Cyberpunk 2077 — Our Commitment to Quality

+
If you think this game fully lived up to your expectations, that only tells us you really need to have higher expectations. If you ever buy a game where shooting water will make splashes it will blow your mind!

Cyberpunk does a lot of very pretty things like that with water, and far more on just an RTX 2070 - a two year old GPU.

My expectations were fully met and my mind blown - it is that awesome

Pre-production didn't start until mid-2016 when TW3's DLCs were done, so it's more accurate to say the game was made in 3.5 years, not 8.

Source.

If I hire someone to build a house, and they deliver it unfinished, I don't want to hear that they only decided to start work a few weeks earlier.

They had to have started with ideas before they even acquired the license, so they had AT LEAST eight years. The fact that they mismanaged that time is not a justification for failure.

Note: I'm not saying the game is a failure, but it is woefully undercooked. They had the time; they chose not to use it.

Bad analogy. No one commissioned them to make this game. They had no arbitrary deadline to meet except the one they set for themselves.

No, they didn't have eight years, they were busy making The Witcher 3 from 2012-2015 and TW3 DLC from 2015-2016. If you want to berate them for announcing the game 3.5 years before they actually started making it, that's fine and completely justified, but don't pretend like they had hundreds of idle hands to develop it during that time.

Note: I'm not saying the game is a failure, but it is woefully undercooked. They had the time; they chose not to use it.
They had time, yes, but not before 2016. The time they had to spare was after december 10, 2020. If they'd pushed the release date to december 2021, 2022 or even 2023, they'd have plenty of time to make the game they clearly wanted to make. The reason why they didn't was, as always, because of money. The 8th console gen was just ending and they wanted to capitalize on that huge market of console owners (150 million 8th gen units sold vs 10 million 9th gen units sold). Does that mean their decision was a good one? No, because any profits they made from selling the game on december 10, 2020 has been undercut by unprecedented numbers of refunds, massive losses in stock value and most importantly of all, the loss of consumer trust in their brand.

Kind of does, yep.

Not every person in the studio works on a game at the same time. Creating a game is like filling a pipeline. By 2014-2015 most of the programmers who worked on the Witcher would be free to work on the Cyberpunk engine and that makes more inexcusable that things like the physics (floating objects, random interactions with props and the terrain), the AI (what AI?) and many other aspects tied to the game engine are not working.

Regarding the delay of the game, I repeat here for the Nth time a concept that few seems to have grasped: CDPR grew in size and had to finance itself: it took in new investors and loans, and when you borrow money somewhere, you also have to devise a payback road-map. This game was originally announced for 2019, so CDPR was already one year late. For us gamers, one year more or less doesn't make a difference, but for investors and people who lent money IT DOES.

The truth is that the Cyberpunk videogame project appears to have been mismanaged from the start, shifting goalposts (it started as 3rd person game, then became first person - 2016), revising the story and priorities (2018 bigger focus on Johnny) and not being able to meet the deadline given not only to us customers but, more importantly to investors.

I am surprised people are still raging about this, especially considering the wide availability of refunds. I get that people are disappointed, but is is realistic to have an expectation that every game needs to work on your ancient tech? Perhaps developers should stop trying to make a new gen game compatible with inferior platforms altogether .. maybe then old gen playstation players will accept the need to upgrade

Many people have already played this through on pc as well as old and new xbox. It is already an excellent game. CD Projekt Red have provided several hotfixes and are promising more, as well as free DLC as they did with the Witcher.

There is no loss of their original reputation as far as I am concerned. They have done an excellent job and produced a compelling, complex game that fully lived up to expectations.

It's part of reality that we all view it differently.

I can only speak for myself and my impression of the general/overall reception of the game.

It really has nothing to do with rage, but simply my very honest response to what I'm seeing from CDPR. I don't need a refund, and I'm waiting for modders to fix the game, which I'm sure they eventually will.

As for your perception of their reputation (which, by definition, is something other than individual subjective views like yours and mine - but instead is about the combined audience) - that's fair enough.

