You guys are getting BDs all wrong... Even CDPR it seems.

You ever notice the arcade machines around town? The pachinko games? These exist for atmosphere (yay the 80s and the death of arcades) but also for another reason...

They're example of how stunted gaming has become. No, seriously, think about this. Think about the world you live in *right now* and how ubiquitous gaming machines are.

Yet... you never see *any* hint of gaming outside of the stated above.

Why? Because of BDs. All the games are on BDs.

Or should be. Consider what this means for modders... Creating a "mod" to your game that allows you to play an entirely different game in the game.

You could be Iron V. Or Captain V. Bat V. Super V. Things V couldn't do via tech she could do via BD.

If a porno BD editor in a basement of a digital whorehouse can edit BDs to that degree there's absolutely no reason why a BD couldn't be created that allowed you to "play" it in the same vein as one might experience it.

BD's are the second worst aspect of this game but follows closely behind driving. Absolutely hate BD's and their implementation. It wouldn't be so bad if they left room for human error but no, you have to be perfect to be released from one of those things. No fun at all!!! And the millions and millions of cut scenes just suck the play right out of this game.... The most expensive movie in my gaming library! If there was a way to skip all BD's I would take it every time!!!

I don't think a BDs could be games :)
Only because you have no control at all on the "action". You "live" moments lived by another person. The only control you have it's play/pause/foreward/backward (or a litle more but in edition mode... not available for everyone).
So a game where you have no control, it still a game ? Maybe not :(
(but it remain my opinion)

Wow, I LOVE the BDs, and how they're implemented. So, each to their own I guess.

"The BD" of this game is basically a glorified "Pseudo Detective Mode" & not even that frequently featured to the overall CP2077 experience. Yes, it's one of the form of application but CDPR clearly under utilized the true potentials of THE REAL BRAINDANCE in this world/lore.

I recently designed/conceptualized a new feature mode/DLC thread that nobody reply (LOL). Something that could easily be like some kind of "Total Recall-esque BD" application. Here it is:

NIGHT CITY RUNNERS
Basically a Cyberpunk Red Roleplay mode with some rogue-like elements & storytelling.

There were also my post/threads that go deep into the kind of BDs that could featured inside the game:

Types of BDs
Ideas for Mini Game BDs (also no reply LOL)

In the end, this is just one of the cases of CP2077 half assed features or what most people called it possible missing contents, regardless its intentional or not.

Who says that video games as how WE know them still exist in CP77?
Remember that the world of CP77 is owned by greedy corporations. The 'return' of arcades and outlaw of console based games would make sense in the way that you'd have to pay at a parlor to play a game. Then some corpo comes around to collect the cash.

Not saying it couldn't be done via live subscriptions or anything. but then you'd need to have a device for that and I'm not sure that is the case.
The way I see it is that video games via an arcade machine are the easiest to collect by corpo's.

BDs as I understand them are basically glorified movies as seen through the eyes of others. Basic functionality seems similar to a DVD player really. Only the net/edgerunners or BD artists seem to have extensive abiities to edit BDs, but not the general populace.

This anyway is how I come to understand/interpret it.

Gaming in games!
The simple answer is that people are too busy trying to survive in the streets and going to sex club to understand the joy of pressing buttons and watching the screen.
But if you look at the game's trailer, you can see that, in one of the videos, a kid is shown to be playing a game in a VR headset. That, and the fact that "No Life 3" is mentioned in a shard as a video game. Even there's a poster of it in V's apartment!
So I guess gaming can still exist in these cyberpunk worlds, only that here in CP2077 they probably decided not to implement gaming in a game....

Plot twist for the next story DLC: V was living a BD experience since the first minute of the game.
That would be lovely, if V could just jack out because their holo rang.
Caller: Jackie Wells. "Woah, V. You get any sleep? Uh, no matter. Time you got up. Put on some threads, meet me downstairs. I've got a job for us."
"Not from Dexter Deshawn, I hope."
"Dexter who? Uh, you play that stupid game again? No, from Padre, of course. Come on, move it, he's waiting."

You might be mixing BD's with AR here. BD's are not interactive, they allow experiencing pre-recorded experiences. What comes to virtual reality, those are AR, (Alternate Reality?) AR game (Trouble in Heywood) is what V and River with Joss's kids.

AR is also used in tutorial "Practice Makes Perfect" that V gets from Jackie in V's car before "The Rescue".

AR, (Alternate Reality?)
AR = Augmented Reality. You're spot-on with your difinition, though. Braindances are like movies, that involve more than your visual and auditory sense. You can smell, taste, feel everything, enhanced, way more intensive than in real life (BTL = Better Than Life chips in Shadowrun). That's why BDs are so dangerous AND impossible to really use in this or any form of game right now. (Although I would have loved to see CDPR try; like overlaying a short action sequence with a rapid heartbeat, highly enhancing optical and sound effects, leaving V breathing hard, shaken up, tired, enthusiastic, hurt,... after jacking out,...)
AR goes from navigation arrow overlays to your mentioned games. Also: advertisement. Holograms popping up in your headware / cyber eye retina while you walk through the city, with (more or less) personalized ads playing in your head, stores and restaurants try to lure you in, AR labels in your cyberware, weapons and clothes communicating with shops,...

Edit: I forgot, The "Practice Makes Perfect" training sequence takes place in VR (virtual reality) through your head ware. That's different from BDs, and it's not AR either.

Yeah, Augmented Reality that was and good catch about VR.

If anything, game should give more information what is what. Nothing wrong in suggesting things, but it would help if players could attribute their requests and build up their suggestions to features that game has. Something I was wondering months ago was connecting players in-game world and we could have VR-segment like "The Practice Makes Perfect" and that wouldn't make V join in Trauma team but just finding Trauma team VR-training shard and other option could be braindance, replay of trauma team mission gone wrong. VR and BD enable a bit different things and most potential in those I see offering insights to game world outside of logical path for V's story.

BDs are recordings. Their main appeal isn't interactivity but rather the lack of it. Games do exist in the Cyberpunk universe, including VR games. You even get to play one, and I wouldn't be surprised if we get a "game" DLC at some point. Maybe as part of the multiplayer.

bd is not like vr headset gaming. the "game" you can play like the combat tutorial at the start of the game is more akin to what you're talking about. bd is something else, and it is more of a sensory stimulation device rather than a fully interactive one. bds are probably used for jacking off and living vicariously through someone else kind of like vr headset porn or asmr or vlogs in today's age. it's a completelt different category of digital entertainment from games. in short, op is wrong about cdpr being wrong and apparently didn't pay any attention. AT ALL. in the game. another fake detail oriented "expert"

my only regret with bds is that they're baked content. you cant readily make bds with mods. i wanted to make all of the snuff porn bds in the game but it requires an entire mini game system with the editor programming back and forth, multiple layers, customized level loading, etc. i think with red tools i can still make rudimentary bds, but they will probably not have the same level of detail in the layers like the sound or the temperature layer. the hard part is really loading the customized scene/map baked with bd content
