Work in Progress FAQ for The Witcher III: Wild Hunt

This is the beginning of a Frequently Asked Questions thread for The Wild Hunt. This was originally @jerf.674‘s idea, in response to lots of new threads popping up, just for single questions. I have taken the liberty of setting the wheels in motion. His suggested plan, and a few other comments on it, may be found here: http://forums.cdprojektred.com/threads/28531-New-Forum-Launch-opinions-suggestions/page31

This is the collection thread, open to input from our devoted forum community members, for the benefit of new members, and people just looking for information on the game. If you’ve seen a particular recurring question about the forthcoming title, please, feel free to post it here, and supply a clear, concise answer. We're trying to get as many common questions as possible answered in one place.

Please bear in mind, though, that this is a general FAQ for the game, intended to aid newcomers, and is not the place for detailed plot questions, debates, or extensive speculation on features or mechanics!

Once we’ve gathered these questions and answers, the thread will be proofed and edited, then it will be posted as a sticky in the main TW3 forum.

Thanks to our moderators, the community, and jerf.674.

To start off, here are a few common technical questions, to which I’ve supplied answers:

  • On what platforms can I play The Witcher III?
PC (Windows only, at present), Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

  • Can my PC run The Witcher III? What are the system requirements?
Minimum System Requirements
Intel CPU Core i5-2500K 3.3GHz
AMD CPU Phenom II X4 940
Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 660
AMD GPU Radeon HD 7870
RAM 6GB
OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
DirectX 11
HDD Space 40 GB

Recommended System Requirements

Intel CPU Core i7 3770 3,4 GHz
AMD CPU AMD FX-8350 4 GHz
Nvidia GPU GeForce GTX 770
AMD GPU Radeon R9 290
RAM 8GB
OS 64-bit Windows 7 or 64-bit Windows 8 (8.1)
DirectX 11
HDD Space 40 GB

  • Can I use a console controller on PC?

Yes, the Sony Dualshock 4 controller, and the X-box controller are both supported on PC.

  • If I want to play with a mouse and keyboard, can I remap the keys?
Yes, you can use mouse and keyboard, and map the keys you would like to use.

  • What fps can we expect the game have on the three platforms?
The game will run in 1080p/30fps on PlayStation 4 and 900p/30fps on Xbox One. On PC, it is expected that, at the recommended system requirements, or better, a GeForce GTX 980, or near equivalent GPU, will be required for 60 fps.

  • Do I need to play the previous games before starting Wild Hunt?

No, The Witcher III is a new, stand-alone RPG, meant to be enjoyed by both new and returning players alike. If you wish to play the previous titles, they may give you a deeper, and richer perspective on the world of The Witcher, but it is not necessary in order to play.

  • What languages are supported in the game?

. . . on Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation®4. . .The game will be available in the following languages: English, Polish, German, French, Russian, Brazilian Portuguese and Japanese (full voiceover); Arabic, Italian, Spanish, Traditional Chinese, Czech, Hungarian, Latin America Spanish, Korean (subtitles).

  • How long is the game?

There are approximately 50 hours of main story gameplay, with an additional 50+ hours of side quests. For players who wish to explore and pursue everything, there can be over 200 hours; however, this depends very much on your playing style, and quests choices. An estimated average of 75 - 150 hours can be expected.

  • So, The Witcher III is this huge open-world, right? Is it anything like Skyrim?
The Witcher III is a vast, multi-region game, comprising of two larger areas, and several smaller ones, which combine to create over 3-times the size of Skyrim's single-region open-world. But apart from size, there are also other very important differences. The Witcher series is inspired by the novels of Andrzej Sapkowski, and thus the game is driven by its story, rather than pure, freestyle adventures. In The Witcher, you do not have the same control to customise your character's appearance, gender, or race, as in The Elder Scrolls. You'll play as Geralt of Riva, the Monster Hunter, a man with his own complex personality, histories, and relationships. While you will be able to customise your skills, gear, and even your hair and beard, you must don the mantle of the protagonist Geralt for most of the game. But what kind of man Geralt will be is up to you. . . .

  • Where can I order the Collector’s Edition?

The Collector’s Edition is generally no longer available in most countries, and more copies will not be released.

  • What are the 16 Free DLCs? How do I get them?

