Was last gen a mistake?

the harm was brought onto them by themselves

they said they focused more on the PC version, and assumed that it would work, with some tweaking, on consoles:
it also doesn't help that they released the game 2 years too early (knowing all the issues, they still released it)

Patch 1.2 won't do much at all, other than perhaps make the game not a crash-fiesta on consoles (and fix some bugs here and there)

Dunno, I'm torn because it gave me the opportunity to play a game that I love very much but at the same time, it's clear that developing a game simultaneously for multiple platforms perhaps proved quite difficult.

The game entered development prior to next-gen consoles, correct? So it stands to reason that it should be released on, and run at least as well as its other titles on those systems.

On one hand it's obviously a technically demanding game that likely had a somewhat troubled development; maybe the fallout for cancelling everything but next-gen and PC would have hurt CDPR moreso than the messy launch. Caught between a rock and a hard place?

I've been playing the game since launch day on a PS4 Slim, initially with its stock 7200rpm HDD and later with an SSD; whilst it has problems, imo it is nowhere near as bad as many make it out to be.

There's this video on it.

I think releasing it simultaneously on seven different platforms with the global crisis at hand while also having a limited QA team was a mistake.

I believe having a control platform, like the PC, release first and ironing out the major issues before going mainstream would have been more beneficial.

But financially speaking it would have been a hard sell to a board of directors who are mostly focused on the finance rather than player/customer experience.

It's a real shame, a lot of the back room decisions regarding the entertainment industry at large, in general, are based on statistics and focus groups rather than the product and the vision.

i heard rumors down the grapevine that the so called console gameplay trailer of the XB1 and PS4 shown way back then was "fake". turns out from what i pieced together cdpr used footage from a high end PC and simply "slapped" the words PS4 and XB1 footage on it. very clever might i add you got to give them credit for scamming us that good. almost as good as ACM.

The gameplay was not for the base PS4 and Xbox One, it was for the PS4 Pro and the Xbox One X, there was nothing fake about it, it runs as it's shown there with the framerate drops present included.

well it is still pretty "clever" in my book you gotta admire how great of a "con artist act" cdpr's marketing department did. would make gearbox and randy blush.

I disagree, it's called marketing.

They showed the game run on a PS4 Pro and an Xbox One X nothing less nothing more, the rest is whatever you want to interject in it.

They were wrong in not presenting the state of the game on the base consoles for which they firmly offered refunds to regardless of the time one spent on the game.

Which is not a standard industry practice even though it should be in the context of a game being perceivably unsuitable for it's expected customer experience, so I personally commend CDPR for doing so to their own detriment - having the game ultimately removed from the Playstation Store.

I cannot defend the practice, but I can at least partly credit the attempt at reconciliation.

It's basically holding a nuanced and balanced view of the situation without jumping to any hyperbole.

The game entered pre-production somewhere in mid-2016 after The Witcher 3's Blood and Wine was finished. So no, it did not enter development prior to old-gen consoles.

Yes and no.
Given that you currently can't buy a PS5, it probably was the right decision in the end.
But the PC version clearly suffers from it.

Here's my interpretation of the current situation in the form of a tournament bracket:

Management VS Vision: Winner: Vision
Scope VS Time ; Winner: Time
Nvidia VS Old Gen Consoles ; Winner: Nvidia
Sony VS Chip Crisis ; Winner: Chip Crisis
Greedy investors VS Fans ; Winner: Greedy Investors
Shit Storm VS CDPR ; Winner: Reddit
Moderators VS Fresh Forum Users ; Winner: Draconifors
Devs VS Depression ; Winner: Twitter-Likes
Cat VS Water ; Winner: Cat
Elon Musk's Cybertruck VS other DLCs ; Winner: Neon-colored Katanas

Good gawd yes. This should never have been sold on last gen. Only ridiculous greed could have inspired the move.

Or, and here's a thought, that they wanted to give the many, many, many people with last gen machines, still half their audience, a chance to try the game. Note - glitchy though it may be, there are many reports of playable experiences on last gen.

Had they not offered it, 2 things would have happened: 1. "CDPR is breaking promises! Liars!" 2. "Just let us decide for ourselves! I can't afford/find a PS5 anyway!"

There is no win here, other than a delay for everyone, which would have -also- led to the above two accusations/demands.

I think the question us whether they should have ever set ps4/xbone as an initial release date. Hindsight is 20/20 however ps4 players seem to say the level of bugginess was not acceptable.

So, they lost a lot of time, energy, and still were unable to deliver an acceptable product. Thats probably a definite miss, unless the %of people unsatisfied on consoles is grossly overated.

perhaps they should have done delayed release for consoles, and hired out the development to a console conversion specialist.
Or, they could have developed primarily for consoles and made pc a lazy HD port (as a pc player I am against this) like most console developers do.

but trying to build for pc, then downscale for base consoles at the same time apparently simply doesn't work.

And that ladies and gentlemen is the answer to this entire thread.

Not launching on old gen wasn't an option.

it was an option, its been done before. Porting a game to other platforms later happens all the time

Yeah, this is more of a thing. In hindsight, given the tech they were trying to hit, they should probably have announced Next Gen and PC only in 2019. Next Gen details were announced, when, in 2020? This seems impractical. PC only would have really been the gist and, again, this was not going to happen. Last gen consoles -were- the market until recently. Heck, still are.

Or seriously de-tune their ambition. Cut crowds, remove cars, shrink Night City, use loading screens (I think this was a big big issue and they should have just accepted loading screens between districts and the bigger buildings).

Not what happened though. 20/20 hindsight.
