You may have misunderstood. I said that I have played The Witcher 2 on PCs with no more CPU power than yours, without lag. So no matter what you may have found with other games, you should not blame poor performance in this game on the CPU, and replacing the CPU will be an expensive undertaking that may have no benefit at all.

Part of your problem may be that you have a power supply that is already underpowered for the 550Ti. Graphics cards with an underpowered supply are a little unpredictable. They may refuse to start, or not run at full speed, or fail.

I see... Now that makes sense why... I'll inform my mates about it. Thanks.

Nvidia updated the GeForce 8400 GS card. My computer now runs the beginning intro of the Witcher 2 perfectly, with no lag. Link is here. Haven't played the game with the new driver yet.

Hey! I just finished the first Witcher game and im really eager to try the next one. however, im not sure about my laptop, will it be able to run it. the specs are -
Processor: i3 M380 @2.53GHz
Ram: 4GB
OS: 64bit win7
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GT 630M

I ran Skyrim some while back, and it worked almost without lagging, but the Witcher seems a bit more demanding when it comes to hardware. Any thoughts?

Also, are there any moods or something that lowers the effects and graphics so the game is playable on older machines?

Except for the graphics card which is kinda low for the game everything else looks ok . Not saying you can`t run it but if you do it will be on low specs and definitely not in full HD but more like 1280 x 720 screen resolution or lower .

I just bought Witcher 2 collectors edition, I'm 2 years late to the party.

Below is my current rig

Processor Intel® Core I5 760 2.8GHZ
Graphic: HIS 5870 1GB iCooler V
Ram: Kingston 2GB DDR3 1333mhz x 2
OS: 64bit win7

I highly doubt my rig can play Witcher 2 smooth like a hot knife through butter on high settings much less max settings with everything on.

Any recommendations on a rig that can play Witcher 2 smoothly on max settings with everything on ?

Sorry to respond late. You should do well on High or Ultra settings, with the exception of the expensive features Ubersampling and Cinematic DOF. You may not want to run Motion Blur, either (just because it's ugly).

The GPU is key to getting good performance out of TW2. The HD 5870 is better than the "recommended" GPUs for this game and has a good record running it.

Because Intel broke compatibility between Nehalem and Sandy Bridge, there is no upgrade path for the CPU without replacing the motherboard. Your CPU and memory are adequate as they are; your CPU will be lightly loaded, and the game doesn't use more than 2GB memory for itself.

lets say i wanna build a new rig so that i can play smoothly on ultra settings with ubersampling? consider it as future proof for witcher 3.

Any recommendation ?

@ Swordsman83 - It is obvious that gaming is in the cards for your build, so the next question would be, What is your budget?

First, the driver you linked to is the wrong driver. Second, THe 8400GS is NOT a gaming card. It is only 64 bit and you should have at least 128bit for gaming. I had one and in fact, tried to run "The Witcher" on it. It was a no go and I can tell you that "the Witcher 2" will not even come close to playing on that card. In my case I bought an 8600GT and that did fine.

$2.5k is my budget.

my friend got SLI gtx 680 and ubersampling totally crippled his system..

Hello

I bought this game some days ago, and it lags horribly, even on very low settings.

My specs are:
Processor: Intel Core2 Quad Q9300 @ 2.50GHz
Graphic: Nvidia Geforce 9600 GT
Board: Asus P5E3 Deluxe
Os: Win-7 32bit

Now, this should run it without much problem, I gathered from checking sites, but it doesn't. So I am thinking about upgrading one of these parts, and my question is; which part is the lacking one here? Which one should I upgrade to get a lagfree witcher 2 experience?
Thank you!

Your GPU is the bottleneck. TW2 is a very GPU intensive game. Depends on your budget but for around 100€ I'd get AMD 7770/7790/6850 or Nvidia GTX 650 Ti/GTX 460 (or a similar card). I recommend to check used GPUs, you could get a 6850 for ~60-70€.

You may want to post details of your power supply as well, before you go out and replace the graphics card. It may limit the choices available.

As I am completely ignorant to this stuff; what is the power supply? Or rather; power supply to which parts? If to the GPU, how do I check that?

Thank you very much for the quick and informative answer. I was stuck and had given up, but I do really want to experience this game, so thank you!

Your PC power supply. Looks like this:
Just open the side panel of your case and you should see it. Take a picture of the sticker on it for example. If your PSU is small you may want to buy AMD 7750 or a similar low-power card. Have you tried playing on the lowest settings and lowering your resolution to, say, 1280x720 (or something like that)?

Right, thank you. It would seem to be a supply with 500W as max, but I took a picture of it.

picture:

I have tried to play in the lowest settings possible (down to 800*600), but it still lags to much for me (Gerard stutters when he walk, all the time). So a new GPU it is.

Thank you so much for the help, I really appreciate it.

The 5450 is the problem. The practical minimum GPU is a 5570, which is twice as fast.

"Silent" models of the 5450 are also prone to overheating. But any 5450 is too slow.
