You dont need to have dragon in your hand when playing Eyck to gain zeal. It works also when your dragon is already on the board and it shouldnt work like that because its a "deploy" ability.

That is exactly how it works, isn't it? If you are talking about your opponent gaining Zeal (without having dragon), it is possible through Ves or Drummer. But Eyck, without a dragon in hand doesn't get Zeal. May be the opponent played Foltest?
