Effects of exposing kids to virtual sex

Here you may discuss the possible consequences that arise for children who come in contact with sexuality in media like for example in video games (e.g. The Witcher). The topic derives its origin from this thread.

Good idea Demut, seems some people getting annoyed with the discussion. Not sure there much to talk about though. Dan has pretty much failed on all accounts to make or back up his point/worries.He keeps going back to porn but the game will not have porn. A topless woman is not porn and does not count as being addicted to porn.As I have said, Im Canadian and have been exposed to nudity and sex on public TV (late night CBC) since I was 6 years old (CBC use to run french films uncut back when I was a kid in the early 70s and on). Didnt rot my brain, Im not some mad rapist or devient. In fact it gave me a greater understanding of the whole issue. I gotta admit, while I know there is studies, im not going to look them up, but when you compare gun crazy America and all its troubles with youth violence and murder and assault and what not to countries like Canada, france, even Germany, its pretty clear sex doesnt rot your mind but violence at a early age make you more prone and willing at later stages of your life.I was watching my 9 year old nephew and his 6 year old neighbor freind play Star Wars Battlefront and they were so much more aggressive and violent in their speech then what my brother and I were at the same ages. And my nephew is no alpha male, not by a long shot! Hes very girlish in many ways but get him behind a violent video game and a whole new little person comes out, and it isnt all that appealing!I mean, if you bombbard your child with hardcore porn and other extreme thing, I could see that having a effect, but talking about sex or seeing a pair of breasts here and there. I truely doubt it has any negative effect on children and as I said, different societies seem to prove the point that virtual violence is far more damaging then virtual sex every will be.Sex is a natural activity between a man and woman and children should understand that!Violence is not a natural activity and children should also understand that rather then be virtually muted to it as American society seems to want to do.

I respectfully disagree. And in a world like ours, it's dangerous to teach children such fanciful tales. Spot on with the sex part though.

you could say that would fall under the Nurture/Nature debate I personally think its more a natural thing only we learn over the years to control it that all.But I will add this to the topic How many that committed act of crime where Sex was taboo in there family also I will add that not all Americans muted as one would think.

I'm afraid it would have made a nice topic, if not for one thing. It has already been discussed in the QTE and SEX 18 pages long discussion. One more thing discussions of this type of problems in forums are either ultimately biased, or come to a yes/no stalemate.

As much as I’d like that to be true I disagree as well. Restraining yourself is something that derived from society. If there were no laws and you’d be really pissed at someone you would probably serve him a knuckle sandwich. Look at other animals. When one of them acts up it gets to know the consequences. We are special in protecting the weak like that.

I can't believe this! You think that is more dangerous to show kids some boobs or two people hugging than showing how to slice someone's arm or head?Don't you think it's worse to see someone's brain on the floor than some vaginal hair?I think children should be always supervisored until certain age and not tabooing subject, rather explained. Of course, you can't 7 or 8 year old child explain where children came from or what mommy and daddy do in their bed at night, but try to understand how children sees things and try to come down on their level and not let them see what you don't want them to see.The point I'm trying to point out is sex and violence is everywhere. And unfortunately only thing that can help children in this is quality in parenting not banning or censuring!

I seriously doubt that computar games have any real influence whatsoever....children DO grow up faster recent years in western countries, but is it that bad? it used to be so for thousand of years so far, so....some biggots issues are mainly their problem.but. nevertheless. CG are not to blame for this, but:1.consumption culture = no time for children, sex sells, group bonds and family ties are weaker.2.bad diet. too much processed food and meat pumped with hormones. meat used to be food for warriors, workers, miners. not enough physical work/excercise. it all stimulates sex drive3.have I mentioned - sex sells? whole media sector, tv, press, magazines, even radio. advertising. selling sex to the youth (f.e. Disney?)...so, blaming CG for some boobs is like cursing 2nd officer for not buttoning up on Titanic.it`s just ridiculous. it`s irrevelant.change your corrupted hypocrite culture, then talk BS.p.s. you forgot violence.

It's a double standard, really. I mean, it's OK if kids play games where you get to kill hundreds of nameless NPC's in a variety of ways, but, God forbid, if you see a naked tit somewhere. Then it becomes a scandal. What more can I say?

People of all ages are bombarded with sexual and violent content throughout their lifetime. Games, movies, songs, television, books, advertisement, there's no getting away from the media in our world. But there's no conclusive evidence that shows exposure to sexual or violent content promotes bad behaviors. Some studies construe as much, but for every one that does there's another that proves a tendency towards such media being cathartic or having no effect at all.I always thought this comic got the point across well: http://www.shadowgirlscomic.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/03/Statistics.jpg
