Do you think Phantom Liberty will be worth the price? Reasons?

Given the continued performance issues of CB2077, and to a lesser extent my experiences here on this forum, I've gone from a 'Shut up and take my money' stance on the upcoming DLC, to an 'I'll wait for an 80% discount down the road' stance.

Though, I do appreciate the time and effort that went into the story and visuals overall (NOT RT/PT) and the fact that CDPR has remained true to their DRM free policy. Which is why I'm not abandoning the game completely.

For me personally, yes.

I'm buying it the moment it becomes available, which is something I never do, because I want more of Cherami Leigh's Valerie and Keanu Reeves' Johnny, since I extremely loved the entire experience which left me craving for so much more. So I'm buying it strictly because of them, everything else will be a pleasant bonus. And despite some minor bugs and yankiness here and there, it was overall an incredibly solid and consistent piece of art.

And I'm sure the current issues that these tech patches introduced will be fixed eventually. They seem to be focusing fully on the content update and the expansion, so the list of bug fixes will probably be massive. They did the same for Witcher 3 expansions.

This is almost impossible to say without knowing more details. I can't recall how much Blood and Wine retailed for, but I am pretty sure it was $19.99 and at the time most AAA titles were selling for $59.99. I thought that expansion was legitimately worth the price of a stand alone AAA game because:

1. It was superior to the vast majority of stand alone AAA titles story wise.
2. It had more content than the vast majority of games released that were sold for 3x more.

So for me if Phantom Liberty is anything like that, then yes it will be worth whatever price they charge for it (within reason). I am expecting a rather large expansion given that it has been in production for an extremely long time and I expect the quality of it to be high given the investment they are making in it.

But obviously if they release an expansion with eight hours of mediocre content, disappointing features and it is a bug infested mess it likely won't be worth it at all.

If the price is $19.99 it will absolutely be worth the price. It it was $29.99 I would consider that a bit insulting and wait for a minimum 25% discount. I’m not sure if I’ll be ordering it right out the gate (considering Cyberpunk’s launch day, regardless of lessons learned by CDPR I am not an idiot). More likely I’ll wait one or even two weeks prior to purchase and listen attentively to the buzz.

That seems to be a bad idea, purchasing on launch. It’s handwaving the lesson everyone (both CDPR and customers) should have learned from Cyberpunks distasteful launch. Do not reward them for such a large betrayal. The idea of never preordering from this company for at least the next few launches should have been underlined in blood.

A bad idea ?
Depend... I pre-order the game at launch, played it at launch on almost the "worst" platform possible (Xbox One X), but luckily for me, despite of what others experienced and outside of regular crashes, I managed to complete entirely the game in two weeks without any big issue...
"desastrous launch" ? Not for me... Good ? No, sure but far from desastrous :D

In the same way I bought all Bethesda games at launch (even FO76) and I will buy Starfield at release too... despite that Bethesda games are famously buggy... because even with bugs, their games still worth it to play :)

So yeah, as soon as the expansion is available, I'll buy it no matter the price.

Is smoking another pack of cigs on the tube again a bad idea?

It depends.... sure, I cough out my lungs every morning and the smoke gets on everyone else whether they like it or not, but I've personally not coughed up any blood! No, I will not at least wait until I get back home to smoke that pack so that it doesn't affect others.

So yeah, as soon as I can get my hands on a pack, that bad boy is gone, no matter the price.

It depends....
It depend of personal experience and what you consider worth it or not...
I guess someone who encountered serious game breaking issues at release and who need a "smooth bug free" experience to have fun, sure it's maybe not the best idea to buy the expansion at release.
But for me, it was great at release, bugs generally don't bother me and I wait to live more adventures in Night City since more than two years... So hell no, nor the price nor the "possible issues will prevent me from buying the expansion at release (in the same way that I'll buy Starfield at release despite of my last experience with FO76^^)

@LeKill3rFou Of course, I'm not trying to suggest you shouldn't buy the games that you want to buy or even that you shouldn't pay full price for them.

