    Ludonarrative dissonance

Here is where Johnny Silverhand became a liability. They had to work him into every quest, so they game won't function without him. Imagine if you had the whole map at the start (or maybe if the lockdown lifted after a couple early missions). You then had to build up 'reputation' by doing...

What game are you currently playing

Also back in Skyrim. Installed some new quest mods so I have some new adventures to go on (a Wheel of Time based one and some 'book' quests). Imagine if CDPR offered that kind of mod support for this game by releasing an actual functioning toolkit...

    Ludonarrative dissonance

If they had just said you have a month to live, that would have been a different story. What they said is 'You have a very limited amount of time to find a cure, and these are the things to do to make that happen." If a doctor told me that I might live if I get to the Mayo Clinic quickly, I'm...

    Patch 1.5 & Next-Generation Update — list of changes

You can't copyright a game mechanic. Theoretically you could patent one, if it was original enough. Mechanics are copied from one game to another all the time, and not just in video games, but board games, tabletop RPGs, etc..

    6 month game retrospective...lets talk

The "secret" to Skyrim's success is the modding tools Bethesda releases along with each Elder Scrolls. They not only let people modify elements of the base game, but create entirely new content: new areas, new quests, new NPC's, etc... The people still playing Skyrim aren't playing the same...

What game are you currently playing

Dragon Quest Builders 2 now that it came out on Game Pass. Working through Code Vein off and on, too.

    Street Cred needs an overhaul.

There are many gameplay reasons to limit the starting area. It gives the player a chance to learn the systems in a more controlled environment, while also introducing the story in a somewhat structured way. Some other examples that do this: Breath of the Wild Xenoblade Chronicles Dragon Quest...

To anyone still in doubt: CDPR said they'll continue working on the game, so it can sell for years

Taking a risk isn't automatically something to be praised. If you take a risk and fail, then your project is a failure. It's funny how gamers should be familiar with the risk vs reward concept, yet seem to forget that risky projects usually fail (if they usually succeeded, it wouldn't be a...

To anyone still in doubt: CDPR said they'll continue working on the game, so it can sell for years

Hypestorms are awesome. Tnat's how you get stuff done. I hope CDPR is able to fix the game and turn it into something close to what marketing promised. If not, all I can hope is that they go bankrupt. That may seem harsh, but unless and until a few big companies go under and some big...

[STORY SPOILERS] The Gripes and Problems with the Story

Video games can definitely be about nihilism. Yoko Taro is the master of that genre. Check out the Drakengard and Nier series for examples. I guess I've gone through the stages of grief and come to accept that this games main theme is futility. Nothing you do in the story matters. You never...

Patch 1.2 — list of changes

Very encouraging patch notes :) I've been waiting for this to jump back in and it looks like I won't be disappointed. Keep up the great work CDPR!

Romances: Disparity in quality and quantity

Not being a big deal to you doesn't mean it isn't a big deal to someone else. This is what people mean when they say their opinions are being dismissed. I'll just point out the obvious that the development of the romances seems to be in line with player breakdown. Conventional wisdom would...

How do characters feel about Doll Chips?? [SPOILERS] + [TRIGGER WARNING]

People are missing the forest for the trees here. The work dolls do and the doll chip process is bad. The fact that everyone accepts it is what makes it devastating. If people in the game were talking about how awful it was, we wouldn't have the dystopian world of Night City. The point is...
