In the books, the sorceresses use various spells and don't seem to be tied to any element in particular. I think it's only dangerous for apprentices, since Yen herself used fire magic several times in the books.

Must be for gameplay pyrotechnics (slight pun intended). Is it ever hinted that any of the sorceresses favor a specific element or is just whatever you need in the moment to get the job done? I guess while I'm on this, I wanted to ask a couple more questions about Sapkowski magic: is it sort of an open ended magic system in that it isn't strictly defined by a set of rules (i.e elements/mind, etc.)? Is the only limiting factor energy? I guess that's all I can think of at the moment. I'm still working my way through the books, so maybe all these will be answered in time.

PS: I'm getting an X-Men "Storm" vibe from that Gwent artwork. Even her eyes have 'gone white' while channeling.

I always thought that drawing energy from an element was merely a way to collect power which they can then use to cast whatever spells they wanted. The elements are merely sources they can tap to charge themselves up.

Edit: Beat you to it, Vargeras!

As far as I've understood it, the element only matters when you draw the energy for your spell. What you do with the energy doesn't matter. So you could draw energy from the air and use that energy to cast a fireball.
So it's the drawing from fire as a source for energy with is dangerous.

Edit: just because I was more detailed!

Here's an excerpt from Blood of Elves:
“Why do we always draw the force from water veins? Magical energy, after all, is everywhere. It’s in the earth, isn’t it? In air, in fire?”
“True.”
“And earth… Here, there’s plenty of earth around here. Under our feet. And air is everywhere! And should we want fire, it’s enough to light a bonfire and…”
“You are still too weak to draw energy from the earth. You still don’t know enough to succeed in drawing anything from air. And as for fire, I absolutely forbid you to play with it. I’ve already told you, under no circumstances are you allowed to touch the energy of fire!”

So,yeah, she meant, that drawing the energy of fire is dangerous, not using fire itself.

Hey guys, I'm back!

I was delayed by a weird bug which says the forums are down but Roche and his special forces will fix them soon (and that was a week ago). It's still down but my wife's computer works just fine. Also, I've been working on advertising my recently released book: http://www.amazon.com/The-Rules-Supervillainy-Saga-Book-ebook/dp/B00ZA9U8T4

Anything amazing in the eternal feud of Triss and Yennefer happen while I was away?

Some semi-bait posts that were threadlocked. Things have calmed down since then and so far it seems like the deluge of passion has passed and moved on to other things, like discussion on the endings, post-epilogue stuff (heh), and whatever else is the flavor of the moment.

Well, that's good.

I'm re-reading Blood of Elves and there's a lot of cool stuff about the Triss and Yennefer romance.

Geralt says, "She's my favorite mistake" basically.

But a mistake nonetheless.

Question: is there any reason why Yennefer prefers black and white clothing? Is this ever explained? Is she like Johnny Cash in that she wears it for the downtrodden? Kidding. I guess it could just be an aesthetic thing to go with her hair color, but I was curious.

Me too, I wonder why sometimes.

But if we speak in terms of facts, black and white is a symbol of elegance, class and power back in the medieval age. Until this day, black and white is accepted at almost all functions (regardless of the formality). I have no idea how to relate it with Yennefer. Maybe the word elegance and class is the closest description synonymous with her? :)

I don't recall there being a reason given in the books. It's just like her always wearing that signature Lilac and Gooseberries perfume, she just likes it.

It's like Geralt's so conscious of that perfume that she is able to use it as another means to wrap him around her finger. Pretty sure she enjoys using her power like that.

Like above, I think it's a way for her to make an impression. Think branding or a signature look. She wants to stand out (like most sorceresses) and it's something she uses to be memorable.

The reason for this was never mentioned in the books.I guess the contrast of black and white just suits her personality very well, since Yen herself is full of contrasts and contradictions.

Make's sense. I mean, we all have our own signature looks/habits/impression as well.

Today I'm posting fan art by Len - this is my favourite part from the books...(if you've read them you won't have a problem to recognise this :) )
