System Shock 3 is announced

Sixteen years after cliffhanger ending of System Shock 2, original staff of Looking Glass Studios co-oped with a small publisher (Night Dive Studios) which consists of a true fans of franchise, and presents the new game in series.

Likely, it will require crowd co-funding, and won't be released until at least late 2017, since devs (Otherside Entertainment) are in the middle of production of Underworld Ascendant, next take on Ultima Underworld.

Cool. I also read somewhere that a small company acquired the rights to remake the first System Shock completely... wonder if they're the same people or not. I hope both of them retain the atmosphere (never in a game did I get the same atmospheric sound design as with SS2's sound of my own steps... and I only played it some one year and a half ago, so I'm not talking from nostalgia) and know how to update the gameplay while keeping it true. I'd be very interested in them retaining the same basic 3 classes from 2 which you can upgrade into your own custom hybrid, and for them to include a better way to change from normal weapons to psi powers that doesn't involve fiddling around with the inventory all the time to get that implant... also to make psi powers that are as cool as attracting things from the environment without it feeling too magical like turning items into currency or things like that (I think that was a power).

The timing isn't the best possible. They still have U:A to finish and if my experience with other Kickstarted games (by far bigger studios) is anything to go by, they'll be patching it for a good while after it launches.

That said, I hope they succeed and make a game that is humble to the original two and builds upon their ideas and concepts in an honest manner rather than going wild with trying to be "modern" and flashy through introducing "the new shit".

wouldn't a system shock 3 need a AAA budget to even get made? i mean i know there are people who are not the biggest fans of the bioshock games but i'm not sure if system shock can dial back on the production values of their game after the bioshock games came out

I hope that Night Dive have found/will find in next year-two some investors. Don't think that there'll be dozens of millions, but something reasonable for a level of quality estimated after previous games.

Anyway, waiting for their interviews after Monday, when counter on site will stop ticking.

The site has stopped ticking to reveal a picture of the new SHODAN

Along with a short voice clip. http://www.othersidetease.com/shodanaudio.mp3

It also might be Oculus Rift compatible, as one of the questions asked when signing up for their mailing list is "On a scale of one to ten, how much do you like the idea of VR?"

From their FB and forum responses I've learned some things:

- They are wanting to take experiments with narrative suited for VR (whatever it means), but everything could change. And it doesn't mean that it'll screw non-VR experience.
- SS3 now is at the same stage where CP77 was in 2012 with its announcement: very early pre-production, concept work, gathering feedback from fans. But, Paul Nerath was trying to get SS franchise rights even before Night Dive came on scene, so they have some vision of it for years.
- They are not even sure yet if there'll be any sort of crowdfunding campaign.

So glad to hear Terri Brosius' voice again, "insect" just guts me completely :)
