Whats the little exclamation mark for on some items?

I've noticed it appears on a weapon and also clothing, its a little exclamation mark in a yellow circle.

What does it mean?

Seems to be on items you pick up to use in or finish a quest/mission, I have a few things in my inventory with this and they were all picked up in quests like the gun from the early mission in your towerblock.

Thanks and I wonder why we need to know that?

I'd guess it's just to flag it in the mission so you know it's important and just carries over once complete, took me a few visits to the gun shop for the mission before I noticed the one that had it cost no eddies to buy

I dknt think I've ever used the gun your speaking about. It still has an exclamation mark.

*Spoiler alert*
I have Skippy the Smart Gun with a hologram and Crash a revolver I believe I received from River both have exclamations

So I'm wondering what I can do with these exclamation weapons. I can't put them in storage and I due to encumbrance I like to keep my inventory neat.

I've found that you can't put these items into a stash or disassemble them. Presumably to prevent breaking missions associated with them.

It's mostly (i think) a bug. On my current playthrough. the sniper O-five got it when i found Skippy (so, it can appear at random?), and every pieces of Johnny's clothes has it too.
River's gun will have it when he gives it to you too, but it will loose the "quest" flag at the end of the mission.
I guess some script sometimes add the flag when it shouldn't (and don't remove it), or forget to remove it...

On the plus side, you can upgrade them and still keep a copy of it!
On the other hand, i now have a blue, a purple and an orange version of every pieces of Johnny's clothing with a sniper stuck in my inventory... It's starting to feel heavy x)

Edit: I'm not 100% sure O-five got it when i found Skippy, but i noticed it when Skippy took automatically my first weapon slot and i had to equip O-five again...
It may even explain HOW O-five became my "forever in your inventory" gun...

Like everyone says, its because they are involved in a quest. I think the fact that they are iconic or whatever and can be remade isn't necessarily connected to this but there is, they say, a bug relating to iconic items with this flag.

I haven't tried it yet because the crafting and upgrading options were so awful. I guess I won't be doing it this time, either. Damn it.

Could be worse, seen on Reddit a few people crafted Johnny's jacket a heap of times trying to get one with full mod slots and are now stuck with like 20 of them in their inv as you can't sell, dismantle or drop them

They are meant to replace the ones you have such that you could only have one of them. I bet the quest flag is preventing the scripts from deleting the old one when crafting a new one. Why they would be crafted with that flag is beyond me.

What does the little orange box above some characters mean? The one with 2 exclamation points in it. Is there a button to interact or do something?

Yeah, it has to be a bug. Because if that done on purpose. Your inventory could be screwed forever. It also be a way for a friend to troll your game.