I am specifically talking about your comment regarding pre-ordering as soon as they're available - at that point it's no longer just about you and you own personal preferences. This only encourages such practices from the publisher, further enabling them to release their games in an unfinished state because it will still be worth it to them, which in turn impacts others.

I'll have to wait and see if the DLC will have more than just another circle jerk of a story that focuses on a Hollywood celebrity. Just like the base game, I probably won't care about the story. But if they add more to the combat (the best part of the game) or add more things to do in night city then I'll probably pick it up day 1. Otherwise I'll wait for a sell.

I won't purchase on launch. Personal principle. Going to wait how the general reception is, and based on that, will either buy or wait for a sale.

Yeah indeed, but as I see it, pre-ordering is (for me) to show studios my support to their products (I don't care about any "bonus" content^^). I (very) rarely pre-order games (Cyberpunk is the last one in date), I prefer "early access" or "game preview" which is way better if you ask me.
It's a kind of "investment" with indeed, risks. But it's something that everyone is free to do or not.

To take my "Bethesda" example, I pre-ordered FO76 and well I guess we all know how it turned out... So I'll buy Starfield at release, but there is no way I will pre-order it :)

I think that's a reasonable approach, it seems there was a misunderstanding then on my part - I thought you meant to say that you'd be pre-ordering no matter what. However, I see now that buying at launch and pre-ordering got conflated in the conversation, but the two are obviously not the same.

On Early Access, as always it really depends on the studio, but if done right it can actually benefit a game. Iterative development based on user feedback can most definitely produce a better product at the end of the process, and it's certainly more honest than releasing an unfinished game anyway without putting an Early Access label on it.

Getting back to the expansion, the base game didn't personally leave me with a great desire for more of the same, so I will wait and see what the expansion is all about before I decide if and when I will buy it or not. I hope CDPR knocks it out of the park though - in my opinion, they're the best AAA RPG studio in the industry when they get things right.

I think it will be worth the price. It's been in production for awhile, so hopefully there's a lot of content and story to experience and it takes us all on a ride.

Interesting to see that directed at me considering that;
  • I did not buy the game at launch, but I did try it out at the time for a few hours and decided to wait a year or two in order to experience it properly
  • In April 2022 I bought it to check its state, but refunded it soon after because I wasn't sure whether they still decided to just patch it or commit to it
  • Until I eventually fully bought it in September 2022 when I saw that they're actually fully committed to supporting it. So it was finally time for me to experience it and give my support to make it even better :D
It's important to realize that we can't speak for anyone other than ourselves, because not everyone is buying something for the same reason as the rest. I personally never regretted a single game purchase in my life because I do my homework and as a customer know what I want and exactly when I want it. There are smart buyers who wisely spend their money and do their research, while there are buyers who don't that then get burned/betrayed.

Even when I do once in a blue moon buy a game pre-launch, such as my latest purchase of Baldur's Gate 3 which is currently in Early Access. I got 400 hours of enjoyment in its Early Access so far, at least a dozen playthroughs and I've been participating heavily in providing feedback and reporting any bugs each update... because I knew what I wanted, I really love the experience it offers and want the product to be even better. So is it a bad idea to buy something that I am truly enjoying and really want? Not to me. And apparently not to 55000 people who bought it.

In Cyberpunk's case, I did not buy it at launch despite being extremely fascinated by it and dying to experience it because something felt off about it due to all the news pre-launch. I did get to play it for a few hours at launch and I was disappointed to see the state it was in because the foundations and core of the game were phenomenally impressive and incredibly unique in a sea of copy-paste AAA junk that comes out regularly. It was oozing with so much overwhelming talent and passion around every corner, but unfortunately it was rushed, unfinished and messy and not how I wished to experience it back then.

