So doing side-quests is not "roleplaying" because...?
In Cyberpunk the side quest stuff is equally relevant to the character as the main story. Probably more so, since you get to make more decisions that actually do something (at least that's the feeling I got).
For the simple reason that, once you had discovered that you were dying, nothing else would be of importance to you other than finding a solution and saving your life.
Nobody, in reality, is going to waste their time doing odd jobs for people when the clock is ticking for them. Not unless they were a bit dim. "Oh, what? I've only got a week to live and urgently need to find a cure? Ah, never mind, I'll go help my neighbour fix their fence...". It's not really going to happen, is it.
So, from a pure roleplay perspective, from The Heist onwards, side jobs and gigs are now going to be an irrelevance to V.
There's nothing to stop you from doing all of them, as the player. But that just gameplay, and because you can.
Um what? What kind of comparison is that? If your question is if I allow myself to immerse myself into the game narrative and roleplay in a RPG game, then yes. My answer is yes.
Comedy makes no sacrifice of character... which is to say, it was a trite and curt comparison meant to amuse some and potentially bemuse others. Hate God... He gave me my sense of humor.
Maybe the joke plane flew too far overhead?
Either way, I'm 60hrs in and feel like I'm behind. I'm getting pulled down every side alley for every Side Job and Assaults in Progress are simply unavoidable for me.
I went NOMAD and decided not to worry about a Min/Max build and just put points into how I've been playing the game. I'm a stealth sniper who shoots ONLY AS A LAST RESORT... or if any Main Quest, Gig, or Side Job villain messed with kids... then its American Psycho time!!
Can you imagine people sitting down to play a game with a stop watch at the ready to time the main story line? Wow... what a way to be immersed in an experience....
Hell... I remember when a solid 8hr story mode was par for the course. 19 hours seems generous to me, especially if FREE DLC is forthcoming. Then again, when one is truly immersed, its easy for Side Jobs and Gigs to become the Main Story, at least, for a spell.
If you haven't come across the Side Job were the father/son duo are peddling some heinous BDs, I won't spoil it for ya, but the depth and parallels in that narrative are subtle to the uninitiated, but scream out to those with eyes to see and ears to hear. Breathtaking story telling.

I don't know about you, but I play games to ESCAPE reality. The fact that I can 'ho-hum' impending doom while helping a little ol' lady get her cat out of a tree for some Street Cred and Reflex Exp allows me that escape.

Well we clearly have different taste in comedy then. Because I still don't get what you're on about.
And it's nice that you can ignore the main story. I personally couldn't. And when NPC's literally tell you to "Hurry the fuck up", it feels a bit immersion breaking when I go. "Oh wait... let me first do this gig for change cash that has no importance or relevance to my terminal condition."
And noone is timing the game with a stop watch. I played my first playthrough with a very comfortable tempo. Planning to experience as much as I can in Night City. Except... i didn't like the fact that I was dying and a big mouthed arsehole is making me cough up blood hourly and commenting on stuff I do. So I was lead to believe that if I progress in the story, I will be able to explore more of the game without that annoyance. God how wrong I was. After finishing my first playthrough I couldn't start up the game for a whole week because I was just so dissapointed.
19 hours story is shameful if you ask for an RPG that has a linear, player agency free story. It's a scam really. Even though the animations and voice acting were superb. And sorry, you do realise free DLCs mean extra clothing models and probably cars, not actual story content.
Story is going to be added as paid expansions.
When I found out that the story in Cyberpunk 2077 will last 20 hours, I was happy. Really!
It seemed to me that this would be a very short story, but VERY variable and branched. It would be just perfect! Instead of a long and linear game, get a short, but very replayable with a bunch of unexpected forks that change everything.
But no.
The СDPR deprived us of everything at the same time. The story turned out to be both short and linear.
Seriously, I don't know how to defend this game. How to protect it from people who compare it to GTA?
We could tell them - hey, you're wrong! We don't have a GTA clone, we have a non-linear and deep RPG!
But I just can't say that! Because it will be a lie!

I can appreciate anyone's assessment and experience. I suppose for me, I had no expectations. I was intentionally avoiding all the hype, news, reviews... etc.
Of course, some of the info slipped in. I started hearing how it was bombing on last gen consoles, which actually fueled my decision to pick it up sooner, rather than later. I guess I kinda wanted to weigh in on the drama while keeping my promise to back CDPR's next title after the Witcher 3 was such an epic experience for me and many, many others. Game is still worth full price to this day!
At any rate, it always sucks when we pay for something and don't get what we anticipate. I'm sorry that has been your experience with this game. I'm not sure its something a patch could remedy though. You seem like you're dissatisfied with the overall depth and breadth of the the main story so, without entirely rewriting the script, I'm not sure that CDPR can fix this to those standards. I mean, they'd have to pull Keanu back in for voice overs for starters.... all that motion capture....
That being said, is your overall experience a complete loss? or was there at least some iota of entertainment found within the hours you've logged?
The game is full of choices that don't affect anything. At the beginning of the corporate prologue, when I started playing this game for the first time, I very thoughtfully chose all the answers and all the options. In V's office, her colleague is sitting, who asks what to do with an agent embedded in a foreign corporation.
And I actually sat and thought what to say? How could my answer influence the story? Should I risk my agent's life? How will this affect the plot?
But NO! THERE WILL BE NO CONSEQUENCES! ALL YOUR CHOICES DO NOT AFFECT ANYTHING!