I absolutely think you're 100% wrong if you think this hasn't SEVERELY hurt their reputation, but that's neither here nor there. We just disagree.

Have a nice day.

...and I'm waiting for modders to fix the game, which I'm sure they eventually will...

I hope the modders do fix it for you on PC. Sadly, however, console users like myself (base XB1) have to wait for whatever CDPR put out and call a "fix". Modders will probably end up making it like it was supposed to be for PC, whereas console users won't have access to it, and will have to put up with the CDPR version.

Hell, we haven't heard diddly-squat about patch 1.2 for ages, and there's only a little over a week left in Feb. But, going by 1.1, I doubt it'll change much for the better, or bring back any removed content.

FAQ

Q: Why is there such a gap between PC versions of Cyberpunk 2077 and old-gen consoles?

A
: Cyberpunk 2077 is huge in scope, it features a multitude of custom objects, interacting systems and mechanics. In the game, everything is not stretched out over flat terrain where we can make things less taxing hardware-wise, but condensed in one big city and in a relatively loading-free environment. We made it even more difficult for ourselves by first wanting to make the game look epic on PCs and then adjusting it to consoles — especially old-gens. That was our core assumption. And things did not look super difficult at first, while we knew the hardware gap, ultimately, time has proven that we've underestimated the task.

Q: What was the main issue that made development for consoles that difficult?

A
: The main culprit was having to constantly improve our in-game streaming system for old-gen consoles. Streaming is responsible for “feeding” the engine with what you see on screen, as well as the game mechanics. Since the city is so packed and the disk bandwidth of old-gen consoles is what it is, this is something that constantly challenged us.

Q: Didn’t you test old-gen consoles to keep tabs on the experience?

A:
We did. As it turned out, our testing did not show many of the crashes you experienced while playing the game. As we got closer to launch, we saw significant improvements each and every day, and we really believed we’d deliver in the final day zero update.

Q: Why was there a gap between PC and console reviews?

A:
We started sending out PC review keys to start the review process in the first week of December. Come December 10th, launch day, we had a really good start with PC reviews, and while it’s not perfect, this is a version of the game we were, and still are, very proud of. When it comes to the review process for consoles, at the same time PC codes were sent out we were still working hard to improve the quality of the game on old-gen consoles. Every extra day that we worked on the day zero update brought visible improvement — that’s why we started sending console codes for reviews on the 8th December, which was later than we had planned.

Q: What have you done since launch to make the game better?

A:
Our top priority since launch has been to fix bugs in Cyberpunk 2077. We have already released three hotfixes which have improved the game, but these are just the beginning.

Q: What are you going to do going forward to fix Cyberpunk 2077?

A:
We are focused on fixing the bugs and crashes players are experiencing across every platform. You can expect more in the way of patches — both small and large — to be released regularly. The first update will drop in the next 10 days, and it will be followed by a larger, more significant update, in the weeks after. Our plans for supporting Cyberpunk 2077 in the long-term are unchanged, and we will continue to introduce updates and patches to give all players across all consoles and PCs a better experience with the game.

Q: You have said there would be free DLC for the game in ‘early 2021’, will this be impacted by improvements?

A:
We’re still planning on releasing free DLC for the game, just like with The Witcher 3. However, we have decided that our priority is working on the most important fixes and updates. We will be releasing free DLC afterwards — we’ll have more to say about that in the coming months.

Q: When can we expect the next-gen update for Cyberpunk 2077?

A:
We are planning to release the free, next-gen update for Cyberpunk 2077 this year. We’re aiming for the second half of the year and we’ll reveal more when we have more to share.

Q: Are you making the team crunch to work on the patches?

A:
The team is working to bring relevant fixes to the game without any obligatory overtime. Avoiding crunch on all of our future projects is one of our top priorities.

Q: When is the game coming back to PlayStation Store?

A:
We are working on fixes and updates, and are working with Sony to bring Cyberpunk 2077 back to PlayStation Store as soon as possible.

Q: What is the status of the Help Me Refund initiative?

A:
The initiative is progressing according to plan and we just sent out the first wave of reimbursements.

