Question:
Up to now communities are still discussing about your play in final's match, where in the first round you smartly used one leader's ability to lead by 6, outscore Kolemeon's potential Seltkirk play by 1 point. Can you please explain your thought during that play?
Wangid1:
that game is a disadvantaged match for me, because Ocvist really counters my deck. But the good news is that my opponent kolemoen did not bring cards such as Eyck that targets big units (Keep in mind that in final each player know's opponent's card list). Thus, my strategy is to force my opponent play Ocvist in the first round, if that's the case then I'm ok to lose first round. But kolemoen played really aggressively and tried to win the round with equal card advantage, each play he outscores me and then I counter play to outscore him by 6 point. till the last few cards left in hand, I started to read what card he has in hand.
First, I know it will not be a high tempo card. Second I know it won't be Botchling, otherwise it will be played by start of the round. Third I know it will not be Chironex, because I did not kill his unicorn on the board, if he has Chironex on hand he would already used it to kill my Griffin. Thus, the only left high-value cards in his deck would be Ocvist or Seltkirk. he didn't had a chance to play these earlier otherwise he will lose the tempo and will not be able to win first round with equal card advantage.
After my last card play I lead the score by 5 points. I think if this round ends with draw, the second round Kolemoen will play first, if it is Ocvist, I don't have an answer for it thus it would probably cost me the game. thus I used my leader's ability to raise my lead by 6, gambling that the last card he has is a 5 point card.
As I won the first round, I want to keep playing in the second round to get my opponent play his Ocvist. After I play Germain, Kolemoen will have to play his Ocvist otherwise he might directly lose the game 2:0. After he played his Ocvist, I calculated the points and don't think Glustyworp will have enough points to win this round, thus I passed.
In third round, one of the big question for me is to mulligan drowner or not. Because if my opponent does not have Seltkirk in his hand, Drowner would be just a 4-5 value card. But I think he has a higher chance to draw Seltkirk so I kept Dronwer. In the end I just won by 3 points, If I made just one mistake, to not use my leader ability in first round, or not to push in second round, or not keep Drowner, then it is almost certain that I will lose the game.
