[Spoiler Alert] About Dex Deshawn questline

Does anyone know if you can avoid Dex to kill you? So you can "delay" all the Jhonny thing? or this is a must be?
Basically i ask because i am exploring the city, and i have the whole city restricted, and if i want to unlock the rest, i must keep the questline, but i dont wanna Jhonny on my head while i explore it.
