My guess is prolly medium settings....what does everyone else think?

Medium should not be a problem. I get medium out of a similar rig. You might find overclocking your CPU helpful. Those Wolfdale CPUs can take a decent overclock even on stock cooling.

NO. Do NOT visit that site if you want an accurate assessment of whether you can run the game.

The number of people who come here claiming that "Can you run it" told them they could run this game when there are good reasons why they cannot, and the site is wrong, is just appalling.

Removed the whole post, always worked fine for me, really, never had a problem with this site but ok :)

Btw i noticed that TW2 can have quite some GFX bugs if you have an ATI video card, i run the game on ultra but sometimes strange things happen, up to the point of iorveth dissapearing in a quest and coming back at a cutscene
So that could also be a problem :)

I was running it on an ati HD5770 with no problems and in Ultra high, blur was disabled along with one other thing that i forgot what it was. Most everything else was cranked up to the max though.

1)i think I should be ok with low settings

Vista 32 bit

Intel E2160 1.8ghz overclocked to 2.7ghz

EVGA nforce 780i (socket 775)

4gig DDR2

Nvidia GeForce GTS 250 1gig

850 watt PSU, Corsair I think

2) I could use some input on decision whether to upgrade or build new pc. I built her a few years ago and was considering upgrading CPU to quad core but not sure if it is worth upgrading at this point. If I upgrade I would essentially have to upgrade OS (windows7 64 bit), CPU, HD (current one only 250gig), and Video card though I could do it in stages yet I'm not sure if it is worth it. After replacing all of the above it might be more cost effective to build new one with more current components.

Thanks in advance

Hello everyone,

I'm looking at upgrading my graphics card, i'm looking at a Geforce GTX 550 TI, is it that good? will it run the witcher 2 in high settings?

My PC specs

Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550 @2.83 Ghz
RAM: 4 GB ( 2.99 USABLE )
Win 7 Ultimate 32-bit
Geforce 9400GT ( Which im upgrading pretty soon due to massive lag )

Thanks alot

You mean GTX560ti?

I got a 560ti (Asus factory-OCed), runs the game really nice on ultra minus uber...

There is also a 550 Ti. It's a rework of the 450 and neither high performance nor good value. Get a 460, 560, or 560 Ti instead.

Just dumped the 9400gt myself went with gt 440 from pny because of my power supply only being 300w good card loud fan though . Can play ultra minus uber slow frames at 1600 x 900 but smooth choosing quality over performance . The card your looking at is good seeing how your moving from 9400gt (300w minimum card )What is your power supply ?

If you're sincere about having an open mind, I implore you to avoid the 550! For gaming, I would advise you on starting with a X60 and up. In other words, 460/560, 470/570, etc. Anything under the X60 line isn't really meant for gaming unless it's extremely casual gaming. Yes, they can and will play games, sometimes even at seemingly high settings, but with always some sort of important compromise, such as low(er) resolutions. You will regret not going with at least a GTX460! And mind you, you would think that that a 550 would at least be on par with a 460, but that's not the case at all!

And by the way, the 460/560 would match your current hardware nicely! But anything more powerful would probably give you very marginal benefits, so my final recommendation is a 460 (1gb version), or the 560 Ti.

I said this before and I'll say it again:

I believe at the moment the GTX 560 Ti is the best deal out there, with a very high performance/price ratio. Go ahead and try to get a factory overclocked card like an EVGA or MSI.

Keep in mind these cards recommend a 500w power supply with at least 30 amps in the 12v rail.

Don't get GTX 550 if you can, get a GTX560 ti. Because GTX560 ti is roughly two times faster than GTX 550.

Get GTX 560ti, if you can afford it.

Thanks alot for your replies, i read through them all. i just checked with the store that offered me a GTX 550 ti, it's a Galaxy Technology GeForce GTX 550 2 GB.