Good morning / Dzien dobry,

I just wanted to say that I'm playing Cyberpunk 2077 on Xbox Series X and I've experienced little to no bugs at the very minimum. There have been some occasional crashes, but since the new updates some things have gotten better, but I noticed other little things that have been happening as well.

For example, some of the cars spawning in certain areas have been crashing into rails/going through objects.
Also when getting out of the vehicles the player aim sometimes gets stuck and one must click the aim button to fix it to get out of that sight. For one of the quests a dead NPC character was appearing outside of the wall near the dumpster and should have been inside the freezer in the building.

Despite the flaws and problems gamers are facing, I wanted to thank CD Projekt Red for making this game and for continuing to work on it. Hopefully the updates will make it near perfect (no game is perfect) because even though its not perfect its still playable (for me that is).

I look forward to playing many more hours of this game and am looking forward to the upcoming DLC once its released. Dzienki!

Sincerely,

Patrick C.

I am convinced that this has already been written;
first, CDPR corrects its game 100%, then can come the DLCS. many people ask for 3rd person play, others more weapons, character customization during gameplay...
I am in favor of a perfect correction then projects to come.
to date, the task is tough. those bugs, crashes, it is time as CP-2077 becomes a clean game worthy of the name.

=> I support the CDPR team.

If they sell the game on that "ancient tech" at full price, then: yes, it is realistic to expect it to work.

They are promising more fixes. That's good. They also promised a fully functioning game before release so maybe their promises are not worth that much, after all? Just a thought.

If you think this game fully lived up to your expectations, that only tells us you really need to have higher expectations. If you ever buy a game where shooting water will make splashes it will blow your mind!
That's quite rude...

Makes me wonder if you play other games that did met your expectations?

=> I support the CDPR team.

Oh, I support them too. I just don't appreciate being lied to in order to get me to buy their game.
The problem they have though is... even if they manage to fix all the bugs and performance issues on base XB1, I'm actually still not getting the game I thought I was buying because of all the cut content. Unless that returns too, I'll still feel lied to and manipulated.

It's such a shame CP'77 was my first experience of a CDPR game, but whether or not I buy any of their other games, or even the "pay for" DLCs for CP'77, depends on what CP'77 looks and plays like after the fixes and free DLCs - which I hope will be them putting back the cut content. [...]

I know that question wasn't pointed at me but... that would be any game that wouldn't so blatantly lie about how it functions in order to conceal its outrageous shallowness. I'm not talking about the marketing lies of CDPR prior and post release. I'm talking about the multitude of examples ranging from the big ones like "you will pierce armor with tech weapons" when enemies have no armor in this game to the lesser ones like "enemies won't detect you underwater" when there is exactly one enemy in one gig where this is relevant.

One good thing about CP77 is that it lowered people's expectations like no game ever before.

Never heard of those before, do you have a source?

I have done some research and found pretty much no lies at all so far, but I'm still looking and always keep my mind open.

Mostly it's being journalists twisting devs words to make their article get more views.

I understand that game has some bugs but that's quite normal especially in such complex games.

Can you explain at which point CDPR lied to you?

This comes across as completely disingenuous and it's tiresome. CDPR sold a broken game on 2 of the targeted platforms and deliberately did not show or allow media footage from those base platforms before launch. I don't know, nor care, how you did "some research" nor do I want to do it for you... I suggest something as simple as google if you truly are looking for answers.

So I take it no more patches? Thats it? Next game then!!!

A HUGE patch is not the right way anyway. Release smaller patches every 1-2 weeks and maybe what needs to be fixed has been fixed for people and they can continue playing. This strategy here is a disaster....

Can you explain at which point CDPR lied to you?

Man, seriously?.. Just check their 2018 trailer and compare it with a final game.

As for me, I'm not exactly angry on "lies", because I didn't inspect trailers etc. much before the release, but, still the disappointment was huge. Even without any comparisons with their trailers, the game provides unacceptable low level core mechanics, which is obvious for everyone who played some video games before. This city behavior, AI, driving, UI, crafting, character building system, they are impossible to ignore.
