Xbox 360 To The Temple problem

Hi, I don't know if it's a bug or I'm missing something.

I opened the door to the courtyards then moved back into the room with the locked grate which houses the gate mechanism.

I killed the various guards who appeared and got the key to the locked grate, opened it, span the gate mechanism, but when I go back to the courtyard the gate is still down and the men still chopping at it.

Is there another mechanism? If I return to the mechanism I don't get the prompt to press A to open it again.

Ok, I loaded a previous save and tried again and it worked.

The bug seems to be that if you kill the Guard who carries the key take the key and operate the gate mechanism before killing ALL of the other guards the gate doesn't open.