The FREE DLC program for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt consists of 16 entirely free DLCs, that will be available for every gamer owning a copy of Wild Hunt, for Xbox One, the all-in-one games and entertainment system from Microsoft, PC, and PlayStation®4, and is applicable to all versions (digital or physical, standard or Collector’s).

On May 20th we will release the first bundle of DLCs (2 of the planned 16) -- the Temerian Armor Set (horse armor included) and a Beard and Hairstyle Set for Geralt, the game’s protagonist. After this date, a DLC bundle consisting of twoDLCs will be published every week, entirely for free. Gamers are entitled to the free DLC regardless of obtaining the game via pre-order or after launch. Instructions on how to obtain DLCs on specific platforms will be provided at a later date.

For additional details about the 16 FREE DLC program, please refer to the below QA

Q: What do I have to do to receive the 16 free DLCs?
A: The only thing you need to do to receive the 16 DLCs is purchase The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. All of the DLCs will be available for free on every platform (i.e. Xbox One, PC, and PlayStation 4).

Q: Do I have to pre-order to get the free DLCs?
A: No, each piece of content will be available for download regardless of you buying the game before or after launch on May 19th, 2015.

Q: I have the standard version of the game (i.e. not the Collector’s Edition). Do I still get the free DLCs?
A: Yes. You get the 16 DLCs regardless of the version of the game you bought (i.e. standard or Collector's, digital or physical).

Q: What’s the plan? When can I expect the DLCs to be released?
A: The plan is to release a new DLC bundle (each bundle contains two DLCs) on a weekly basis, following the game’s launch May 19th, 2015. The first DLC bundle will be released the next day on May 20th. The next bundle will be available for download a week after that, on May 27th, the next on June 3rd, and so on. The first bundle will contain the Temerian Armor Set and a Beard and Hairstyle Set for Geralt. The second bundle will contain an additional quest and an alternative look for one of the game’s main characters -- Yennefer of Vengerberg.

  • What about the Expansions, are they part of the DLCs?

No, the two expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, are independent of the 16 free DLCs. Purchase of The Witcher III will not grant you access to the Expansions. They must be purchased separately.

Hearts of Stone will premiere in October, while Blood and Wine is slated for release in the first quarter of 2016. Both expansions will be available on all three platforms: Xbox One, PC, PlayStation 4.
For more information on obtaining the expansions, please visit buy.thewitcher.com.

  • Does the Collector's Edition include any addition game content, such as DLCs or the Expansion Packs?
No, the DLCs announced are free for everyone who buys the game, and the Expansion Packs must be bought separately.

  • Do I need The Witcher III to play the Expansions? Are they stand-alone games?
The Witcher III is required to play the Expansions: they are not stand-alone games

  • I’ve bought the PC retail copy of The Witcher III: what version of the Expansions do I buy?
The boxed PC version of the game is compatible only with the Expansion Pass sold on GOG.com.

  • Does the retail version of the game use Steam or GOG Galaxy for installation? Do I need an internet connection to play?
No, the retail version is DRM-free and does not force you to use Steam or any other online platform. If you purchase a digital copy, once you've downloaded the game, you will not need to be connected to the internet to play it. The same applies for the physical retail copy.

  • How do I transfer my savegames/plot-choices from the previous Witchers?
On PC, if you still have your saves, they'll be imported automatically. On PS4, X-box One, or if you no longer have your PC saves, an in-game conversation with a special NPC will allow you to recreate your story decisions from the previous titles.

This is a good thread. Especially because it's in the Witcher 3 subforum, as most people don't see that PC thread in that other subforum.

Another couple of frequently-asked questions for you...

Does the retail version of the game use Steam or GOG Galaxy for installation?
No, the retail version is DRM-free and does not force you to use Steam or any other online platform.

Does the Collector's Edition include any addition game content, such as DLCs or the Expansion Packs
No, the DLCs announced are free for everyone who buys the game, and the Expansion Packs must be bought separately.

Just a friendly reminder, for future replies, please try to limit submissions specifically to questions and answers, so we can keep the thread tidy and manageable. Thanks.

Excellent idea. Redpoint for you (I wish I could give two). This should be pinned to top to help prevent all the unnecessary threads.

I thought of a question that is repeatedly asked in the maps thread that has already been answered at least a half dozen times:

How big is the World of the Witcher 3: Wild Hunt?