Don't get me wrong. My very first playtrough was amazing with the game. The reason why I went through the story so fast is because I was so immersed in it and so invested that I wanted to save my V. I was having a great time until experiencing the very ending.
That was my first slap on the face. And only then I started to read up on things and learn more about the game's shortcomings. I actually didn't follow any marketing leading up to release so I had no high expectations aside from the quality the Witcher series provided for me.
I love this game, I think it has a very solid fundation and I care for it's future deeply. That is why I am so active and loud on the forum.
Side quests does adds up in the ending and the peoples showing up putting some speech from all their sides and what options you did picked.Game is fine has a very good story and has its laughs and sad moments.
Most of the game i play out there as a single player where missing dozens of things as a good story and try to cover that up with good graphics or how good the mechanics are no need to say like fallout 4........anyway.
Game is good and its as big as you wanted to be.You want it big ? make it big.You want it short? sure ! roll out all the ending for achievements and then.served your self as you like.
Oh! And about the sidequests! They are awful. I just don't believe CDPR did them.
Everyone remembers the quest with the dude whose penis is on fire?
IT'S JUST LAZY! This is not a Witcher 3 level quest. This is GTA 5 random encounter level shit.
Witcher 3 wild hunt main story was 50 and half hours long. Main with extras 102 hours!
Cyberpunk after almost a decade working on the story main story is 19 hours main plus extra 48 hours. The main plus extras is shorter than witcher 3 main story lol.
That is absolutely pathetic dude. My source is how long to beat. Go see for yourself. Shame on you CDPR. All that dang hype for a 19 hour rpg story. Good god.
You are in a rush ain't you? First they are players whinge the main quest in The Witcher 3 takes forever, and now there are players whinging about how short the main quest in this game is. Jesus Christ smell the bloody roses take your time playing the game. Talking about JC I… I mean V just crucify someone in front of live TV last night (disregarding what V said about killing someone in front of people) and I could not take a pic of just in case the crunch takes a whiff of it, and they will whinge about it. A Julius Caesar crucify 60 pirates for kidnapping himself way before Jesus Christ was born.
I finished a main story line in 40+ hours, doing also side missions. The problem was that I was forced to do it by a glitch telephone bug (where you can't end a conversation in a call). During the main story line you only experience one or two gangs, but there are more already in NCity. I don't get this choice. Why the heck are devs making a lot of very specific fractions like 6Street / Valentinos but in the end they are not involved into the game?
Many resort to the trick of saying "you yourself complained that the main quest in The Witcher 3 was too long."
NO!
You can't just keep the story short and give nothing in return!
Nobody complained about the short story in The Witcher 2, because in return it was the most non-linear of all CDPR games. You always have to give something in return.
Or you're doing a long, epic linear story and the players love you.
Or very short, but deep and non-linear and the players are happy again.
And when you do both, short and linear main story with bad sidequests, you just spit in the face of gamers! And there is no excuse for that.

Which is absolutely fine. I'm not for a moment suggesting that there's a right or wrong way to play any game. You play it how you want to, and in a way that you enjoy. I was simply clarifying why pure roleplay would effectively render side quests and gigs as a low to zero priority.
The importance of roleplay is that you are only making choices that your character would make, based on their personality and circumstances, not what you, the player, would choose to do.
I had occasion to roleplay a hardbitten merc in Skyrim once. If he saw a bunch of bandits attacking a caravan, my reaction would be to rush in and attack the bandits. But he would just ignore it. It's not his problem, unless someone want to pay him to deal with them and make it his problem.
Ergo, I would do things with that character that I wouldn't with another. And vise versa. It also adds replayability when you tackle things from a different perspective each time. You don't have to do everything just because you can.
Ok, so having just finished the storyline and the game with it... and I was a bit on the wrong in page 1. The story is completely wrong for this kind of game.
The game wants to be played for hours. But there is a mismatch between what the game wants and what the story wants.
The story need not be 50+ hour long or anything - it could be 15 minutes if that's how the player chose. But what it would've needed, was influence from what all you did between the start and the finishline. In a way, in a game like this, you should be able to adjust the length of the story yourself through what all you do during your journey and the storyline should support that.