Although after reading all your replies i think i'll be going with GTX560 ti, and for those who asked about my power supply i really don't have an idea but after the store checked my system they said i need to change the power supply in order to get the GTX 550 ti working on it.

should i be looking at a specific brand? i really have no good information about graphic cards but i've read that each graphic card have diffrent brand such as ASUS or Galaxy ...etc

thanks again

Edit: is there a way i can check my power supply ?

Best way to check the power supply is open the case and read the label.

If you post at least the make and model here, we can figure out whether you really need a better power supply, or whether the salesman was trying to upsell you.

(The GTX 560 Ti is 170 watts TDP. That's a lot more than either the 9400 GT or the 550 Ti.)

Basically, you can go with any of the big manufacturers - Asus, Club 3D, EVGA, Gainward, MSI, Zotac. Personally, I'd get a MSI-card with the Twin Frozr fan, it's cool and quiet.

As for the power supply: If you'd have to upgrade it for the 550, you'll have to do it for a GTX560 Ti, too. Don't be too closefisted, when buying a power supply - it's probably THE most essential and potentially harmful (if low-quality) part of the PC. Seasonic and especially Enermax are my personal favorite manufacturers for PSUs.

Other PSU makers relabel Seasonic power supplies and sell far more Seasonics at retail than Seasonic does themselves. Corsair (TX and HX models) and Antec (recent Neo, Truepower, and "High Current" models) are the biggest. Shop around for the best deal: Corsair and Antec discount aggressively; Seasonic tries to maintain high prices for PSUs sold under their own name.

I'm going to second your suggestion for MSI. MSI has done some creative and good things with GPU coolers. Both the "Twin Frozr" and the "Cyclone" coolers are excellent.

I don't like to recommend brands because it's hard to be objective - what I will say though is stick with brands that have an over-all solid reputation, such as Gigabyte, MSI, EVGA, etc. Let the price determine which one you buy when it comes to choosing between those brands. Marketing aside, you're almost always getting the same quality, reliability and functionality with those brands.

As for PSU, that's the one single thing I 100% always recommend that you base it on brand and price. Do not, ever, get a used PSU, or store-brand, or a cheap one. If you get a PSU being installed at a store, insist to see the box that the PSU came in before the technicians installed it, and also insist on seeing the label on the PSU before you take your PC home. I know of computer shops where they do not install what the customer ordered... Enough said. You would be amazed, simply amazed, how stupid (yes, stupid) those people truly are who cut corners with inferior PSUs. I especially love the stories about how they try to justify a cheap PSU by saying that they won't ever need a lot of power - but the Wattage rating is really a minor detail relative to the quality of components and type of certifications which are the most important things. Yes, get a minimum of 600W PSU, but also look for user feedback. Even if you don't order from newegg, it's a good place to go and see feedback on any given product. With PSU, only get one with a 5 or 4-star rating (you can filter on there by best rating), and always remember that a solid PSU will last you a long time, while a cheaper one will not, and it comes with inherent dangers, up to and including being a fire hazard! No joke.

Great choice for you -> http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139005

Good recommendations. But you've forgotten one other thing. Case air flow. Not saying you'll have a heat problem, BUT...IF you do, then look at your air flow thru the case. Upgrading to a bigger PS and Vid card is going to increase the heat in your case. In most situations, good air flow thru your case will solve "above average" heat problems. (i.e. adding fans, coolers, etc.) I'm running a Corsair 950TX PS (single rail) and GTX460 in a Cooler Master mid-case with 7 case fans. No heat problem ;)

Hehe, wow - 950W!!! That is crazy, but very nice choice! Actually, I remember 2 or so years ago when everything was hotter than they are today - point in case, my Phenom II produces less heat though clocked higher than my first Athlon X2! And don't even let me get started with my GTX 275, which when under load was burning at around 92C! In contrast, my Fermi today maxes out at just shy of 63C when under load, and that was during summer. But yeah, airflow is an important factor these days also, especially one good side fan blowing right onto the GPU/mobo! Makes a notable difference.