I collected all the issues I came across for the 3 hours that I tried it, reported them right here on the forum and waited to see if they'll abandon it or dedicate themselves to improving it and making it what it deserved to be. Ultimately bought the game in September 2022 when I saw they're dedicated to it and been playing religiously ever since. Finished it fully two months ago after a 550h playthrough and became one of my most favorite games of all time.

I cherished every single second of my playtime, had one of the most amazing times ever in a game and I'm dying to get more content now. Especially for more of Cherami Leigh and Keanu Reeves, whose characters are so wonderfully brought to life and to me personally a vast reason why I love the game so much. One of the most uniquely compelling performances I've ever witnessed in gaming that made me an avid admirer of her work.

And truth be told I actually ended up regretting buying it at a discount, due to everything it gave me. So will I be rewarding the bad launch? No.

I will be rewarding the 550 hours of pure bliss that Cyberpunk 2077 gave me and all the wonderful talent and passion that went into creating this beautifully unique work of art that captivated my heart and soul for months as I was playing through it. And I hope that by doing so I will get to see Cherami Leigh's beautifully unique performance once again in the future. Everything else regarding the expansion will just be a sweet bonus for me that will add even more hours into a game I already love and cherish so much.
  • So is it a bad idea to buy an expansion for a game I really love and cherish playing? Absolutely not to me, I'm getting precisely what I want.
  • Is it a bad idea for anyone else to buy it? Only if there's a chance they might regret it or don't trust CDPR, but that's none of my business.

Gamers refusing to learn the lessons we’re taught: “I’ll never purchase another game from CDPR / BioWare / Bethesda / EA *ever again*! “
Publisher: New game coming out.
Gamers: Take my money!
I’ve got over 1,000 hours in the game, 330 alone in just my current Playthrough (not even counting reloads). I’m still not going to ignore the feeling of being scammed I got on launch. This was reason enough for me to sign up to the mantra that we *I* do not preorder.

You do you. My husband bought it at launch, played a bit, had some funny glitches involving his character's dick clipping through his pants, then completely disappearing. He stopped playing, last year I was in need of a new RPG and decided to get it on Steam when it was half off, and now it's my current brainrot. The game has come a long way. The launch was a shit show. CDPR learned from it, and have been since trying to make it up to the players. Credit where credit is due.

"DO YOU THINK PHANTOM LIBERTY WILL BE WORTH THE PRICE? REASONS?"

Absolutely.
New content? New storyline? New vehicle(s)? Expansion? Whole new neighborhood? Reasons enough. I am expecting a lot.
Reserved €60.00 just for the expansion on the bank account with the REDS' name on it.

Will buy, download, install and play straight away the moment I am able.

I`ll buy it ASAP. I have big faith in CDPR developers and even if it will need patch or two, I`m sure it will be great experience. I`m also curious if and what they`ve learned from base game in terms of approach to quests and basically whole design. Its slightly different when you release a game and have over a year to think about it and what can you do better.

But... nobody is even trying to convince you or anyone else here otherwise, I even said so myself that people who think they might regret it shouldn't buy it immediately. So there's no need to debate people's decisions regarding the expansion nor make such statements implying that me or anyone else here are "hurr durr dumb gamers repeating poor decisions and regretting them later" for wanting to buy an expansion for a game we really enjoy playing and want more content for :D

I simply expressed to the OP why the expansion will be worth it to me at any price at any time. Despite tremendously loving and cherishing the game, I'm also fully aware of its flaws and the terrible state it was in at launch... yet I'm buying the expansion as soon as it's available no matter the price because I tremendously enjoy CP2077 and want more of Cherami Leigh. Simple as that. To me that's all the reason why I personally want it, which is why I have no issue buying it immediately.

My real gaming caution, standards and expectations are set for the sequel, the same way as they were at launch. It's a new game after all, new engine. I'm qute afraid of it to be honest for a lot of reasons. But for an expansion in a game I really enjoy and want more content for? Hell no, that's an instant buy for me :D
