message and that I was directed to where to further send the info and inquiry. So I have done just that.

Also am giving you guys, if you are interested in it, a sneak peak -> this is the prototype of the Board Game World MAP.

Thanks for doing this Lan, the game sounds amazing. It seems there is a lot of content so hopefully you can explain the rules well, so people can learn how to play easily.

That is a tremendous effort on the map, it looks so detailed. Did you base it off Ortelius' maps?

Again many thanks for sharing this with us, and I am really interested to see how it all plays out.

Also, since you shared a bit of your personal story with us, I'd like to respond to that as well. I want to tell you something you probably already know. Always try to keep your head up no matter what life throws your way. I know it sounds cliche and it doesn't really help much, but I've found out that it is positive attitude that allows someone to move forward in his/her life, and "make" it take a turn for the better. I hope all is well. :)

Thank you StaGiors.

As far as map creation goes. If anyone is interested in that here is something about that:

a) When creating a map I used all sort of reference and data available I could have find. Ortelius' maps were definitely among them. I reread parts of the books and scavenge the internet for further data anything I could found and compared it with what I already had. If I can I would also like to use this "moment" and thank all of those people who made sure that info for me to search and look at was even there.
b) Creating the MAP I basically set myself 3 main goals

- Transferring the world
To try to mirror the world found in the books and experience playing the PC game as much as possible. (which is one of the reasons why the map is this large) So you actually have a feeling of traveling, exploring and traversing the land, so that you actually feel the weight of obstacles thrown in your way and the need to reach destinations in time.

- Game mechanics.
To try to make sure that while transferring the world from the books on the Map the whole thing is also playable. Something CD Projekt RED said very well. Large world and what not sounds fun and neat at first, but you have to fill it up with content, you have to make sure every single spot has it's meaning and place on the map. So larger also means more responsibility and work which can backfire at you if you are not determined to do the job 100%.

- Goals / Roads
Really a broad section but what I mean by this is the following. I personally believe that humans are always striving for goals in our life and need to set them in order to give it meaning. These naturally can be numerous. But at the same time I also believe it is not the goal what we are really after. To achieve a goal naturally feels great and is important but at the same time people often will find themselves "empty" upon reaching the set goal and will need to give themselves a new one. So in my opinion you should not sprint your way towards each goal in a straight line, for you may miss the surroundings. Meaning that I believe it is the path towards the goal which matters more than the goal itself. When playing a game you wish to naturally see the conclusion, to finish it, but at the same time you want to enjoy the experience for as long as possible.
So that is what I meant with Goals / Roads -> I tried to make sure people get engaged into the game itself the "story" each game play will write and not just pursue the ultimate goal of "winning". So that at the end of the game players will say, wow this was some game / journey etc even if they weren't the winners.

As for the personal part. Thank you once again. I know, Dum spiro spero is one of my two main mottoes in life.

Here an update about this..

I contacted Rafal Jaki (executive producer of Witcher Adventure Game) about the board game and yesterday when I came home from a game testing I got the following E-mail.

Dear Lan,

First of all many thanks for taking the time and describing the game. I’m the executive producer of the Witcher Adventure Game and also a true board game geek :)

The board game that we are doing currently has some similar points with your design but also we are planing to work with Ignacy Trzewiczek and Fanatsy Flight Games to bring to market more Witcher board game if there will be interest.

So at this stage I’m sorry but we are not looking for new board game in the Witcher world – we wish you all the best with your project.

Pozdrawiam / All the best

What this basically means for my project is that I will be taking the path towards creating this board game alone. It was to be expected, so no surprise there. It is however a harsh road.
( The number of things involved from designs, experience, further work on game mechanics, game testing, spreading the word about the game, building up community, developing better prototypes and than in the end trying to make it all work through a Kickstarter (where it is decided if you have done enough to get people to support the project and making it a reality)
So yeah not an easy road, my two friends have done it with their board game and it took them about 3 years to pull it off and countless hours, some money investments and so on. That is why any help you can get on that road is always welcomed. However I am still determined to do it.
So while the response might not be the best one, I did expect it and am happy Mr. Jaki was kind enough to give it.

I have however asked Mr. Jaki if I would be allowed to use the Witcher name or / and theme for my board game and am now waiting for a response on that.

That answer will determine whether or not you guys will get to see this game becoming a Witcher board game, Witcher theme, or not.

Will get back to you about it. :)

Since the last time I posted here some time has passed. The Board game will not be, as mentioned above, Witcher themed. So it has moved away from that, but the main theme remains monster hunting and it was inspired by the Witcher novels. :)

Game mechanics have changed a bit, new features were added and also a girl has joined the "project", her name is Sara and she is an artist.

Here is some of the concept arts which will be used for monsters and such

Monster - Lamia

Monster - Koschei

Monster - Forktail

Monster - Golem

Just to give a few examples. Hope you like them