The game world will be a multi-regioned open world environment. The three main regions are Novigrad, No Man's Land, and the Skellidge Islands with 5-6 other smaller areas. Two of the smaller locations that have been mentioned thus far are Kaer Morhen and White Orchard. Acording to information released by CDPR, Novigrad and No Man's Land are together 72.5 km2 and the Skellidge Islands are 64 km2. So world will be at least 132.5 km2 (52 square miles). That is approximately 3.5 times larger than Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

It will be as soon as RivenII says it's ready...

And he's probably finding out right now how impossible it is to get people to do this:

Here is a few questions. I don't have time to answer them all because I have to leave for work.

This one gets asked on the Steam forums a lot.
How common is nudity in The Witcher 3? Is it possible to avoid nudity by not visiting brothels and, if not, is there a way to censor it?
There will be nudity in important story cutscenes in The Witcher 3 including story cutscenes in the first few hours. As far as we know, there will be no option to censor nudity in The Witcher 3 except by skipping cutscenes.

EDIT: Okay. Here is an official source for this answer. http://www.pcgamer.com/cd-projekt-explains-why-the-witcher-3-has-16-hours-of-sex-scene-mo-cap-data/

I really liked Elder Scrolls Skyrim and/or Dragon Age Inquisition. Will I like The Witcher 3 too? How is The Witcher 3 comparable to those games?

I played The Witcher 2 and I didn't like it. Should I play The Witcher 3?
The Witcher 3 is taking extra special care to introduce new players to the world and characters of The Witcher this time around. It also has a rebalanced difficulty curve and a completely new combat system that takes inspiration from games like Arkham Asylum and Dark Souls. If you played The Witcher 2 and did not like it is possible you will like The Witcher 3 much better.

I'd suggest pointing them to an existing thread for this one, rather than trying to answer it directly in the FAQ. Maybe also for the third one.

Indeed, FAQ should have official answers only, rather than opinions. Preferably with a source attached.

Some of this seems like it could end up being a thread directory. It would be neat, but cumbersome.

A question I've seen popping up often:

Why is the price different in my country in comparison with other countries? Why has the price varied in my country over the last few months?

The reasons behind this are usually economic and beyond CDProjektRED's control. Typically, the distributor determines the price for a game. [SOURCE]
A thread discussing the specifics of this topic can be found here: [insert link here]

It could be linked to the explanation at GOG, I guess...

are you sure about that? how would the xbone know what you did on your 360 with a different game?

Yup, I think it's safest to leave this as "PC".

I approve.

As for the question with Steam and GoG, I have heard many people asking if they are able to activate the retail version on Steam if they WANT (sad, isn't it? anyway...). Maybe you can add that bit of information.
Good idea this thread.

why there is no spanish voice over?
is tw3 connected to tw2? i want to know what happens to the character after the end
do the expantions need the main game or are they stand alone?

I'll see what I can find about the Spanish voice-over. As to the fps questions, perhaps @GuyNwah, who's been very active in the PC requirements thread, could address whether we can estimate frame-rates with any certainty?

It looks like the GTX 980 will be good for 60 fps at whatever Ultra ends up being, and the GTX 970 will be only fractionally short of it. Assuming a good CPU.

Spanish voice is a touchy subject. No matter what the Mexicans or Argentines or Spanish say, there isn't a central Spanish you can do voice in and make everybody happy. And the biggest Spanish-speaking market for games is Mexico, which accepts or even prefers English with Spanish subtitles.

I've added an answer about the comparison with Skyrim to my main list, but, since I never played that game, my treatment of it is fairly minimal. If anyone would like to address the general contrasts between the two titles, go ahead; however, try to keep it succinct, and please avoid expressing strong value judgments on specific features. I'd also appreciate any feedback on my answer to the question as well. Thanks

As I was curious if there was some movement changes in Witcher 3, I found:
http://www.pcgamer.com/the-witcher-3-gameplay-features/

Where it says, “The monster-slayer apparently hit the gym after The Witcher 2 wrapped up, as he now adds climbing and jumping to his movement abilities.”

But this article was from 2013, so I don't know.

(I really disliked how you would have to click the mouse button to activate a climbing animation or jumping over something in the Witcher 2 game.)
