When given the option, I'm always playing as a female character. This is the reason why Cyberpunk 2077 is the only CDProjektRed game I've played to its fullest. I assure you that this choice comes strictly from preference and not out of spite or misandry.

Just look at the three main Dragon Age games. Each entry has a different protagonist and you get to be either male, female and romance almost whoever you want. in my playthroughs, all the protagonists are lady-loving ladies. The idea that sort of thing can happen in a major game series is so beautiful that I get tears in my eyes just thinking about it.

I just like to root for women, heck any minority that traditionally isn't represented well in media. Their victories matter more, to me anyway.

i always choose male if there is an option, especially like in Monster Hunter, i like male's armor more

i might go for female for another playthrough to change how it is feels

I don't really have a general preference in regards to character gender.

In games with voiced protagonists, I usually choose based on the voice acting. In Cyberpunk and Dragon Age II, I prefer the female voice, where as in Dragon Age Inquisition, I liked the British male voice actor.

Some times the type of character I'm playing impacts my decision too. Orcs, big ugly aliens, mafia goons and other bruiser type characters will always be male for me. Where as stealth characters, hackers and certainly elves in fantasy games are often positions best filled by female characters.

And then there's gender locked romances. In Cyberpunk, Judy is way better than Panam, so female V is the way to go. But in Dragon Age Origins, you gotta play male because of Morrigan. Really any game with a moody goth type chick and I'm romancing her no matter what form my character is required to take.

Voted a while ago,

I prefer female, because I'm female. But I'll ocasionally play as a male, because its fun.
One of my most fun playthroughs as a male was when I roleplayed as a psychotic wizard in Skyrim. Decisions were made with a cointoss.
I have yet to play male in CP2077.

I almost always play as female. Worked on CP2077 Judy was best romance. The voice actors usually are more for my ears like in Fallout4. If I do multiple runs I do the odd male one but there will be more of me as trap than as a dude. Why? Well my shrink could judge but maybe it's video game and I could do it like I want to.

I usually go with female characters, mostly because male characters are too often these really bulked up very muscular types and I don't care for that aesthetic. Now if there were options for a sleek male character I'd probably pic that. Then again, in my opinion, when the protagonist is voiced the female voice is usually the better one.

As a male, male, due to the avatar feeling of self by sorta putting myself in the character's shoes,
but I do understand the appeal of using sexy female characters for their assets, but I just happen to not play many female protagonists at all.

im glad that someone brought this phrasing up "sexy females for their assets"... thats acutally what i personally dislike that a lot of female characters are still designed as "sexy eyecatcher" - on the other hand i like that some studios try to break this cliché like Naughty with Ellie, Dina, Abby making them look like more common or Gurilla Games with Aloy who explicate said they decided on purpose to make her not a sexbomb. i hope more female chars are created that way leaving this old school lara croft big bud big tits cliche just for the sake of it... both ips (LoU & Horizon) are fantastic and successful what shows you dont need these sexappeal to make great games with female characters anymore - storytelling & atmosphere is all what counts to raise on top ^^

i can understand the relic of the past were the majority of gamers were just males who loved those sexbombs but these times are long over... at least out of the anime/manga genre but thats another story... [. . .]

See a lot of players seemingly playing a female V in threads like Share Your V! (Keep it Classy), and Share your screenshots, NPCS, World, or your Character. Got me a little curious as to how that percentage lies. Hench this poll. Think playing with females has the upper-hand.

I myself always play with female characters because, (a) am hetero, (b) love how game-developers make females animate in games, how they look, how they perform, what they wear, how they move, their personality, how they fight, how they wield weapons, how they operate, how they solve issues and obstacles.

Games of old practically always had male protagonists, so playing with a male was common. Was actually, for myself at least, the arrival of Tomb Raider on the first PlayStation, when playing with a female became apparent.

Since then, some games were male only, some female only, and some you could choose. So which do you prefer?

(1 unchangeable unanimous vote).
What does it matter? Why ask the question?

My bad. Great point actually.
Seeing the vote being on the female character influenced me to state the obvious that it's mainly from sex appeal, but you're right.

Female Characters like Ellie or whoever else could be great from their writing without needing sex appeal.
Max and Chloe in Life is Strange, Mary Jane in Marvel's Spider-Man, Clementine in The Walking Dead.
There's probably more from the few I've played but I can't think of any more, but anyway.

Issues I have with this point of view.....most male main characters in games are still buff good looking guys, and I haven't seen any older, out of shape, "normal" guys being pushed out as main characters....it isn't sexist to want nice scenery on the screen, both male OR female. Take Skyrim as an example, take off the shirt of a male character, even a mage one, and you will see 6+ packs, and the face is what you make of it, but body wise...well 90% of men will never look that good.

Second issue I have, is the assumption is seemingly that there can't be both nice sexy looking women AND good storytelling/atmosphere. In RPG definitely it should be left to the player to decide, and in more designed character based games, whatever the designer wants,. Making "common" or in some cases ugly just because they don't want to encourage "male gaze" as some like to call it, is all too common and to my mind repugnant, as in a game I am hopefully spending hours and hours with this avatar, and unless for a story reason, I really don't want to look at "common".....if I wanted "common" I would just go people watch in my local city, it would be likely cheaper. Yes, some characters SHOULD be normal for story reasons....but again, I have seen this taken way too far in an effort to make them "extra normal", and when the story merits it, fine but not just to stick it too male gamers.
